      The General Open Quiz

Ze Prelims
 30 questions
 Questions 11-20 are starred and will be used
    to break ties
 8 teams in the finals
 This is a disorienting 1964 snap by Philippe Halsman,
featuring someone projecting pieces of dirty paper “to
    stimulate his inspiration.”

 Who?

 Image in the next slide.
 Uranus has 27 known moons.

 24 of these are named after characters from William
    Shakespeare’s works.

 The remaining three – Ariel (also a spirit in The Tempest),
Umbriel and Belinda are named after characters from which
    1712 mock-heroic narrative poem?
Scene from a 1969 Broadway
musical, which at that time was
the most expensive production
to ever grace the NYC stages.

       Who as whom?
 In 2010, it was discovered that male mouse urine contains a
specific pheromone that invokes inherent sexual attraction
by stimulating memory of the female mice thereby
conditioning them to the airborne odors of an individual
    scent owner.

 The protein itself was named after the archetypal cold and
seemingly arrogant romantic hero, the protagonist of a 1813
    novel.

 Name the protein/character.
 “In 1912, it had over 600 pages, 62 of which concerned tires. By
1927, however, the first section devoted to changing tires
included only 5 pages, out of 990 total.”

 Excerpt from a 2001 book by historian Stephen Harp.

 What were the remaining 985 pages about?
This ad has covered this railway station's western facade for
several decades. Just identify the city.
 Which is the only member of today's European Union ever to
have a U.N. peacekeeping mission sent there, in 1964?

 Also, who, after his retirement from the Army, went on to
command the United Nations peacekeeping force there? He
died, while on duty, in 1965 and had a commemorative
stamp issued in his memory in 1966 by this nation.
 Like some other reviewers I probably wouldn't recommend going
out of your way to visit this museum, but if you happen to be
passing by, it's worth the reasonable entry fee to spend 30
minutes or so in the bowels of Paris. I was worried about walking
on the open grating, but I got over it and found it quite
interesting. It will certainly be a talking point when we get home
and I am currently reading ‘Les Miserables’ although I haven't got
to the bit where they go down into the __________ yet. However,
it will be much easier to picture now that I have seen them.

 Visitor review on tripadvisor.com. FITB OR What is the museum
dedicated to? Image in the next 2 slides.
 It is a traditional gesture of greeting, in which a girl or
woman bends her knees while bowing her head. In more
formal variants, the girl/woman bends the knees outward
(rather than straight ahead), often sweeping one foot behind
her. She may also use her hands to hold her skirt out from
    her body.

 It is a shortening of another term that, once again, refers to
    polite behavior.

 What is the gesture called? Image in the next slide.
 What is the subject of this
    2012 novel featuring a very
    appropriate cover design?

 Additional image in the
    next slide.
 Dancing mania was a phenomenon that occurred primarily in
mainland Europe between the 14th-17th centuries. Thousands of
people danced hysterically, sometimes for weeks.

 One of the proposed etiologies for the same is envenomation
from the bite of a X. This is also believed to have lead to the
name and development of Y, one of the most famous and
recognized European dances. The Y is commonly accompanied
by a mandolin, a guitar, an accordion and tambourines. The
dancer and the instrumentalist constantly try to upstage each
other by dancing longer or playing faster than the other.

 Identify X and Y. Image of a Pieter Brueghel painting featuring
the phenomenon in the next slide.
 X is a small peninsula (within the larger Jutland peninsula) in
Southern Schleswig in the northern Schleswig-Holstein,
Germany, protruding into the Bay of Kiel. One of the
common theories behind the origin of the name X is that the
landform resembles the shape of a hook on the map. Natives
of X migrated to another region between the 4th and 6th
centuries. This new region, its people and their language all
came to be named after these migrants.

 Name X/the natives/new region/language.
 In 1990, a US physician named Frank Meshberger noted that the background
figures and shapes in X appeared to be an anatomically accurate picture of
    the human brain.

 The borders correlate with major sulci of the cerebrum in the inner and outer
surface of the brain, the brain stem, the frontal lobe, the basilar artery, the
pituitary gland and the optic chiasm. There appears to be communication
present, just as neurons transmit biochemical information across synaptic
clefts. One of the major characters is superimposed over the limbic system,
the emotional center of the brain and possibly the anatomical counterpart of
the human soul. The active part of this character extends to the prefrontal
cortex, the most creative and most uniquely human region of the brain.

