TOUCHMARK AT COFFEE CREEK
Introducing a champion
Each Touchmark community is nominating
several residents for the International Council
on Active Aging’s Champion program, part of
the organization’s Changing the Way we Age
Campaign. This month, meet Champion Katy
Winn.
Katy lives out her passion for staying active and
connecting with others. She visits with residents
who live in Touchmark’s Prairieview Memory
Care neighborhoods. “I love to connect with
others,” she says.
Katy has been an active member of the
Touchmark community for the past two-and-ahalf years, reflected in her recently receiving the
Resident of the Month award.
To maintain her involvement, Katy keeps fit
with a regular exercise regimen, which includes
walking all neighborhoods in the community each
evening. She uses the stairs and even does wall
push-ups prior to entering another floor.
“Katy is an extremely passionate and intelligent
person,” says Life Enrichment/Wellness Director
Carla Scull. “She offers companionship and a
genuine friendship to everyone she meets while
staying active in the Touchmark community.”
Katy is also a dog lover and was extremely fond of
her beloved dog, Jeff, the Husky.
Family memories and connections
Born in Akins, Okla., in 1927 on Easter Sunday,
Katy has lived most of her life in Tulsa. “I have
fond memories of being raised by a family of
strong women
(mother and
aunts),” she
says.
Katy attended
Oklahoma State
University prior
to spending
most of her
career as an
engineering
secretary
working with
dozens of field
engineers.
She has been
blessed with two sons, John Michael and James
Steven.
During their 25-year marriage, Katy and her
husband, Fred, enjoyed many activities and
hobbies.
One of their favorites was to spend time at their
house on Lake Eufaula boating, fishing, and
relaxing. They both stayed involved in their
church, Asbury United Methodist Church in
Tulsa. It was there that Katy did her in-depth
training as part of the Stephen Ministry program.
Since her training, she has enjoyed close to 30
years of “visiting and listening wherever the
church sent me.” Visiting, listening, and serving—
clearly her lifelong passions—and the qualities of
a true champion.
