2. Before the video is made?
Responses to the research questions: Before the video is made – Audience Research
- Summaries of the responses received from the survey.
Are you a Female or Male?
Female
Male
Male
Female
Female
Majority of the responses collected were from females with the minority in terms of this survey being
male. This influences the research a lot as we are able to know what both male and female think.
Being able to have both opinions of both genders will help us establish a better storyboard and idea
for our music video. The music video should appeal to both male and females. It should entice
females to want to be like her and make men want to be with her.
Do you think the music video should conform or subvert to a typical R'n'B video?
Conform
Conform
Subvert
Subvert
Conform
The overall response for this question is that the music video should conform to the typical R’n’B
video simply because they couldn’t imagine a video that wasn’t typically R’n’B. The minority who
wanted the video to subvert wanted to see if we could challenge ourselves and change what people
see as a typical R’n’B video. By conforming the music video we are giving the audience what they
want and also sticking within specific guidelines. The guidelines help shape our music video into what
the audience want and asked to see.
Should the main focus be on the protagonist? Yes/No
Yes
No
Yes
Yes
Yes
Majority of the audience wanted the main focus of the video to be of the protagonist and her story as
the assumed that that’s what made a music video more relatable, as well as the song telling the
story the music video has to also tell a story. The one person who didn’t agree wanted the video to
focus on someone else completely irrelevant to the song and video. The protagonist being the main
focus of the video gives someone of star quality to follow and admire. Without a main person the
video would be very random and very hard to follow by an audience who wasn’t present during the
duration of making the video.
3. Before the video is made?
What do you think are the typical conventions of an R'n'B music video
Ghetto
Glamorous
Long beautiful weave
Attractive Protagonist
Story
The answers received for this question were basically describing a typical video that we have all seen
time and time again. The artists are always glamorous and in some cases coming from the ghetto.
They always seem to have long beautiful hair that is not theirs naturally and also they are always
very attractive. A story is always told. Our video will include some of these ideas as they can be done
but others cannot be fully exploited due to such a low budget.
Should we show the protagonist’s love interest? Yes/No
Yes
No
No
Yes
N/A
The decision on this question was a very split as half said yes and half said no and the final person
was unsure of what they wanted to see. Their reasons for this is that some of them felt that we
should leave it as a mystery or to the imagination but then the others felt that as we have gone
through the whole song and its leading up to that moment that we may as well satisfy them with
revealing the love interest.
Should the music video present the protagonist as, Sexy/Casual/Innocent?
Sexy
Sexy
Innocent
Casual
Casual
This question was asked as we wanted to know what they would enjoy to watch more, the choice
was split so the finale answer will be revealed in our work but we will most probably do a mixture of
the two.
How do you envision the music video starting?
Morning/Sunshine
Dancers
Beach
Water
Ending of music video, re-wind
4. Before the video is made?
The answers were related to each other as these are all how normal R’n’B videos start, quite a few
music videos begin the story with a sunrise and then they throw in some dancing to get the
audience’s attention or in some cases they are dancing during a sunrise on a beach near water. The
last suggestion was interesting and caught the groups’ attention as it’s not done as often as the
others.
