This presentation covers information on "Creating Effective Resumes" and "Mastering the Interview Skills." It was designed for a target audience consisting of International Graduate Business students. The presentation includes various interactive exercises, supporting handouts and worksheets.
Presented at Santa Clara University, CA in October 2005.
Want to make it an interactive session and not a lecture. We all have knowledge and experiences we can share. Lets break the ice by getting to know each other a little.
First round is just a quick round of introductions giving the information requested.
What would you like to hear / get from today’s presentation. Specify one area and what in that specifically. Eg. Resume, then what specifically in resumes are you eager to know about. I would like to write them out in a white board and let it stay there
To be done later, not at the work shop. Must print out and pass the resume worksheet to the students.
I would like to start by getting you familiar in how interviews take place in the U.S. What are the expectations of the interviewer etc. Having understood what an interview is like over here, I will proceed on talking to you about how to prepare for a successful interview. The presentation will then continue with a brief outline of the types of interviews I will then have some time for questions or concerns that you would have.

An interview is a two way process. An interviewer wants to find an outstanding candidate for the position or job as much as you want to find a fulfilling job. The interviewer needs to hire as much as you need to be hired. It helps to think of the process as one where both parties are hoping for a positive outcome There is no one “right” way to interview Interviewing is basically an unrehearsed conversation between two strangers that can result in the discussion taking as many different paths as there are people. For that reason it is very crucial to be comfortable with yourself. Every interview is unique The type of questions, the expectations and the outcome vary from interview to interview and you should look at each one separately. What may work in one may not necessarily find the same results in another.
In the US it is more than just skills and background information – you need to know yourself well, not just your strengths but also your weaknesses, what are you looking for in your career. Most important knowing all this but also being able to communicate it in a positive and convincing manner. Interview vary from country to country, for Eg. In some countries it is considered a very very formal and serious affair. Not to say it is not important in the United States, but it is ok here to have some informal conversation appropriately. It is a lot of preparation and work even for American students and so even more of a special challenge for international students, particularly with respect to culture. An american interview is not one which you can go to without preparation.
A handshake is very important and it has to be a firm handshake. It shows confidence on your side. Eye contact in this country is considered the most important non-verbal ques and shows self confidence and capability A warm smile gives a sense of friendliness and warmth to the situation – general impression of being a friendly person. Posture is very important – not slouching on the chair
It is important to feel confident and comfortable in what you wear. You can bring writing samples or portfolios with you. But make sure they are clean and good quality appearance and be prepared to leave them if necessary.
.
You want to present the highs and not the lows, you want to be confident but not arrogant, present enthusiasm and not doubt The American interviewer is looking for a strong individual who has a strong sense of self. Also some questions may not be very open ended, but it would not be appropriate for you to give yes or no answers. More information is necessary.
Activity to be done later at your time. Pass around Interview questions
Phone interviews can be very uncomfortable. Your oral communication skills become very important here.
The interviewer is not aware of your culture and values and have certain expectations of the people they interview. These expectation are largely unconcsious and it is important to be aware of their unconcious and culturally determined expectations in order to communicate effectively.
