Cloud platforms are increasingly being used for hosting a broad diversity of services from traditional e-commerce applications to interactive web-based IDEs. However, we observe that the proliferation of offers by cloud providers raises several challenges. Developers will not only have to deploy applications for a speci?c cloud, but will also have to consider migrating services from one cloud to another, and to manage distributed applications spanning multiple clouds. In this paper, we present our federated multi-cloud PaaS infrastructure for addressing these challenges. This infrastructure is based on three foundations: i) an open service model used to design and implement both our multi- cloud PaaS and the SaaS applications running on top of it, ii) a con?gurable architecture of the federated PaaS, and iii) some infrastructure services for managing both our multi- cloud PaaS and the SaaS applications. We then show how this multi-cloud PaaS can be deployed on top of thirteen existing IaaS/PaaS. We ?nally report on three distributed SaaS applications developed with and deployed on our federated multi-cloud PaaS infrastructure.

Choosing a PaaS for the Enterprise

How many times have you had a client say to you "But my kid brother says we should really use CMS X", "Our IT guy says Drupal isn't 'Enterprise'" or "We're moving from CMS Y and we hate it, why should we go with CMS X?" This talk will be a comparison of various CMS platforms across PHP, ASP.NET and JAVA (closed source, open source, free and pay) to better enable you to make informed decisions for yourself and your customers. This session won't be overly technical but it will be focused for users who understand basic CMS concepts. I highly recommend it for anybody who will be involved in the CMS decision making or sales process for a CMS based project. I have a small confession to make, Drupal was the first CMS I used and interestingly enough it gave me a very warped view of the landscape. When the time came for me to use other CMSs, I was shocked at the features (or lack of) that some offered. Fast forward to a few years later, I had a client come to me and ask which CMS I would use for their large project. After about 10 seconds deliberation I said Drupal, it's been my go-to for over three years now -- of course Drupal would work for what they wanted. Well, it turned out that Drupal couldn't offer exactly what the client actually needed so it was time to put on the research cap and really take a look at what's out there. To make a long story short I fell for the classic "When all you have is a hammer..." when it turns out for some parts of the project there were better tools (and for some parts, Drupal was the still right CMS). Join me as I walk you through the decision making proces that we followed, the CMSs we reviewed, their strengths, weakness and overall questions that you just know the client is going to ask. Disclamer: This won't be a Drupal, Drupal, rah-rah-rah (biased) talk. I'll cover: Why choose one CMS over another? Strengths and weaknesses of the CMSs. Comparison projects between two CMSs to show the time/cost difference. Saas CMS vs hosting your own. The dreaded "Enterprise" word How does Drupal 6/7 stack up? What I won't cover: Language vs Language Hosting architectures (aside from SaaS)

Cloud Computing is rapidly becoming popular amongst enterprises that realize the benefits of shared infrastructure, lowered costs and minimal management overheads. But not all organizations and applications may benefit from a cloud computing platform. A legacy application ported in a native fashion to a cloud computing platform may not utilize any of the platform’s USPs at all. More importantly, wrong choice of platform can be disastrous. Deciding the optimal cloud vendor or platform for your requirements is a complex task. Consider the plethora of choices available in the world of cloud computing: * Public Cloud or Private Cloud or Hybrid Cloud * Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS): Amazon AWS, Rackspace Cloud, GoGrid, Terremark, * Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS): Google AppEngine, Microsoft Azure, Heroku * Software-as-a-Service (SaaS): Salesforce, Netsuite, Google Apps, saas.com * Should you use IaaS, PaaS or SaaS for your application? * Which cloud database fits your application? SimpleDB, SQL, RDS, Hadoop? We will discuss the various business and technology factors to consider, while choosing a cloud vendor. We will explore the pros and cons of various cloud vendors and their offerings. Lastly, we will also discuss some real-life use-cases of applications and servers being migrated to cloud computing and what factors led to selection of a particular cloud vendor. Takeaways from the session This talk would serve as an introduction to a wide variety of cloud computing platforms. The audience would be able to answer questions like: “What options are available for cloud computing?”, “What are their pros and cons?”, “Should I consider migrating my application or server to the cloud?”, “Should I use IaaS, PaaS or SaaS?”, “Which is the best cloud vendor for my use-case?”
