This interactive lesson on addition and subtraction will combine the art and science of teaching while teaching toward all learning styles. Students will learn the basic concepts behind addition and subtraction, be given time to “see” how addition and subtraction is completed through examples and use of the number line, and solidify their understanding of the concepts through hands on application in the form of a flashcard creating activity
In this slide we familiarize students with the terminology they will use for this lesson.
We can also use dots to help us add things together. Our addition problem is 2 + 4. Let’s use dots to tell us what 2 + 4 equals….draw 2 dots on your paper… now add the plus sign…draw 4 dots on your paper…add the equal sign…let’s count the dots. We have 6 dots. So, 2 + 4 = 6.
Addition is the science adding numbers. When we add numbers we can also use items..like candy! We can add candy together and get more candy! If we have 2 pieces of candy and Cindy gives us 3 more pieces of candy, now we have 5 pieces of candy! That’s addition..2 + 3 = 5. Let’s count the candy together and make sure we have the correct answer….
You can also do addition on a number line. When we use number lines to help with addition, we always move to the right. Lets add 2 + 2 again… if you start at the number 2 and move to the right 2 spaces we end at the number 4. This shows us that 2 + 2 = 4.
In this slide we familiarize students with the terminology they will use for this lesson.
Using the same process as we did for addition can also use dots to help us subtract. The subtraction problem is 4 - 2. Let’s use dots to tell us what 4 - 2 equals….draw 4 dots on your paper… now draw 4 dots and cross out 2 on your paper…add the equal sign…let’s count the dots. We have 2 dots. So, 4-2 =6.
. Subtraction is the science deducting numbers. When can hide what is being subtracted using shapes and fruit! If we have 3 lemons and Cindy covers some with a square and leaves 1 lemon out, how many lemons are under the square? Then we would subtract the total number lemons, 3, from the 1 that we can see…3 – 1 = 2
3 – 1 = 2 is correct!!!
You can also do subtraction on a number line. When we use number lines to help with subtraction, we always move to the left. Lets 1 from 3 again… if you start at the number 3 and move to the left 1 space we end at the number 2. This shows us that 3 - 1 = 2.
We will use the problems on the math worksheet to create our flashcards. For example, on your first card you will paste 5 objects and on the flash card and you will mark off 2 objects using your marker. How many are left? That is your answer. You will write that at the bottom of your card.
