Definition
Drill software can be very helpful in this regard to help
students’ master basic skills and is based on behaviorist
theory
It reinforces basic skills for example spelling words,
development of reading vocabulary, or typing programs.
Spelling, vocabulary, and typing are important skills that
would enhance student performance when composing
independent written work
Features
 Drill is developmentally appropriate for the student.
 reinforces skills already taught .
 is based on the individual student's needs .
 meets the curriculum outcomes.
 provides a positive learning experience for the student .
 provides appropriate stimuli, response required, and reinforcement for
the student.
Specific components
 1. Establish a defensive philosophy and commit to
it.
 2. All defensive drills are competitive.
 3. Drills include "conditions" that help players be
accountable.
 4. Drills must be tougher than the game.
 5. Incorporate game preparation into defensive
drills.
 6. Demand toughness, thinking, and
communication.
Uses in Education
 It seem to be more effective for low-ability
students
 It is helpful to students reviewing materials with which
they had prior familiarity.
 The results of the study suggest that drill based lessons
can be an effective means of teaching students of varying
learning styles.
The assumption
 The assumption with a drill is that the student has already
had the concept presented to him, that the material has
been seen before, and the purpose now is to gain
familiarity and develop some familiarity with the ideas.
 Since the purpose of the drill is to increase learning
effectiveness through repeated practice based on a
stimulus-response (S-R) theory of behaviorism, the
frequency of repetition should have a direct effect on
achievement
Hypotheses
 Drill combined with picture-enhanced presentation will induce the
highest
 instructional efficiency during the learning process.
 - Instructional analogy combined with text-only presentation will induce
the lowest
 instructional efficiency during the learning process.
 - Drill combined with text-only presentation will lead to a moderate level
of
 instructional efficiency.
 - Instructional analogy combined with picture-enhanced presentation will
lead to a
 moderate level of instructional efficiency.
 - There will be an interaction effect between the instructional method and
 instructional multimedia factors.
 The Significant Digits Drill software consists of a set of tutorials and drills. The tutorials
cover the basic concepts of: what is a significant digit; how to find the number of
significant digits in a given number; and how to use significant digits in addition &
subtraction, multiplication & division, and in reading instruments.
