- Bullying is defined as treating others abusively and affecting another by means of forces or coercion. Children are now finding creative ways to intimidate their victims. Many bullies start their taunting by spreading rumors and lies about their victims. It’s the continuous taunting that leads to more severe bullying and often creates long-term psychological issues.
- Children have come up with more creative ways of bullying students and have more accessibility than in the past. Social media has allowed school yard bullying to be a 24/7 taunting session that allows the rumors and name calling to spread more rapidly. Since kids don’t always tell their parents or other adults when they are being bullied on social networks, it is important for parents to be watching for signs of bullying. Children who have cell phones may also have access to receiving and sending text messages. Texting allows bullies the ability to send insulting messages and even threats of harm to their victims.
- Victims are often singled out due to some physical trait or psychological trait that a bully feels he or she can use against the victim to taunt them. Children who are shy, sensitive, insecure, or has low self-esteem usually fall victim to bullying. Some physical traits that often lead to bullying are race, being overweight, or being smaller than others
- Research as shown that students who use productive coping strategies have a greater sense of wellbeing and those who use nonproductive strategies are likely to feel less comfortable about themselves and their circumstances (Frydenberg, 2005). Further research states that bystanders, many young people reported conflicting feelings, including guilt, anger, confusion, lack of knowledge regarding what to do, and fear of becoming the next victim (Frydenberg, 2005). Schools may have standard procedures in place to combat bullying, however following the protocol and procedures needs to enforced. Parents also need to take a more proactive role in ensuring their child’s safety by addressing the school administrators when their children are being bullied. Although there are anti-bullying laws in place schools need to be held more accountable when there are incidents of bullying that goes unaddressed. Anti-bullying laws, such as the federal initiative called Stop Bullying Now at the Department of Health and Human Services, are useless since they only deal with physical assaults in school and are rarely enforced (Cary, 2010).

More education and awareness may also be a good leeway into enforcing school anti-bullying policies.
