HP is investing in scalable video coding (SVC) technology to capitalize on the growing video conferencing market opportunity. SVC allows for compelling high definition video on low bandwidth networks through dynamic adjustment of bandwidth, resolution, and error localization. It reduces costs compared to traditional video conferencing through software-based encoding/decoding and elimination of dedicated infrastructure. HP's SVC technology integrated with its UC&C portfolio and services aims to foster ubiquitous visual collaboration solutions for customers.

- Traditional video conferencing architecture relies on multipoint control units (or MCUs) to encode and decode video and audio streams between multiple endpoints. This technology is expensive and very intolerant to data or packet loss associated with lower bandwidth and lower quality of service networks. As a result, network congestion has a catastrophic effect on the video quality for participants, adding significant latency. IT responds to this issue by increasing network bandwidth and buying expensive, dedicated WAN circuits. This drives up the overall cost of delivering and managing video.HP’s Visual Collaboration video engine eliminates the need for antiquated MCU technology and efficiently adjusts to low network performance to deliver compelling high definition video experiences anytime, anywhere. This innovative engine running on industry standard servers utilizes Scalable Video Coding (or SVC) to intelligently distinguish between more and less critical video packets, to ensure that high video quality is maintained even in a challenging network environment. The HP video router is able to dynamically adjust for available bandwidth by simply dropping less critical video packets without requiring any significant computing (and therefore cost) at a centralized point. The robustness of SVC allows companies to run video over the corporate network or on less expensive and shared WAN circuits. The result is better video quality and better user experiences despite the challenges of networking capacity and capabilities. In other words…the customer saves a lot of money…
