  1. When this topic was assigned to our group, we thought to request Sir to change this topic and provide any, other than this. Because we were thinking how can we differentiate between two latest versions of the same operating system? Both are providing speechless computing. But yesterday, when we were finishing our ppt, we realised that we could not have this much preparation if we would have assigned any other topic than this. When we first see the topic a question may arise in your mind that what’s the need of differentiating these two versions? Adopt any one, start using.Yes. It can be good answer for anyone but other than you but ,since we are the active resident of this planet, we have aim to enter into the world of programming and most importantly we’re the student of CSE, we must know the operating system at which we are working. In todays scenario of computing, the most usable operating system for general computing purposes is windows. We all have a crystal clear differences between win 7 & win 8 as our one of the previous group has already presented a presentation over it, but still, While taking issue with there statements, we are here to let you know the differences b/w these o.s. with new, different and pristine features with interesting facts. While we were preparing our presentation, in addition to the internet browsing regarding the topic and reading books on windows 8, we were using these two operating systems to check the validity of various features. We almost covered all the noticeable differences between win7 & win 8.So we hope at the end of this you won’t find yourself stuck in differentiating these two versions. So before going any further to the topic let us have small Glimpse of Windows 8 features.
  2. I know you all are aware of this trademark video of windows 8.it was including almost all the graphical point of features which we’ll be covering. Before going to differentiate between these two versions let us have a short focus over evolution of windows.Microsoft introduced an operating environment named Windows on November 20, 1985 just one year after apple’s OS.So you can imagine this battle of more market share has started 38 years before. So Windows 1.0 was the first version.Thereafter, Windows 2.0 came in 1987 which was even more popular than win 1.0.Then came win 3.0,featured with memory management. In 1995 concept of windows 9x came which comprises of win 95,win 98 & Win ME.As the time was going on evolution in the technology was taking place. The most popular versions in the next were Win xp, windows 7 & win 8 sorting some issues in previous one.
  3. Let us have a look at the latest break through of Microsoft that is nothing but windows Blue.It was released on oct 26,2012,Proprietary commercial soft licenced. The kernel is Hybrid which falls under NT kernel family. You can have updates through windows update method similar to win 7.It is preceded by win 7 and supports both IA-32,x64 and ARM architectures.
  4. Windows 8 is available in four editions: one simply named Windows 8 is intended for mainstream consumers. Windows 8 Pro contains additional features aimed towards power users and professional environments. Windows 8 Enterprise contains additional features aimed towards business environments, and is only available through volume licensing. Windows RT is only available as pre-loaded software on new ARM-based devices built specifically for the OS
  5. Now So here is what is required as a minimum to install this new windows versions at the hardware point of view. From the table we can conclude that The minimum criteria for the processor is that it should be 3rd gen & 8th generation x86 based architecture with 1 Ghz clock rate. The memory boundation is 1 GB and 2GB for 32 & 64 bit edition respectively.Graphics device should be DirectX 9 with WDDM 1.0 or higher.Display screen should be of atleast 1024*768 pixels.inputinstrustions can be taken basically from Keyboard & Mouse while the hard disk space should be not less than 16 GB and 20GB for 32 & 64 bit edition respectively.
  6. Here is collectively the minimum requirements of the two o.s. on hardware point of view.According to the Microsoft, from the given table we can say that the minimum requirement for the tabulated component is same for both whether it is processor, graphics ,RAM or hard drive.Tillnow, whatever we have discussed was all about the hardware requirements of these two windows versions. There are some methods & techniques that windows operating system uses to deal with plenty of problems inside. These techniques are so unique that we can not differentiate b/w these two o.s. on the basis of them as both win 7 & win 8 uses in the same way.But still if we are dealing with windows o.s.,we must know about them.
  7. So here is the first of them which is nothing but the scheduling algorithms used by both win 7 & win 8.Multi-level feedback queue implementation is used by the both o.s. for various scheduling.so processes with higher priority have first access to CPU time.Further, At the base level queue, the processes circulate in round robin fashion until they complete and leave the system.“No”The multiple queues involved are called priority queues.so the process priority decreases as it uses more cpu time
  8. The strategies that both of this windows operating system uses for dealing with deadlock is The Ostrich Algorithm i.e. “Pretend there is no problem”. Not only windows, the linuxo.s. also uses the same for handling deadlock.Deadlock detection was unavailable before Windows xp.Win 7 & win 8 both uses Driver verifier & deadlock kernel debugger extension for managing deadlock.Driver verifier looks for potential deadlocks involving spin locks and mutex. When violation in deadlock detection occur it will issue a bug check that result in investigation of what has exactly occurred by deadlock kernel debugger extension.
  9. Metro….Why is it called Metro-style? It is because it brings all your apps and settings in one place. You can access everything from your emails, RSS feeds, photos, documents, to settings in Control Panel etc. from the user interface with a single tap and without navigating to different sections.
  10. The earlier version of win i.e. win7 was also supporting this multiple monitor feature but in windows 8 this feature has been improved. While using this attributes we can control the multiple screens of same desktop as it is done in Linux operating systems. We can show start menu on one and different desktop background on the other at the same time.
  11. Windows 8 has new way of searching Apps, files or contacts. In previous version of this windows ,searching was available through start menu and file explorer whereas in win 8 this can be achieved through metro style start screen.Just start typing and you will have your apps.
