Biogeochemical Cycles In this section, we examine three material cycles of nature: cycles of water, carbon, and nitrogen--substances central to maintaining life on Earth. The three material cycles consist of the transfer of chemicals from biological systems to geological systems and are therefore called biogeochemical cycles. Processes that affect these transfers are biological processes such as respiration, transpiration, photosynthesis, and decomposition, as well as geological processes such as weathering, soil formation, and sedimentation. As materials cycle through, we note that the total quantity (mass) of matter remains the same, and energy that is put in changes to work (often to rearrange forms of matter) and is eventually lost to the surroundings.

Abstract #: 4983 - European Association of Archaeologists 2018 BARCELONA (SPAIN) RECONSTRUCTION AND IMPACT OF SEASCAPE EVOLUTION ON HUMAN COMMUNITIES DURING THE MESOLITHIC-NEOLITHIC TRANSITION IN THE MEDITERRANEAN IBERIA Dr. Elodie Brisset, Dr Javier Fernández-López de Pablo, Dr Francesc Burjachs Institut Català de Paleoecologia Humana i Evolució Social (Spain) Corresponding author's e-mail: elodie.brisset@imbe.fr The study of past interactions between hunter-gatherer communities and coastal environment is of major interest because this period was characterised by a rapid sealevel rise following the Deglaciation. Here we present a study case of Pego-Oliva (Eastern Spain), an area which provides a thick Early-middle Holocene sedimentary infill, together with an extended Mesolithic sequence (El Collado site). Both records provide an unique opportunity to address how the Early Holocene sea level the reduction of coastal plains and the modification of coastal biotopes affected human settlement patterns during the Mesolithic period and the Mesolithic-Neolithic trantition. New fieldwork in the Pego-Oliva lagoon has been carried out in the context of the research project MedCoRes (H2020-MSCA-IF-2015 Ref. 704822). An extensive sampling strategy, based on 3 transects of 16 boreholes covering the Holocene sedimentary infilling, has been implementd together with sedimentological (lithostratigraphy, grainsize, LOI, dry density), and chronostratigraphic analyses (14C dates). This work has allowed to reconstruct three main phases of the morphogenetic evolution: First, from 9800 to 8200 cal. BP, the retrogradational architecture is characterised by four steps of shallow inner lagoon environments associated to sand barriers. Then, from 8200 to 7000 cal. BP, the continuous and rapid backward migration of the shoreline reached its maximal inland position leading to the disappearance of former inner lagoons. Finally, since 7000 cal. BP, sea-level stabilisation promoted the barrier construction leading to formation of an inner coastal lagoon isolated of the sea. Finally, based on paleogeographical reconstructions and radiocarbon modelling we estimated that horizontal inland migration of the coastline reached rates of ~150 m per 50 years. Those results are compared to the Bayesian chronostratigraphy and bioarchaeological assemblages of El Collado. Altogether, our results show synchronic changes of coastal palaeoenvironments and subsistence patterns, arguing that new strategies have been essential to adapt to highly changing landscapes. Jeneberang Estuary, located south of Makassar, Indonesia, is one of the largest and most important river in Sulawesi. In this paper, a numerical model has recently been developed hydrodynamic and morphological evolution of the downstream rubber dam of the Jeneberang Estuary. The hydrodynamic model is derived from the hydro static assumption and Boussinesq approximation. A high-resolution computational grid was generated covering the Jeneberang estuary. The model was run with time driven by tidal forcing at the ocean boundary and river hydro graph at the upstream. The observed tidal data and hydrography were accessible for the set-up of the model. Hydrodynamic simulations have been performed and computed water levels were compared to observations of existing water level along the estuary from DISHIDRO data. For the period of a neap-spring-neap cycle, the model settings determined in the calibration process are verified satisfactions with respect to water level measurements. Good agreement was shown between model results and observed temporal and spatial variations in water elevation and currents, in the Jeneberang Estuary. The suspended sediments were generally transported from the Jeneberang River towards the Makassar Strait when overflow discharge through the Jeneberang Rubber Dam. The Global Ocean Ship-based Hydrographic Investigations Program (GO-SHIP) brings together scientists with interests in physical oceanography, the carbon cycle, marine biogeochemistry and ecosystems, and other users and collectors of ocean interior data, and coordinates a network of globally sustained hydrographic sections as part of the global ocean/climate observing system including physical oceanography, the carbon cycle, marine biogeochemistry and ecosystems. GO-SHIP provides approximately decadal resolution of the changes in inventories of heat, freshwater, carbon, oxygen, nutrients and transient tracers, covering the ocean basins from coast to coast and full depth (top to bottom), with global measurements of the highest required accuracy to detect these changes. The GO-SHIP principal scientific objectives are: (1) understanding and documenting the large-scale ocean water property distributions, their changes, and drivers of those changes, and (2) addressing questions of how a future ocean that will increase in dissolved inorganic carbon, become more acidic and more stratified, and experience changes in circulation and ventilation processes due to global warming and altered water cycle.

Greetings all, This month’s newsletter is devoted to the Mediterranean Sea and its various faces. As an introduction, an article by Drobinski et al. presents the HYMEX program (HYdrological cycle in Mediterranean Experiment) which is aiming at better understanding the global water cycle in the Mediterranean region. The next article by Langlais et al. is dealing with a high resolution coastal and shelf model in the Gulf of Lions. Then, Boy et al. are describing the input from spatial gravimetry to better represent the ocean circulation in the Mediterranean Sea. The next article by D’Ovidio et al. is telling us about tracer frontal structures induced by altimeter velocities with a lagrangian technique in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. The last article by L’Hévéder et al. is dealing with operational forecast of glider trajectories in the Mediterranean Sea using the Mercator forecasts. The next April 2009 newsletter will review the current work on ocean indices aiming at better understanding the state of the ocean climate. We wish you a pleasant reading.
