Lost Edgar Payne Masterpiece Painting Found in Dallas
1. Lost Edgar Payne Masterpiece Painting Found in Dallas
Startling Cleaning and Art Restoration
Edgar Payne is one of the best known, most expensive vintage early California
Impressionists bought and sold regularly. But you already know that probably, if
this article caught your eye. I love everything he did, from the bays of Venice and
Chioggia, Italy to the Alps to the East Coast, his western stuff and all over California.
Its all good!
He is so well known that is always amazes me when a major unknown painting is
“discovered” as happened this last week! Here’s a painting of “The Wetter Horn,
Switzerland” that was languishing unappreciated in Dallas, Texas.
Then, just today, Steven Stern, principle for the gallery California Paintings found a
limited edition copy of Stendahl Gallery’s publication on Edgar Payne in 1926 that
highlights this painting as plate #9!! What a find. The painting arrived at Fine Art
Conservation Laboratories for cleaning still in its original frame.
2. As you might guess by looking at the before painting conservation picture, the
painting was super discolored due to a thick discolored hard varnish and probably
nicotine and who-knows-what-else. As you will see in the short time lapse video of
the cleaning, it didn’t come off easy or like a “regular” varnish. Here’s the very
popular video that has been circulating all over the internet. Click on this link:

We recently worked on a very nice large Edgar Payne California Sierra scene that
sold through Bonham and Butterfields last Oct. 2012. It too had very discolored
varnish and was made gorgeous for the LA Art Show in Feb 2013. In fact, Fine Art
Conservation Laboratories has loved working on a huge number of the paintings by
Edgar Payne over the years.
One of the consternations of this new discovery is that recently a new definitive (or
maybe NOT so definitive now!) catalog and scholarly book on Edgar Payne came out
and, obviously, doesn’t include this important painting. Click here to see the book on
Amazon. How would you feel if you had a great painting by a well known artist and
it missed getting into a new book on the artist?!
