[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],What is the Plan Do Check Act (PDCA) Method? Plan Do Check Act
Standards, Process Improvement and the PDCA Method The Current Standard serves as “ The Chock” to PREVENT BACKSLIDING ” “ CHAOS” WILL TAKE OVER > STANDARDS WILL BACKSLIDE If we DON’T continuously improve we will experience a NATURALLY occurring Re-action! CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT Plan Do Check Act A PROCESS
What are the steps of PDCA? Plan Do Check Act
Plan ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],Plan = Identify, Define, Measure, create a baseline, set a goal/target Create a “test/trial” and corrective actions to improve the problem using a Scientific Method to obtain a different result Plan Do Check Act
[object Object],Do ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],Do = Implement the Plan Perform the Test/Trial you created Monitor the change during implementation Plan Do Check Act
[object Object],Check ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],Check = Reflect and compare baseline data to new data obtained from test Determine if an improvement occurred Plan Do Check Act
[object Object],Act ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],Act = If No improvement occurred Go Back to Plan If a change for the better occurred then Stabilize and Standardize the new method, teach others of new method and start the PDCA cycle again. 1. INTRO SLIDE We will discuss the Origin of Plan Do Check Act We will discuss WHAT is the Plan Do Check Act method We will discuss Standards and how you should think about improvement of current standards We will discuss each step of Plan Do Check Act so you can gain more understanding of this method if it is new to you
  2. 2 Min Key Takeaway: There were individuals who created the PDCA Method for a reason, i.e. continuous improvement through applying a scientific method dating back to 1620 Discuss the origin of PDCA Start with Sir Francis Bacon, then Shewhart, then Deming Comment on Deming being the individual who made PDCA popular in the world of continuous improvement Note: 2 Learning objectives are in this slide Name 3 people who played a role in the origin of PDCA Sir Francis Bacon 1620 Walter Shewhart 1924 Edwards Deming 1924 Name a Leader of Quality who supported and promoted PDCA scientific process Edwards Deming 1924
  3. 2 Min Key Takeaway: Offers to the student and overview of KEY POINTS of WHAT PDCA method is about. Stress BOLDED words during slide discussion
  4. 5 min Key Takeaway Maintaining and sustaining the standard takes time and energy, but if you DON’T continuously improve you WILL BACKSLIDE Slide is Animated. Order of Animations Order of animations and suggested elements of discussion Incline plane Demonstrates progress and since it is inclined demonstrates difficulty in sustaining improvements 2. Current Standard serves as “The Chock” to PREVENT BACKSLIDING with arrow and Choke comes in ACTION: MUST CLICK TO ADVANCE Discuss the CURRENT STANDARD and chock > use this example to illustrate the Concept and Thinking: Demonstrates the need for a standard “The Chock” You have a lawn. You have a standard height at which you would like to keep the lawn cut to The grass grows past the standard height You mow the grass to correct the non-standard height. If you let the grass grow too long you will invite snakes, new insects, new varmints, unwanted and undesirables 3. The circle “A Process” ACTION: MUST CLICK TO ADVANCE Demonstrates where the standard is applied, i.e. to a Process or a step in a process 4. The PDCA Circle and Continuous Improvement Arrow Answers Learning Objective: WHERE ACTION: MUST CLICK TO ADVANCE Discuss WHERE PDCA Method is applied; “To all Processes and/or Process Steps” 5. Constant Consistent & Continuous Change for the Better (KAIZEN BURST) Answers Learning Objective: WHEN ACTION: MUST CLICK TO ADVANCE Demonstrates that we should always looking for a better way ALL OF THE TIME Constantly Challenge the CURRENT STANDARD 6. Arrow + statement + dashed line and CHAOS statement > BACKLSLIDING ACTION: MUST CLICK TO ADVANCE Makes the point that there are natural forces that will cause the current and even the new standard to BACKSLIDE Note: A Learning objective is in the discussion offered by the instructor Describe WHERE and WHEN you should apply PDCA Method 4. The PDCA Circle and Continuous Improvement Arrow Answers Learning Objective: WHERE Discuss WHERE PDCA Method is applied; “To all Processes and/or Process Steps” 5. Constant Consistent & Continuous Change for the Better (KAIZEN BURST) Answers Learning Objective: WHEN Demonstrates that we should always looking for a better way ALL OF THE TIME, Constantly Challenge the CURRENT STANDARD
  5. Transition slide 5 seconds Instructor indicates that we will now review each element of PDCA
  6. 2 min Key Takeaways: The majority of people naturally think about problem solving in this way, they just don’t call it PDCA thinking / problem solving. Make the Point that “You all ready think this way!” “ When faced with a problem, we naturally begin to ask questions to identify and define the problem, and then we create corrective actions to improve the problem.” PLAN = Identify, Define, Measure, create a baseline, set a goal/ target Create a “test” and corrective actions to improve the problem using a Scientific Method to obtain a different result Instructor should discuss the numerous QUESTIONS that WILL occur in the mind of the person presented with a problem Again use terms of scientific Method, BASELINE data would be of great importance to the individual applying PDCA as a measurement of change during the DO section of PDCA Note: Part of Learning objective is in this slide Describe each element of the acronym PDCA PLAN = Identify, Define, Measure, create a baseline, set a goal/target Create a “test” and corrective actions to improve the problem using a Scientific Method to obtain a different result
  7. 2 min Key Takeaways: DO is when the Scientist's) move to action and tests their theory to improve the problem Instructor should place emphasis that the person(s) involved in DO should be present and ready to measure when the actions of improvement are implemented. Must be at the scene of the improvement. Note: Part of Learning objective is in this slide Describe each element of the acronym PDCA DO = Implement the PLAN Perform the Test you created Monitor the change during implementation
  8. 2 min Key Takeaways: CHECK is when the SCIENTIST(s) take a moment and reflect on their experiment of improvement Use data to validate and verify if a change actually occurred Instructor should emphasis that the individual(s) should take the time to take a moment, reflect and LEARN from the activities they just performed. Key Step toward Learning and Further Improvement of process Note: Part of Learning objective is in this slide Describe each element of the acronym PDCA CHECK = Reflect and compare baseline data to new data obtained from test Determine if an improvement occurred
  9. 2 min Key Takeaways: In ACT the change for the better is formally implemented, applying proper management of change Share new standard where applicable Stabilize the improvement first, it will start a little out of control. The Stabilization portion is critical to Sustaining the improvement, you can’t just make the change and walk away! Now we need to implement the improvement. Communication of Change and Change Management is a critical step in the ACT element of PDCA. If you do not take the time to perform proper change management the likelihood of sustaining is greatly reduced Instructor should place emphasis on creating STANDARD documentation to support and guide the broader aspects of implementing a change. Instructor should place emphasis on Not Walking Away from the improvement even after the process has been stabilized Note: Part of Learning objective is in this slide Describe each element of the acronym PDCA ACT = If NO improvement occurred Go Back to PLAN If a change for the better occurred then Stabilize and Standardize the new method, teach others of new method and start the PDCA cycle again.
