2. Bullying is...
Bullying is an act of repeated
aggressive behavior in order to
intentionally hurt another person,
physically or mentally. Bullying is
characterized by an individual behaving
in a certain way to gain power over
another person.
3. Why is bullying
harmful?
Some people think bullying is just part of
growing up and a way for young people to
learn to stick up for themselves. But
bullying can make young people feel
lonely, unhappy and frightened. It makes
them feel unsafe and think there must be
something wrong with them. They lose
confidence and may not want to go to
school any more. It may make them sick.
6. Emotional bullying
Spreading rumors about people
Keeping certain people out of a “group”
Ignoring people on purpose
Provocation
7. Verbal bullying
Name calling
Commenting negatively on someone's looks,
clothes, body
Harrasment
Tormenting
8. Helping victims
Speak with the victim and ask them if they want
to do anything about it, if they refuse take your
part and start investigating.
After investigating the situation, it may be that
intervention is necessary with the bully or
bullies. The situation needs to be addressed.
Ideally, a resolution to the problem will be
found.
9. Helping victims
Inform the parents of the victim and of the
bully. Discuss possible solutions with them.
Arrange a meeting with them if possible.
Follow up in communicating with the victim, the
parents and the teachers about the situation.
Monitor the behavior of the bully and the safety
of the victim on a school-wide basis.
10. Helping victims
If the problem continues speak with the parents
of the bully again and consider the idea of
expulsion of the bully if problems continue,
bullies normally attack not only one child but
more than one, and normally 3 to 4 children are
the attackers, find out exactly who they are.
11. Helping victims
Finally you should decide for yourself the
punishment, it depends on how they attacked
the children, how many they have been
attacking, since when has it been a problem.
12. Are you a bully?
Have you ever bullied someone else?
Think about why you did it and how
you were feeling at the time. If you are
sometimes a bully, try to find other
ways to make yourself feel good.
Most bullies aren't liked, even if it
starts out that way. Remember, it's best
to treat others the way you would like
to be treated.
