2. Content
• The content of the music video include the
main artist from the Foals finding a dead
animal and travelling miles to sacrifice it and
hoping to ‘burn’ away the memories. This type
of narrative will be useful for both male and
female audiences as the narrative is very
general; both males and females can relate to
the song.
3. Style and length of editing
This opening image is a fade-in
medium shot of mountains covered in
snow. This could have been used so
the image clearly and slowly forms in
the audience mind; this creates a
peaceful atmosphere.
4. Mise en scene
This mise en scene of the main character in the black coat which could be
used at warmth; black soaks in sunlight. This could be used as a sense of
identity as black coats don’t usually have a label attached or associate with a
certain social group; this therefore widens audience. The mise en scene of
the man dragging a dead animal in a plastic bag leaves the audience with
many questions unanswered. This can help me in the planning of my music
video as I can use mise en scene to build a story to the audience.
5. Locations
This mountain location isn’t a location that the
audience will aspire to. This would make this
artist ordinary as the audience will be familiar
with this location and not aspire to it. This
goes with Dyer’s Star theory about the
paradoxes. The star is simultaneously ordinary
and extra ordinary. This will help me in the
making of my music video as I will include at
least one of these paradoxes that will cause
the audience to feel like they can relate to the
artist due to their location.
6. Camera shots/ angles
The low angle-head shot followed up by a close up, reflects status as if he was looking
up at the man, showing how the video is about him. Goodwin states that “the
demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups.” This video
provides close ups for the audience to recognize the artist more. This can also be used
to show the artists emotion to emphasize the lyrics in the music video. This will help
me in the planning of my music video because I will know to include close ups and mid
shots to show what the artist is about.
7. Characters
The only character in this music
video is the artist. Having only the
artists in the music video is useful as
there will be no distractions and the
audience will notice them more. So it
will be useful for me to include the
artists alone because being new
artists, they need the full attention.
8. Colour and lighting
Soft colours are used with natural
lighting. This is useful because the artist
can gain sympathy from the situation.
This can be useful in the planning of my
music video because I can use soft or
harsh colours to present a certain
mood for the audience.
