12. Wind Energy Challenge This is a snapshot of the new score sheet… You must note that host is providing resistor… Mass will also have to be measured for each device… To measure average power, you will now need three measurements… (if not using an automatic measuring system)
13. OTHER NOTABLE CHANGES FOR 2010-11 Wind Energy Challenge - Rule 9: Energy source… Has been changed to the LASKO 3733 fan, although equivalent fans will be allowed -Rule 12: NO MORE LAMPS A 10 Ohm Resistor will now be used in place of the lamp -Rule 16: Measuring power At the National Event, we will use Vernier Equipment and Logger Pro to measure average power. OTHER METHODS ARE ALLOWED. NOTE: For competition hosts, I strongly recommend using an automated method to measure power. Although last year’s standard measuring set-up of multi-meters works in a classroom, measurements can be inaccurate. This year, with 3 samples needed from the multi-meters, it will more difficult still
14. OTHER NOTABLE CHANGES FOR 2010-11 Wind Energy Challenge MESA USA Set-up For a PC or laptop: Logger Pro $189 + Diff Voltage Probe $39 + GO-LINK $61 = $289 By using the Logger Pro 30 day demo, you may be able to save money on the PC option. Demo is available through the Vernier webpage… http://www.vernier.com/downloads/lp3demo.html Texas Instrument Set-up For centers with TI calculators, data collection for the competition is very easy. Since most newer calculators come with the EasyData application (it’s a free download as well), one simply connects the EZ Link to the probe, and your set… TI set-up: EZ Link $59 + Diff Voltage Probe $39 = $98
15. OTHER NOTABLE CHANGES FOR 2010-11 Wind Energy Challenge Power equations: V=IxR & P=IxV then we can find power: P = V 2 /R (P= Watts , V= volts, I= amps, R=ohms)
