At the ripe old age of 32, I was thrust into the Breast Cancer survivor group. This put me into a
category of women I really never expected to be in much less be in at such an early age. Never the

I'm grateful I can send my kids one weekend in October to a sibling camp in South Carolina, Camp
New Horizons, for bereaved siblings. I help them gather mementos of their brother to share with the
others at the camp. I thank God they have the friendships of children their ages, who know what it is
like to say good-bye to a brother or sister.
Among other things that were supposed to happen in the 1990s, we had the launch of the The Tyler

My children love watching the latest and greatest movies, but I just grin when I hear my children
singing the songs I used to sing as a kid - "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" or "Tomorrow".
Hearing their little off-key renditions is the best music to my ears.
Be there to help during chemo by offering to do household chores, cook dinners or just come by to
keep them company (if you are welcome). Ask them how they are that day and then be a good
listener when they want to talk about it. Assure them that you love them and that you will continue
to be around when they need you. It's best not to ask too many specific questions about the
treatments or get into the details. If they want to talk about it, they will.
As they continue to heal they may decide to add some positive life style changes. You can continue to
be there for them by offering to walk or diet with them as they recover and beyond.
