Touchmark Car Show & Bloomsday Walk Event Highlights
1. TOUCHMARK ON SOUTH HILL
THE{FULL}LIFE
June 2014
This June: First-ever Touchmark Car Show!
All are invited to Touchmark’s
Car Show Saturday, June 21 to
view custom and classic cars.
The show runs from 10 am to
4 pm and will include a hot-
dog lunch and music by the
band Hit ’n Run.
Among the various cars,
attendees can see Grant
Person’s restored 1931 Buick.
A lifelong car enthusiast,
Grant and his wife, Dixie,
live in the Touchmark at
Grapetree neighborhood. “I
also have a 1940 Buick that
was my grandfather’s. I’ve had
it since I was 16 years old.”
Grant received his degree in
Industrial Arts and taught shop and graphic design classes for junior and high school students for five
years before entering the restaurant and tavern business. Later, he moved into real estate for more
than 40 years.
Even with a varied career background, Grant’s passion for cars and mechanical work has stayed
with him. “I have a great appreciation for cars,” says Grant, who enjoys going to the car swap meets
in Portland, Oregon, and Buick car shows. He has even visited the Hershey antique car show in
Pennsylvania.
In addition to the two Buicks, Grant has owned some older Jeeps that he rebuilt, an older GMC
pickup, a Buick coupe, and one of the first Chevy Suburbans.
Join Grant and other car enthusiasts June 21 to swap stories and share the fun!

2. Throughout Spokane, feet pounded the pavement. Thousands
of participants gathered for the city’s annual Bloomsday run/
walk. The Touchmark community joined the festivities with a
mini walk, dubbed The Spirit of Bloomsday.
“I have a daughter and four great-granddaughters in Spokane,
and for years, I’ve heard about Bloomsday. I realized that this
was a great event,” says Mary Smith, who moved to Touchmark
from California three years ago. “I thought it would be great to
do something at Touchmark.”
Mary connected with Touchmark Fitness Specialist Kathy
Kalich to organize the event. Soon, resident and artist Audrey
Haley joined the ladies and designed a promotional flyer as well as a button for participants to wear.
Dozens of people turned out for the Touchmark walk. Each donned a number. “It was a delightful
experience,” says Audrey. “Everyone was laughing and enjoying themselves. We all had such a good time.”
The ladies are hoping for 100 participants next year. “It is wonderful to be involved in this event in the city of
Spokane,” says Mary.
Connect with community
This month, we’re featuring
the Abbey cottage at 1708 E
32nd Court (pictured). The
home offers 1,208 square
feet, two bedrooms, two
bathrooms, and a newly
updated kitchen. We invite
you to tour Touchmark and
take part in an event or
activity—and see how being
part of a community can
enrich your life.

punch reception.
The Men’s Club focused on The Worst Hard Time,
which covers the untold story from the American
dust bowl, written by New York Times journalist
Timothy Egan. Executive Director Jeff Bair
facilitated the presentation and discussion.
For Arlene Amann, the decision
to move to Touchmark on South
Hill came down to three things—
location, location, location!
The native New Yorker and
retired sales assistant for a real-
estate company in Virginia knew
she wanted to live close to her
family, but equally important
was the type of place she wanted
to call home.
“My daughter, her husband (who
is a local pulmonologist), and
their two sons live in Spokane,”
says Arlene. “But it took me a
couple of years doing research
on the local real-estate market
before I decided on Touchmark.
It was very important that my
new home had continual care,
and Touchmark offered that
feature.”
She chose a 1,300-square-foot
cottage because of its great
location on the
South Hill. She
loved the well-
maintained
look and feel
of the campus
and, she says, “I
really fit in.” In
addition, Arlene
remembers
the staff being
helpful—not
pushy—while
she was making
her decision.
“I’m a fairly active person,”
she says. “I bowl in a league
with my daughter, and I rarely
miss water aerobics class at Oz
Fitness, which is just up the
hill from here. In addition, I
work out on the treadmill in
the Touchmark exercise room
and walk the loop—if weather
permits. Birthday dinners are
a great opportunity to dress up
and socialize … The Touchmark
shuttle even picks me up at my
cottage, so I don’t have to worry
about walking by myself or
getting caught in the rain!”
Arlene believes she made a smart
choice. “Spokane is a great town
with a lot to offer. But most
important is I now live in a great
spot, close to my family, and we
can all share it together.”
“It’s all here!”
