Slide Objective:Concise view of the top features and benefits which will be available at launchTalking Points:Lync Online is a cloud communications service that connects people in new ways with anyone, anywhere. The top features that make this a reality are:Slick, new user interface that includes contact photos (so you can recognize your colleagues in a meeting), dynamic activity feed to quickly know what the people in your network are working on, and better contact card experience in office that let’s you click to communicate from anywhere in Office.Ad-hoc online meetings that include audio, video and screen or application sharing – you typically start with presence and IM (in response to an email for example) and then with a few mouse clicks add audio/video and screen sharing as necessary to resolve issues effectively and quickly. The same great experience is available for scheduled online meetings (or web conferences) with an easy to use outlook add-in for scheduling and one-click to join from outlook reminders. External participants can join an online meeting using either a web client and dialing in on a phone, or a rich client that has the full capabilities. Finally, Lync Online extends all these rich communication capabilities to people outside of your organization. With IM federation you can see presence, instant message, make pc-to-pc calls and have ad-hoc meetings with other Lync users (on-premises and online). In addition you can communicate with your Windows Live Messenger contacts using Lync.
Slide Objective:Provide a high level overview and timeline of which Lync capabilities are going to be available in the cloud (and when)Talking Points:Lync Online is the cloud version of the Lync, with Microsoft hosting the Lync servers and customers consume Lync as a service. Lync Online is one component of the BPOS W14 suite of services, which also includes the 2010 versions of Exchange, SharePoint and Office. This slide provides a comparison of the Lync Online capabilities with those of the Lync Server. Going from left to right, you can see that IM/presence and conferencing (online meetings) will be available at BPOS W14 launch in Lync Online.Voice, which is essentially the ability to call the public phone networks (think dial tone in Lync), will become available in the cloud several months after Lync Online launches.PBX replace capabilities, which include features that require integration with on-premises networks and equipment is not planned to be available in Lync Online in the next few years. This means that customers who are looking to take advantage of the full PBX replace capabilities in Lync Server 2010, are advised to deploy Lync Server on premises (for all of the Lync workloads – IM, conferencing and Enterprise voice). It should be noted that customers will still be able to deploy Exchange (and SharePoint) in the cloud including voice mail and have that work seamlessly with Lync Server 2010 on-premises. In the next slides we will look at these features and deployment options in more detail.
Slide Objective:Summarize the 2 main options for customers when deciding how to deploy Lync and the rest of the BPOS suite Talking Points:Now you have a more solid understanding of the scope and timeline of the Lync capabilities in the cloud and how they compare to Lync Server. The table on this slide provides a summary of the 2 key deployment options that customers can choose from at the time of BPOS W14 launch (Q1CY2011):The left hand side column represents a ‘pure cloud deployment’, with Lync Online as part of BPOS W14. the available Lync capabilities in this scenario are enterprise IM and conferencing (aka online meetings). Integrated PSTN audio conferencing is available with Lync Online as a separate service from partners. Cloud Voice (without PBX replace capabilities) is planned for 6-9 months post launch. Customers who are looking to take advantage of the full costs savings and capabilities of Lync, can choose to deploy Lync Server on-premises for all workloads. The additional capabilities here are PSTN audio conferencing on Lync Server (which typically represents a significant cost savings opportunity for customers) and full enterprise voice including PBX replace. This deployment model for Lync works with Exchange Online and SharePoint Online. In Q4 CY2011, when split domain becomes supported in Lync, customers can split groups of users between these 2 deployment options.
In your own application you can do that as well, and more. You can essentially pass a link that allows the receiver to start the same application so you both are looking at the same data when you start talking.
Using the Lync 2010 Managed API you can also start completely from scratch. This is a lower level API that allows you to build your completely new UI.For example on the left you can see a Kiosk application of Global Crossing. This UI does not look like Lync 2010, but in essence works as a receptionist.A visitor registers. And then uses the Lync 2010 API to call the person visited. The person visited uses Lync 2010 to respond and sees the person who is visiting. Also in the Conversation Window Extension you can built in what ever Silverlight or HTML application you want.
SituationIf employees have to learn new user interfaces and change their work practices as part of a move to the cloud, the result would be dissatisfaction and higher support costs. However, because Exchange Online allows users to continue to work as they do now, you have the freedom to “swap out” your back-end infrastructure with minimal disruption.Slide objectiveShow how Exchange Online enables users to work just as they would with on-premises Exchange.Talking pointsAnywhere access means that users are not tied to their desks but can connect to their mailbox with a consistent experience across PC, web, and mobile. Exchange Online provides a full-featured Outlook experience without the need for a VPN connection, including features in cached mode such as the offline address book.Outlook Web Access provides a premium online access experience that matches the look and feel of the full Outlook client.Mobile access is available from a wide range of devices that connect directly to Exchange via the ActiveSync protocol. And you get Large 25GB mailboxes mean that users don’t waste time cleaning out their mailboxes to make space, or moving email to offline PST files that can’t be accessed from web browsers or mobile devices. All their email data is available to them, wherever they go.