 Just identify X.
 Featured is the opening lines from the song ‘Carbonised’ by the
Singapore Black Metal band Impiety from their 2004 album
    Paramount Evil.

 Open wide the gates of Eden,
Trains of the flock have arrived,
Herded into rows forced to march,
Welcome to the Kingdom of the Accursed.
Stripped of all clothes and disgraced,
Angel of Death gives the command,
Those who shall work and will die
    Those biologically blessed!

 What are a.) Eden and b.) Angel of Death symbolic of? What sub-
genre of black metal was the band accused of supporting because
    of this song?
 This 1933 national bestseller by F. J. Schlink and Arthur Kallet
spearheaded the growth of the consumer protection
movement in USA ultimately leading to the passage (in 1938)
of the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. The authors alleged that
many of the best-known U.S. consumer products of the day
were either useless or actually dangerous, released with little
regard or knowledge of their adverse impact.

 The book was also significant in that its title popularized a
metaphor and extended its use to include the consumer
    society.

 Name the book/metaphor.
 In 2000, English entertainment personality Colin Matthews
was commissioned by the Halle orchestra in Manchester to
take advantage of the scientific progress of the last century
to add an eighth installment to a project that dates back to
    1916.

 The timing, however, was lousy, 70 years late, and the object
of Matthews’ work itself was discarded six years later.

 What are we talking about?
 Previous attempts at branding the city like “Capital of Sports”
and “Small City, Big Business” were either too vague or focused
on just one aspect of the city to the detriment of others.

 So, a new attempt was made in 2004, which went on to strike
gold. The colors of the slogan were drawn from the flag and coat
of arms, which depicts three white St. Andrew’s Crosses on a
black stripe over a field of red. There are 3 two-meter tall red and
white sets of letters that spell out the slogan/brand, one outside
the city museum, one at the airport and a third set letters that
travel around the city, appearing at major cultural events.

 Identify the slogan. Image in the next slide.
 Michael ‘Mad’ Anthony, the former bassist for Van Halen, is
famous for his custom-made bass guitars.

 As a connoisseur of X, Anthony built a bass guitar in the shape of a
X at the urging of friends. It debuted in the video of Van Halen hit
"Panama" . It was later donated to Hard Rock Cafe, but was such a
hit that Michael built a higher quality version with assistance from
the X company in exchange for Mike's entry into their HoF.

 Identify X, which surprisingly is not available at stores or
restaurants in Moore County, Tennessee, its home, due to strict
    laws.
 He is supposedly the only architect after whom a road is named in
Delhi. His most prominent constructions include:

        - The headquarters of the Ford Foundation, UNICEF, the WWF,
the India International Center etc., all in Lodhi Estate
(where this QM had his education)
        - The American International School and the Australian high
          commission in Chanakyapuri
        - The steel domes and concrete columns of Pragati Maidan

 He also notably re-landscaped the Lodhi Gardens.

 Identify this American modernist architect, who took the Mughal art
of garden monuments to city buildings. Which project in Kerala do
    we remember him for?
 Members of X used questions like “Does a Mr. Ayak live in this
neighborhood?” in conversation to identify themselves or
    enquire about another potential member.

 Responses to this question by similar members used to be
something along the lines of “Yes, a Mr. Akia does.”

 What are Ayak and Akia? OR Identify X.
 Still from a 1992 movie
    named (and based on the
    life of) X, featuring X’s
    daughter playing the role
    of his mom.

 Identify X.
 Title X is derived from an Arabic root word meaning “to
command”. Originally simply meaning commander or leader, it
has come to be used as a title for governors or rulers, usually in
small Arabic states. The Western naval rank of "admiral" also
comes from the Arabic naval title X al-bahr.

 Identify title X, which is also referenced in the name of a
    modern day Arab country.

 Also, whom did Tom Clancy refer to by this title in his books
The Teeth of the Tiger, Dead or Alive, Locked On etc.?
 When the first cars rolled on to the Indian soil , only one
company made a particular component for them. This
company itself was named after a street in Llanelli, Wales
where it was located. The name is today used as
    generalization of the product involved.

