Hi! I want to talk to you today about the new H1N1 virus. I want you to know what it is, how to protect yourself from getting it and how it is affecting the school system today. This powerpoint is by JoLynn Todd.
The H1N1 is a new flu virus in 2009 and it is also known as the Swine Flu. This flu is making people more sick than the typical flu virus and seems to be more contagious than it also. The seasonal flu affects everyone as well but, it is more common to affect the elderly, children, and the sick. The H1N1 seems to be affecting everyone including the middle aged healthy population which is why this virus is such a concern. There are many ways to keep yourself healthy and some of them are very simple and easy for everyone to follow. I will discuss these more in detail in a little bit. It is very important to know how to take care of somebody that has the flu. There may be specific precautions that you must take to better take care of them.
H1N1 is a flu virus that is making many people very ill. This flu is spreading from human to human in a similar manner that the regular flu spreads. It is spread by coughing, sneezing, or touching objects that are contaminated with the virus. Some of the signs and symptoms of the H1N1 virus according to the CDC could be: Fever, coughing, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Some people may also have nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Some people have even died from serious complications from this virus as well. Most people can recover without any medical treatment when they become ill with this virus. The new strain of the virus was discovered in April of 2009. According to the World Health Organization in June, they said that we need to prepare for a flu pandemic. Many people that are generally healthy are the ones that are typically becoming ill because they do not have any antibodies built up to fight off the virus.
The 2009 outbreak of the H1N1 virus is said that it is going to become a pandemic. This is not the first time in history that this virus has presented itself. The first pandemic of Swine flu actually happened in 1976. The pandemic started in soldiers and many of them were getting very sick and some of them even died. Scientists did not come up with a vaccine until 7.5 months after the first case was confirmed. The government recommended that everyone get the vaccine to protect themselves from getting the flu. It was during this time that the scientists realized that this flu was being spread by human to human contact.
Health officials are offering H1N1 vaccines that people can get to help them stay healthy with the oncoming flu season ahead. There are two different kinds of vaccines available. The vaccine that is in a shot form is a dead part of the virus, and the nasal mist vaccine is a weakened part of the live vaccine. There are some easy ways to avoid getting sick as well. Washing your hands with soap and water or using a antibacterial hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available are very important. Keep your hands away from your face; eyes, nose, and mouth. Stay away from sick people as much as possible. If you do get sick it is recommended that you stay home and away from people for at least 24 hours after your fever has gone away without the use of any fever reducing medications. If you do become ill with the virus, there are some antiviral medications that you can take that can help lessen the symptoms of the flu.
There are many people that are getting sick and so that makes it even more important to stay as healthy as possible. It is very easy to become sick with this virus, it is more contagious than the seasonal flu. The more people that get sick means that the more likely deaths will rise, especially within the healthy population. The most important thing to know is how to protect yourself and your family from the flu. It is very important to know the precautions to take in order to keep yourself healthy. It is also very important to stay away from other people to avoid getting them ill from you.
Unfortunately, this is having a big impact on our education system. Sometimes a child may be sent to school when they are sick. Usually, they have to go to school when a parent has to work or has other obligations and they have lack of daycare for their children. It is very unfortunate to see because there are many consequences in sending a child to school that is ill. When children are sick they have a difficult time staying on task and they get easily distracted with coughing, sneezing, and in general just don’t feel good at all. They typically don’t learn very well when they are sick. When they are at school they are a risk to other students and may easily get other children sick as well. They usually just want to be home and resting with someone to take care of them.
Every school has a different course of action that they need to follow that best fits the children at that particular school. It is recommended that children and staff are screened when they get to school every morning. This may take a lot of time in the morning but, it may be a necessary step to keep the school atmosphere as healthy as possible. Separating ill students and staff from the healthy ones may be a good choice as well until they are able to leave the school to go home. Staff at the school should work on cleaning better and more often. It is essential that objects and desks that children touch regularly are cleaned thoroughly.
H1N1 is a big disruption for schools right now. It is decreasing the ability to have all of the children together in one learning environment. Many schools are closing as a result from H1N1. Too many kids are out of school to even hold classes. Depending on how long schools are closed, students may fall behind in their academic progress. They may also have to make up the days in the summer months. We need to worry about the children now and keep them protected as best as we possibly can.
It is uncertain what may need to be done next to address this serious issue. The main objective right now is getting the people that are sick completely better. It is also essential to keep the people that are healthy to stay healthy. Getting treatment for sick people is a good idea and closing schools when necessary is beneficial to aid in the future learning process.
In conclusion, H1N1 is a very serious problem in our country today and worldwide. When available it may also be beneficial to wear a facemask or respirator for protection. The most important thing to remember is that we need to keep our families safe and healthy at all costs.
