MU is advancing Missouri through undergraduate education in many ways. Today I will Focus on our enrollment; Introduce you to some remarkable students ; and Give you an example of the stellar faculty who teach Mizzou undergraduates.
Although our undergraduate enrollment has grown substantially: We have increased our ethnic and geographic diversity. We have increased the number of low-income students. We have a higher number of high ability students. Our six-year graduation rate is the highest in MU history and is much higher than the national average for public universities. Our new Commission on Student Success (co-chaired by Cathy Scroggs, Jim Spain and Ann Korschgen) is continuing to examine ways to help students succeed at Mizzou.
MU has invested in numerous programs that contribute to student success and add tremendous value to their undergraduate education. The best way to show the power of an MU undergraduate degree is by introducing you to several students who are engaged in unique experiences that enrich their academic programs and promote significant personal growth . These students: Strive for academic excellence in challenging courses with real-world applications Pursue activities that develop leadership and communication skills Seek community service experience Conduct meaningful research with faculty mentors Study and volunteer abroad
Social Work major Kam Phillips was one of only 60 students nationwide (and the only one from a Missouri institution) to receive a 2011 Truman Scholarship for her outstanding leadership and commitment to public service. Each scholarship provides up to $30,000 for graduate study. Jenna Marston is majoring in industrial engineering, earns top grades and plays shortstop on the Tiger softball team. For the third straight year, the team competed in the Women’s College World Series. International student and violinist Matheus Souza (pronounced ma-TAY-oos SOO-zuh) placed third in the string division of the annual Music Teachers National Association competition. Our School of Music has a strong record of producing many national collegiate champions. Journalism students Emily Spain and Blake Hanson won the 2011 Fox News Channel College Challenge. Besides appearing on Fox News with Assistant Professor Greeley Kyle, they won a $10,000 prize and a matching $10,000 grant for the J-School. Pre-med student Jimmy Cole researches thyroid disease in the lab of his faculty mentor, molecular microbiology and immunology Professor Helen Braley-Mullen. He is one of 51 Honors College Discovery Fellows who earn a $1,700 stipend while gaining research and scholarly experience early in their academic careers. Students with ACT scores of 33 or better are eligible for the program.
Undergraduate students benefit from MU’s nationally prominent scholars and scientists. For example, Curators Professor James Birchler, a cytogeneticist who studies the structure and function of cells, joined the ranks of Albert Einstein, Orville Wright and Thomas Edison when the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) elected him as a member this spring. Dr. Birchler teaches our General Genetics course for undergraduate students, in addition to teaching graduate-level classes. He also works with undergraduates in his lab. One of Dr. Birchler’s most popular lectures features him dressed as Gregor Mendel, the monk and scientist whose work is the foundation of modern genetics. Our biggest challenge is keeping faculty like Dr. Birchler at Mizzou. We need adequate resources and a campus infrastructure that supports their teaching and research endeavors . Note: Other NAS members at MU are Fred Hawthorne , Linda Randall and R. Michael Roberts . Jack Colwill is a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies.
