London is now the highest performing region At break in the time series, end of Key Stage 4 attainment was consistently 0.2ppt above equivalent figures for 15 year olds. For 5 years running London’s secondary schools have outperformed the national average in the proportion of students achieving 5+ A*-C GCSEs including English and maths. London has reached the level of the PSA target set for 2011 (53%). 15 year olds End of Key Stage 4

London is unique in this country because it has two characteristics: The challenges of the inner city The challenges of being part of the high-cost south east It’s not the only place in the country with one of these characteristics, but it’s the only one with both. The first is illustrated in this map of London: it shows deprivation at ward level – the darker the blue, the more deprived the ward. The darkest blue areas are in the 1000 most deprived wards in the country – around 200 in London. That’s a very significant concentration – especially in the inner eastern arc running from Haringey in the North round through Islington, Hackney, Tower Hamlets and Newham and S of the River through Greenwich, Lewisham, Southwark and Lambeth But it’s also true that right across London, from Enfield in the north to Croydon in the south; Hillingdon in the west to Havering in the east, there are pockets of very significant deprivation
