1. How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
During the construction of my ancillary tasks, the music video that I was creating was always
on my mind and I always thought about how the video is going to look and based my
ancillary tasks around it. The way I thought about it was that in the video the main
protagonist is screaming, so for the ancillary tasks I made sure to at least have one picture
of someone screaming, which I did do. I ended up having the front of the CD and the poster
includes the whole band screaming. The task was to create two separate things. One was a
poster advertising the album, and one was to create a digipak (CD). On the original front
cover of the CD, I made the cover white and had a tame picture of the main character on
the front along with again another tame picture on the back. I changed this in a later draft
to have a dark red background with the band screaming to match the video where there are
sepia tones of red in the video when the main character is angry or confused.
The link between the digipak and the poster is obvious. Both ancillary tasks include a dark
red background and the same image on the front which shows the album cover. Also the
band is wearing the same clothes in the digipak as in the poster to make the connection
even more clear. Creating a clear link between the two ancillary tasks will make the product
a lot more successful if it were to be sold as the target audience will recognise the CD from
the poster.
After making changes to my ancillary tasks, I think that they fit the conventions of the genre
we were aiming for. Our genre that we chose was rock, so to capture the image of a rock
music video, we went with darker scenes and red colours so that everything looks more
rock-ish.
In the marketing process, the music video would be one of, if not the main feature. A music
video is important to market out the band as the music video can be portrayed on many
different platforms including TV and online video sharing websites. Since a big part of the
world has an internet connection, putting a music video online would be a great way to
publicise and promote a video.
