Touchmark at Fairway Village - August 2014 Newsletter
1. Organizing expert Vicki Norris of Restoring
Order®
presented her third topic at Touchmark’s
Lunch ’n Learn series to a packed room of
residents and guests. She shared helpful tips
on how to manage and organize financial
paperwork. Walking through a slide show, Vicki
kept the audience entertained and engaged with
her humor and positive energy.
A sample of Vicki’s helpful tips:
• If there is more than one person in a household,
make sure each person has “assigned” duties to
deal with paperwork and mail. For example, a
couple can sit down and talk about who wants
to take on the monthly bills, medical/insurance
paperwork, and/or investment paperwork.
Communication ensures less stress for everyone.
• Specifically, when it comes to paying bills,
schedule time in your planner once or twice a
month to stay organized and pay bills on time,
which can save money and reduce stress.
• When creating a system to deal with paper, the
first step is to determine the longevity of each
document (e.g.,
temporary,
annual,
permanent,
archival).
Vicki has
two more
presentations.
Both are open
to the public.
The remaining
dates and
topics are:
• Sept. 10: Reclaim Your Health
• Nov. 12: Discover Your Purpose
The program starts at 12:30 pm and includes
lunch, which is $10. Vicki will start speaking at
1:15 pm, and people can choose to sign up for just
the presentation at no charge. Seating is limited,
and individuals must call to register.

3. A GLANCE AT OCTOBERCAPTURING DELIGHT{FULL} MOMENTS
“Summer fun—havin’ a blast!” Recent
events have included a Stepping Out
walk near Skamania Lodge, a cooking
demonstration, a dinner trip to a Brazilian
restaurant, and the car show.
Our environment, and how we feel about it, can
have a huge impact on the way we feel. For many,
the first areas that come to mind when we think of
environmental wellness are things like reducing and
conserving energy or reusing and recycling practices.
These areas should be important to all of us, and they
are areas of focus for Touchmark communities.
Another area to consider is the impact and benefits that house plants have on the environment and our
wellness. Research at Kansas State University (2006, Park, Seong-Hyun) on indoor plants identified
several therapeutic benefits, including reduced stress, lower heart rates and blood pressure, decreased pain
medication, and less fatigue and anxiety. Indoor plants also add color and brighten mood, moisturize and
purify the air, and sharpen focus and attention.
Some Touchmark communities have outdoor gardens, which are also beneficial for your body and soul.
Gardening is considered a moderate to intense form of exercise and uses all three types of recommended
activities—endurance, flexibility, and strength. Gardening also provides people with a sense of personal well-
being through stress relief, education, and the creation of friendships.
Indoors and outdoors, plants offer many benefits. Do you have a green thumb? Would you consider teaching
others how to have a green thumb? Share your thoughts and ideas with your community’s Life Enrichment/
Wellness team. Help us enhance environmental wellness; consider adding indoor plants to your home
environment. If you are interested in a list of safe plants, send me an email at FullLife@Touchmark.com.