 Which company?
 “If SIT Chief Karthikeyan had given us the permission to storm the
house, we would have done it on 18th night itself. He was selfish,
may be he wanted to be there when the actual operations took
place. If he had permitted, then two things might have happened,
either Sivarasan would have killed me or I would have killed him,
because of the six member commando group I would have been
the first to enter the house.”

 Speaking is leader of the failed mission codenamed Operation
One-eyed Jack on 18 Aug 1991 to flush out the terrorists
involved in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case from their base
    in Bangalore.

 Who?
 Pictured is the seal of the
    Philippine National Police.

 Who, regarded, as the first
    Filipino hero is featured on
    the seal?

              OR

 What is he remembered for?
 A X on June 3, 2008, by Barack Obama and his wife Michelle
Obama during a televised presidential campaign speech in
St. Paul, Minnesota, was publicized as “The X heard 'round
    the world”.

 The X was also suggested as a “nice replacement of the
handshake” in an effort to prevent transmission of the H1N1
    virus during the 2009 pandemic.

 What is X, something attributed to legendary baseball player
Stan Musial/DC Comics superheroes Wonder Twins?
 This Disney character is used in various avatars as a symbol
by Brazilian soccer fan associations, in order to feature their
team colors. For example, Palmeiras has one named
“Mancha Alviverde”, Cruzeiro, CSA and Avai have the
“Mancha Azul” and Vasco da Gama has “Mancha Negra”. The
character made his debut in a 1939 narrative based on the
Sherlock Holmes story The Adventure of the Six Napoleons.
The character’s gaunt face and thin moustaches, when
unmasked, were reportedly based on the features of Walt
    Disney himself.

 Identify.
 The Indian representative at the 1893 World Parliament of
Religions in Chicago was Swami Vivekananda who impressed
everyone world over with his speech.

 The Indian attendee at the 1993 edition gave a speech as
well, and was elected a committee member in the assembly
    of Global Religions.

 Who?
 He had a surname which, in
his own words, is a Dutch
    word meaning ‘Land of
    Beacons’. His 1907
    invention, borne out of the
    pursuit for a replacement for
    a substance made from the
    excreta of lac beetles, is
    referred to as “the material
    of 1000 uses”.

 Name him/the invention.
1. Never carry illegal goods/contraband ever again.
2. Never carry bamboo ever again.
3. Never carry a female who works for a Nautanki company.

 How do we better know the third item in this list?

  • 19. Like some other reviewers I probably wouldn't recommend going out of your way to visit this museum, but if you happen to be passing by, it's worth the reasonable entry fee to spend 30 minutes or so in the bowels of Paris. I was worried about walking on the open grating, but I got over it and found it quite interesting. It will certainly be a talking point when we get home and I am currently reading ‘Les Miserables’ although I haven't got to the bit where they go down into the __________ yet. However, it will be much easier to picture now that I have seen them.  Visitor review on tripadvisor.com. FITB OR What is the museum dedicated to? Image in the next 2 slides.

Thousands of people danced hysterically, sometimes for weeks.  One of the proposed etiologies for the same is envenomation from the bite of a X. This is also believed to have lead to the name and development of Y, one of the most famous and recognized European dances. The dancer and the instrumentalist constantly try to upstage each other by dancing longer or playing faster than the other.  Identify X and Y. In 1990, a US physician named Frank Meshberger noted that the background figures and shapes in X appeared to be an anatomically accurate picture of the human brain.  The borders correlate with major sulci of the cerebrum in the inner and outer surface of the brain, the brain stem, the frontal lobe, the basilar artery, the pituitary gland and the optic chiasm. There appears to be communication present, just as neurons transmit biochemical information across synaptic clefts. One of the major characters is superimposed over the limbic system, the emotional center of the brain and possibly the anatomical counterpart of the human soul. The active part of this character extends to the prefrontal cortex, the most creative and most uniquely human region of the brain.  Just identify X.

The colors of the slogan were drawn from the flag and coat of arms, which depicts three white St. Andrew’s Crosses on a black stripe over a field of red.
