2. History and Availability
• Development of the iPhone began in 2005
with Apple CEO Steve Jobs' direction that
Apple engineers investigate touchscreens.
• Jobs unveiled the iPhone to the public on
January 9, 2007 at the Macworld 2007
convention at the Moscone Center in San
Francisco.
3. Hardware
• The touchscreen on all models is a 9 cm
(3.5 in) liquid crystal display with scratch-
resistant glass.
• The capacitive touchscreen is designed for a
bare finger, or multiple fingers for multi-
touch sensing.
4. Audio and Output
• One of two speakers (left) and the
microphone (right) surround the dock
connector on the base of the original iPhone.
If a headset is plugged in, sound is played
through it instead.
• On the bottom of the iPhone there is a
speaker to the left of the dock connector and
a microphone to the right.
5. Liquid Contact Indicators
• The iPhone is equipped with liquid contact
indicators which change from white to red in
color when they come in contact with water.
These suggest whether water damage has
affected the device or not.

you’ll see on iPhone 4S is everything.

thousands more in just about any category — many

15. Call it better, faster and
even more worldly.
iPhone 4S is the first phone
to intelligently switch between
two antennas to transmit and receive,
so call quality is better. It also doubles
the maximum HSDPA data speeds to
14.4 Mbps. Which means faster
connections, faster loading and
reloading, and faster downloads.
Maximum Data Download Speeds
(HSDPA)
iPhone 4S 14.4 Mbps
iPhone 4 7.2 Mbps
16. iOS Jailbreaking
• iOS jailbreaking, or simply jailbreaking, is the process
of removing the limitations imposed by Apple on
devices running the iOS operating system through
use of custom kernels.
• Jailbreaking allows users to gain root access to the
operating system, allowing iOS users to download
additional applications, extensions, and themes that
are unavailable through the official Apple App Store.
17. • A tethered jailbreak requires that the device be
connected to a computer each time it needs to
be booted; an untethered jailbreak allows the
device to be powered without computer
assistance.
• Under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act,
jailbreaking iPhones is legal in the United States,
although Apple has announced that the practice
"can violate the warranty".
18. Reasons for Jailbreaking
• One of the main reasons for jailbreaking is to expand
the feature set limited by Apple and its App Store.
• Since software programs available through Cydia are
not required to adhere to App Store guidelines, many
of them are not typical self-contained apps but
instead are extensions and customizations for iOS
and other apps.
