Presentation I gave at the Geospatial World Forum summarizing how GeoEye is combining Earth imagery, geospatial expertise, and enabling technology to help organization manage world resources. I focused on three key use cases of disaster recovery, resource protection, and sustainable energy

Lords Resistance ArmyThe LRA kidnaps children from their homes and forces them to join the LRA but first they must murder their family members as a way of letting go of the past to promise their loyalty to the LRA. These children typically range between 11-15 years old. The men are turned into soldiers, the women are sex slaves for the group and when they act out or try to leave they are punished by severe face and body mutilation.
Background - GeoEye Analytics was hired 2 years ago by the Office of Naval Research to assist in their efforts to track the LRA’s activity. And recently the GeoEye Foundation was approached by 2 non-profit organizations, Invisible Children and The Resolve to assist in providing data and analysis. We can’t go into detail on either of projects due to sensitivity, but the GeoEye Foundation is supporting the efforts with the non-profits with the help of our eyeQ, GeoEye Analytics and Customer Support teams.
The methodology that we employ is that we aggregate both event data and the factor data that has both human and physical geography characteristics. We then have a combination of expertise, tools, and tradecraft that allows us to fuse multi-source data and then run analytical algorithms against that to eventually result in a form of geospatial insight that takes former events and then identifies, based on this analysis, where future events may occur.
What EyeQ enables is we can take our high resolution imagery, which we use to create precise imagery products for a very broad area, and allow someone to really select the specific area they need and then download that. So it obviously changes the paradigm, where an 8 gigabyte full image, which we might distribute, and I only need 20 MB out of it that’s pertinent. We can deliver that with all the full resolution imagery, the associated metadata etc, for consumption and processing.
