2. Commercial radio is the broadcasting of radio
programmes that are owned by private companies.
Commercial radio is the majority of radio stations
outside of the BBC, as they are publicly owned .
Stations such as BBC are public service broadcasters
and there main aim is to: Entertain, Inform and to
Educate as they are more concerned about the
listeners, and already have the money.
3. Stands for Public Service Broadcasting and is
broadcasted for the benefit of the public and their
needs.
All of the BBC’s television and radio stations have
a public service remit, including those that
broadcast digitally.
4. BBC 1- The remit states that it represents 15 to 19
years olds and should play a contemporary mix of
music.
BBC 2 – Has a wide target audience and a wide
music variety, their target audience which ranges
from people over 35 years old and has all different
speech based content.
BBC 3- Dedicated to Classical and Jazz. They state
that it is open for any age willing to expand there
cultural horizons.
5. BBC 4 – The BBC state that they should appeal to
those who are seeking intelligent programmes in
many genres which include Dramas and Comedy.
BBC 5 – A station which is dedicated to sport
coverage and news. Appeals to everyone of all
different backgrounds.
BBC 6 – Plays old and current music which
wouldn't be played on BBC 1 OR 2 and is outside
the mainstream.
6. The BBC and commercial radios are doing a
variety of things to improve their stations and
introduce new technologies.
They have been able to let you access live radio
shows through the internet.
This has revolutionised the radio station and now
more people can access them whenever.
7. Community radio is a type of radio service that offers a
third model of radio broadcasting.
They are privately owned and operated by the
communities they broadcast too.
Since 2005, 200 non for profit radio stations have
been licensed by the UK broadcasting regulator,
Ofcom. Majority of these radio stations are
broadcasted on FM
An example of a non profit radio is K2K, which
represents Kilburn to Kensal area.
8. Number of UK employees – 22,800
Number of UK employers – 350
Gender – 52% Male
48% Female
Age – 42% of the workforce is under 35 years
Ethnicity – 7% of the workforce is from a Black, Asian
and minority background.
9. In my opinion, what makes a radio station better
than another, is a good playlist which includes a
wide variety of music which isn’t repeated during
the show.
I also think that having plenty of banter is crucial,
and it’s important because its a chance for the
presenter to express their feelings on a topic.
10. I think that local and community radios are better
for a niche audience because the audience tends
to smaller and therefore it is easier for the
audience to interact with the stations.
I also think it is better because then the radio
stations can see who the niche audience is and
see how they can attract different audiences to
tune in.
11. Each radio station has there own target audience and
they are who the radio station appeals to the most.
For example:
BBC Radio 1- Their target audience is 15 to 19 years
olds and should play a cotemporary mix of music whilst
also having discussions which teenagers can relate too.
You will find that each age group tends to have a station
which suits their taste in music and as long as they can
relate to the station then they will continue to listen.
12. I personally prefer Absolute radio as they have a
very good and wide range of Music and are
always constant on banter, and have always got
something to talk about.
I think that this station doesn’t appeal to teenagers
as the music and banter appeals to an older target
audience.
13. Absolute Radio is an independent radio station
which is based in London and plays popular rock
music. From 1993 to 2008 the station was formally
known as Virgin Radio but then changed into
Absolute Radio in 2008. Absolute has many other
stations which include, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s’ 00’s
and Classic Rock. You can only tune in to those
stations by having a DAB radio which is Digital
Audio Broadcasting and is radio technology for
broadcasting radio stations.
