This document discusses issues related to multiculturalism in urban areas of wealthier countries. It notes that many cities have become more ethnically diverse but also face problems with racial segregation. Strategies aimed at supporting diversity try to ensure equal access to services while not forcing integration. Examples given include improving education and employment opportunities in disadvantaged neighborhoods as well as providing facilities that encourage community involvement from all groups.

There are aspects of urban living in a
richer part of the world that need careful
planning in order to support the
population and environment of cities and
towns.
Cultural Mix – factors causing ethnic
segregation within urban areas.
Strategies aimed at supporting the
multicultural nature of many urban areas
3. Lesson Objectives
• All will recognise that the UK’s
cities are more ethnically diverse
than the rest of the country and
understand the problems of
racial segregation in urban areas.
• Most will understand what
strategies have been introduced
to integrate different ethnic
groups in urban areas.
• Some will understand the pros
and cons of there being a
multicultural society, that many
of the cons are perceived rather
than real and be able to evaluate
the success of these integration
strategies.
5. Key Terms
• Segregation
Occurs when people of a particular ethnic
group choose to live with others from
the same ethnic group, separating
themselves from other groups.
6. Your Opinion
• Do you think that ethnic
segregation is a problem
here in the West Midlands?
• Why do you think
segregation happens?
Discuss these points with the
others on your table in
preparation for a class
discussion
7. Why do ethnic minority groups
cluster in one area?
Support from others
• People feel safe and secure when they can
associate with other people of the same
background, religion and language. There is a
sense of belonging and protection from
racial abuse.
A familiar culture
• In a strange culture, there is comfort from
being with people who have similar ideas and
beliefs and speak the same language.
Facilities
• People want to live near to services that are
important to their culture. E.g. Sikhs can
worship in a gurdwara and Moslems in a
Mosque (e.g. Highgate Mosque, Birmingham).
Familiar foodstuffs will be available in shops
(e.g. Sai Dataa Sarees, Sparkhill,
Birmingham)
8. Why do ethnic minority groups
cluster in one area? (continued)
Strength in Numbers
• People have a stronger voice if
they are heard as a group,
rather than individually (e.g.
campaigning for counter
terrorism cameras to be
removed in Sparkbrook,
Birmingham)
Employment factors
• Immigrant groups tend to do low
paid jobs or have a high rate of
unemployment. They have limited
money and so can only afford
cheaper housing in certain parts
of the city, usually inner city
areas.
9. What can be done to integrate different
ethnic groups and reduce segregation?
Work in groups to come up with a list of
proposals for what we can do here in the
West Midlands to reduce segregation.
Strategies to support the multicultural nature of
urban areas are not aimed at forcing people to mix
but to make sure that everyone has equal access t
services like healthcare and education
10. Measures taken to reduce
segregation in Birmingham…
• Increasing children’s achievement by improving
educational provision and opportunities in deprived
areas: and seeking to improve literacy in areas where
English can be a second language
• Increasing employment through initiatives to ensure
basic skills and access to information and training
• Increasing community involvement by ensuring that
the needs of minority groups are understood and met
• Providing facilities that encourage meetings of all
sections of a community rather than separate ethnic
groups
11. Strategies to reduce ethnic
segregation:
Make sure everyone can access information
about services – e.g. print leaflets in a variety
of languages
Improve communication between all parts of the
community e.g. by involving the leaders of
different ethnic communities when making
decisions
Providing interpreters at places like hospitals
and police stations
Make sure there are suitable services for the
different cultures – e.g. provide same sex
doctors
13. Lesson Objectives
• All will understand the
problems of racial
segregation in urban areas in
richer countries.
• Most will understand what
strategies have been

different ethnic groups in
urban areas.
• Some will be able to
evaluate the success of
these solutions.
