Album review: 'Ready To Fly' by Jamie Grace
In a world where former Disney princesses are going morally AWOL, and “Christian” pop stars
are egging people’s homes, Jamie Grace is a breath of fresh air and an inspiration to every
young person out there.
At just 22 she can boast of a Dove Award, a Billboard award nomination and, recently a
Grammy nomination.
Now she continues telling more of her God story on the new album "Ready to Fly."
With this sophomore effort, Grace has proved that she is here to stay.
On "Ready To Fly," Grace is reminiscent of Colbie Calliat or Taylor Swift with her musical
display of feelings and emotions. She is good at writing those feel-good, easy-on-the-ears
tunes. However, unlike Calliat or Swift, Grace’s stories are centered on Christ, Christian living
and worship.
Vocally, Jamie Grace has improved from the time we first heard her on her debut “One Song at
a Time.” Artistically, she has grown, yet stayed true to her style and sound which seem to set
her apart in the contemporary Christian music industry.
Grace gets her worship on as she opens the album appreciating God in the album’s first single,
"Beautiful Day.” While the album's first single "Beautiful Day" feels like she reapplied the

formula she used on her Toby Mac-assisted debut single “Hold Me," it is a song that brings
sunshine and I can't hate on that.
On "Just A Friend,” Grace sings about finding young love from the perspective of a young
female Christian. She then gets advice from big brother Manwell of Group 1 Crew who drops a
few lines of advice on the subject matter, and Grace takes the advice by ending the song
affirming she's fine with being just friends with this high school crush.

Grace opens herself up to uncertainty while trusting God with the unknown as she relives some
of her memories in “Little Old Me,” which is a confident and enjoyable tune. She further
expresses herself in a love song to God called "My First Love."
“Fighter," is an upbeat, infectious tune that encourages and motivates the listener. It taps into
Grace’s inner storyteller as she tells the stories of people (including herself) who overcome
obstacles and put their trust in God when facing life’s battles. The subject matter reminds me a
little of Mandisa's “Overcomer” or something on Laura Story’s latest.
Jamie Grace ups the tempo on pop-oriented "Do Life Big" and "Every Bit of Lovely." Both of
these songs will definitely get lots of airplay if they are released as singles.
"White Boots" is one song I just couldn't wrap my head around. It’s probably because I’m a
guy, but hey…. Musically, the song is lovely as Grace's sister Morgan Harper lends her voice.
Lyrically, I get the idea of walking down the aisle guilt-free, not having had sex before marriage.
However, I just find the thought of Jamie Grace wearing white boots and a white dress, while
walking down the aisle cheesy. Forgive my lack of countryness, but white boots? Seriously? Not
a favorite moment of mine on the album.
"Ready to Fly (Avery’s Song)," is a beautiful, sad song. The song is dedicated to a late 11- year
old fan of Jamie Grace called Avery who passed away after a tragic car accident in 2012.
"The Waiting" is AMAZING. It is a song to which a lot of people can easily relate. Co-written by
Natalie Grant the inspirational track, "The Waiting" is that an excerpt from the inner mind of an
average believer when waiting on God and learning how to trust His timing.
"Always You" is a fun, groovy and danceable, tune gives reverence and credit to God for all
things.
I liked "Ready To Fly," but I think it would have been much better if Grace got out of her comfort
zone a little more. Also, a more mature audience might not fully relate to the subject matter on
this album, but young people will eat it up because Grace does an excellent job telling her God
story to them.
