       Letter from the President
The fiscal year that ended April 30, 2010 marked our first year after
Diabetes Hands Foundation received its 501(c)(3) determination from the US
Internal Revenue Service (in September 2009). This important milestone
made us eligible for government and private grants that were not available
to us until then. Additionally, all donations to Diabetes Hands Foundation
became tax deductible retroactively to the date of our incorporation in
                                                    March 2008.

In August 2009, EsTuDiabetes turned 2 years old, with more than 4,000
members. In March 2010, TuDiabetes turned 3 years old and had reached
14,000 registered members. In both communities nearly 40% of the visitors
(registered or not) kept coming back on a regular basis.

In time for World Diabetes Day 2009, we launched our Making Sense of
Diabetes video. This video came as a result of our first video-based
awareness initiative. We asked members to share with the community on
video the story of with their life with diabetes through one of the five senses.
This project was sponsored by Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc.

On World Diabetes Day 2009, we launched the Big Blue Test, one of our
most successful awareness program to date. As a result, if you searched for
“Big Blue Test” on Google you get almost 200,000 results. On the Big Blue Test,
we invite people with diabetes to test their blood sugar, exercise for 14
minutes, test again and share the experience.

In early 2010, we launched the Diabetes Advocates program, aimed at
pooling the resources of individuals and groups dedicated to diabetes

inform people at diabetes conferences in 2010 about the blogs, online
communities and newsletters developed by the nearly 30 members that
joined the program in its first year.

By the April 2010, we were ready to launch the TuAnalyze application on
TuDiabetes. This application resulted from a collaboration with Harvard
Medical School’s Children’s Hospital Boston. The application lets TuDiabetes
members track, share and compare their diabetes data with others. Data
shared also helps nonprofit research studies conducted by Harvard Medical
School to better understand how social networks can be used to improve the
health of those who participate in them.

Also by May 2010, we were nearing the launch of HealthSeeker, the first
Facebook game aimed at helping players develop healthy lifestyle habits
with the support of their network of friends. We developed this game in
collaboration with Joslin Diabetes Center and was also made possible thanks
to the financial support of Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc.

Last, during this year we produced the No-Sugar Added Poetry book,
sponsored by Roche Diagnostics. The book is the first offline initiative of the
foundation and is available starting the summer of 2010.

Diabetes Hands Foundation has continued to get significant media
coverage, through articles on The Indianapolis Star, Examiner.com, The
Huntsville Times and Mashable.com. Our work was also featured on the
                                                     Social by Social book.

Throughout the fiscal year, we diversified our funding sources by
conducting two online fundraising campaigns (one in September 2009 and
one in December 2009), securing nonprofit contracts (as in the case of our
collaboration with Children’s Hospital Boston), developing new sponsorship
relationships for our programs and including limited ads on our communities
                                                     and newsletters.

The Diabetes Hands Foundation (DHF) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that connects
people touched by diabetes and raises diabetes awareness.

Through its online communities (TuDiabetes.org in English, EsTuDiabetes.org in
Spanish) and its other social media channels, DHF offers support and
information to more than 200,000 people every month.

Both communities offer a culturally sensitive experience to their members
(people with diabetes as well as their loved ones), helping them connect with
others they can relate with. Our members can message each other or
participate in discussions with the rest of the community. They can share videos,
photos and blog about their lives with diabetes. Members can start their own
groups or join existing interest groups.

On TuDiabetes, members can track, share and compare their diabetes data,

                                                  Hospital Boston.

Since 2008, DHF has developed pioneering diabetes awareness programs that
involve the participation of community members on the generation of diabetes
awareness materials. Each program revolves around a specific theme and
works as an interactive conduit that connects individuals through self-
expression and creativity. As a result, the community participates in the
generation of useful and authentic content, which in turn, strengthens the
community through the participation and empowerment of its members.

DHF – Progress Report 2010

  • 1.   Annual Report May 2009 to April 2010   Diabetes Hands Foundation | Annual Report | May 1, 2009 to April 30, 2010
  • 2. Annual Report | May 1, 2009 to April 30, 2010   Letter from the President The fiscal year that ended April 30, 2010 marked our first year after Diabetes Hands Foundation received its 501(c)(3) determination from the US Internal Revenue Service (in September 2009). This important milestone made us eligible for government and private grants that were not available to us until then. Additionally, all donations to Diabetes Hands Foundation became tax deductible retroactively to the date of our incorporation in March 2008. In August 2009, EsTuDiabetes turned 2 years old, with more than 4,000 members. In March 2010, TuDiabetes turned 3 years old and had reached 14,000 registered members. In both communities nearly 40% of the visitors (registered or not) kept coming back on a regular basis. In time for World Diabetes Day 2009, we launched our Making Sense of Diabetes video. This video came as a result of our first video-based awareness initiative. We asked members to share with the community on video the story of with their life with diabetes through one of the five senses. This project was sponsored by Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc. On World Diabetes Day 2009, we launched the Big Blue Test, one of our most successful awareness program to date. As a result, if you searched for “Big Blue Test” on Google you get almost 200,000 results. On the Big Blue Test, we invite people with diabetes to test their blood sugar, exercise for 14 minutes, test again and share the experience. In early 2010, we launched the Diabetes Advocates program, aimed at pooling the resources of individuals and groups dedicated to diabetes advocacy. By the April 2010, we were ready to launch the TuAnalyze application on TuDiabetes. This application resulted from a collaboration with Harvard Medical School’s Children’s Hospital Boston. The application lets TuDiabetes members track, share and compare their diabetes data with others. Data shared also helps nonprofit research studies conducted by Harvard Medical School to better understand how social networks can be used to improve the health of those who participate in them. Also by May 2010, we were nearing the launch of HealthSeeker, the first Facebook game aimed at helping players develop healthy lifestyle habits with the support of their network of friends. We developed this game in collaboration with Joslin Diabetes Center and was also made possible thanks to the financial support of Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Last, during this year we produced the No-Sugar Added Poetry book, sponsored by Roche Diagnostics. The book is the first offline initiative of the foundation and is available starting the summer of 2010. Diabetes Hands Foundation has continued to get significant media coverage, through articles on The Indianapolis Star, Examiner.com, The Huntsville Times and Mashable.com. Our work was also featured on the Social by Social book. Throughout the fiscal year, we diversified our funding sources by conducting two online fundraising campaigns (one in September 2009 and one in December 2009), securing nonprofit contracts (as in the case of our collaboration with Children’s Hospital Boston), developing new sponsorship relationships for our programs and including limited ads on our communities and newsletters. • 4. Annual Report | May 1, 2009 to April 30, 2010   About the Diabetes Hands Foundation     The Diabetes Hands Foundation (DHF) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that connects people touched by diabetes and raises diabetes awareness. Through its online communities (TuDiabetes.org in English, EsTuDiabetes.org in Spanish) and its other social media channels, DHF offers support and information to more than 200,000 people every month. Both communities offer a culturally sensitive experience to their members (people with diabetes as well as their loved ones), helping them connect with others they can relate with. Our members can message each other or participate in discussions with the rest of the community. They can share videos, photos and blog about their lives with diabetes. Members can start their own groups or join existing interest groups. On TuDiabetes, members can track, share and compare their diabetes data, using the TuAnalyze application, developed in collaboration with Children's Hospital Boston. Since 2008, DHF has developed pioneering diabetes awareness programs that involve the participation of community members on the generation of diabetes awareness materials. Each program revolves around a specific theme and works as an interactive conduit that connects individuals through self- expression and creativity. As a result, the community participates in the generation of useful and authentic content, which in turn, strengthens the community through the participation and empowerment of its members.