  12. Earlier it was not possible to store large amount of data on servers but cloud computing have made it possible.Windows 7 is not representing cloud based services but Windows 8 does as it is an inbuilt feature.
  13. Ituses a public-key infrastructure to verify the integrity of the operating system and prevent unauthorized programs such as bootkits from infecting the device.Secure boot ensures the operating system being booted hasn't been corrupted by verifying that the kernel is the one that was signed with a Microsoft certificate. Trusted boot calls for launching anti-malware before the operating system itself boots in order to thwart malware that might try to disable it.
  14. Windows 8 integrates an inbuilt antivirus program in its Kernel. It will prevent viruses or other online threats from intruding into your system via the internet or infected USB devices. So if you plug in an infected USB device in the drive or your Windows 8 computer, it will simply not boot telling you that the device is infected and needs to be removed immediately. It does as a built-in security which is still a dream in Windows 7 and previous OS versions.
  15. There is one more miracle that microsoft has done in this windows Blue, that is nothing but system recovery…Once your system got corrupted it will provide you two options:refresh & resetRefresh reinstalls Windows 8 but preserves personal settings and personal data. It does this by saving the settings and data on a separate partition in the hard drive, installing a fresh copy of the operating system then restoring the data and settings. Traditional Windows apps, however, have to be manually reinstalled. Reset wipes away the operating system, settings, data and applications and reinstalls a factory-fresh copy of Windows 8. It's as if the machine is fresh out of the box.
  16. Resolution conflict box is an added feature in addition to the improvement amended in copy confirmation dialog box
  17. Through data collected from Windows 7 users, it was found that 85% of users only open up the task manager to kill non-responsive applications and to monitor processes. As such, the new task manager in Windows 8 features a simplified layout that only lists currently running applications. The new task manager doesn’t prompt users to confirm when ending a task and, as such, tasks can be canceled by a single click.things such as process names and their usage have been simplified to make it easier to monitor the performance of your computer
  18. Microsoft has added metered internet connection control in win 8 to manage the amount of data you used on mobile broadband or wifi network.Internet services provider charges by amount of data used .when you exceed the limit of maximum data usage,it will charge for the same also.Windows 7 doesn’t have this feature. In win 7 we could create an ad-hoc network in any encryptions like WEP,WPA or WPA2.These networks can be used for transferring data,or connecting games. But in win 8 we don’t have any given facility to create these networks but still we could connect to any pre existing connections of these types.
  19. On previous Windows versions, we are informed about updates through a system tray icon and notification balloons. On Windows 8, these update notifications will no longer appear on the desktop. All Windows-Update-related messages will be shown on the login and lock screens, so you might not even see them if you automatically log into your PC.
  20. Windows Media Center won’t be included by default in any version of Windows 8, since it’s used by so few people. Still the Media Center will be available as a paid add-on to Windows 8 Pro.There is no place for Recent Documents menu in the new Start screen. So use Search in Charms bar to find any documents on your Windows 8 PC.There is no place for Recent Documents menu in the new Start screen. So use Search in Charms bar to find any documents on your Windows 8 PC.
  21. The Backup and Restore feature that allows users to create system and files backups and restore from them has been replaced by a new feature called File History. Still this new option will provide only file-based backup, since system backup is underused in currant Windows versions.
  22. Internet Explorer 10 is included as both a desktop program and a touch-optimized app, and includes increased support for HTML5, CSS3, and hardware acceleration. The Internet Explorer app does not support plugins or ActiveX components, but includes a version of Adobe Flash Player that is optimized for touch and low power usagean early version Internet Explorer 11 can be installed by simple Windows Blue update.
  23. The traditional Blue Screen of Death (BSoD) was replaced by a new Bluescreen of death in improved way. The Blue Screen of Death has been updated with a simpler and modern design with less technical information displayed so that a common computer user can understand what has been displayed by this.
  24. ReFS(Resilient File System) is a more reliable and efficient file system that is less prone to crashing and errors. However, when errors do occur, ReFS is designed to detect and repair issues without causing any file corruption.
  25. Windows 8 integrates a built-in USB 3.0 support for a wide range of latest hardware and networking devices such as hubs and ports etc. The OS features a brand new, improved software stack for USB 3.0 support. It, besides, still features the old USB software stacks to support old USB devices. Individual users or businesses can now easily create virtual USB drives and transfer data 10 times faster than the earlier USB 2.0 functionality. Such an advanced USB device compatibility and data transfer speed are absent from Windows 7.
  26. Another difference b/w win 7 & win 8 is that win 7 could only burn an ISO image to a DVD but Win 8 actually betters this by offering you the option to mount the image too.You need not rely on any third party software for mounting. In win 7 you didn't have the option to make virtual drives to use the ISO image’s content but Win 8 allows you to create a virtual drive to mount the ISO images so that you can easily use it just like a normal DVD.
  27. New features and functionality in Windows 8 include a faster startup through UEFI integration and the new "Hybrid Boot" mode. The secret beside this is that it this UEFI which stands for UEFIUnified Extensible Firmware Interface ,hibernates the Windows kernel instead of shutting down as in previous versions,on giving the command for shutdown to speed up the subsequent boot. Here is a bar graph showing the faster startup of win 8.A similar improvement is seen when measuring shutdown time. Windows 8 took 8 seconds versus the 12 seconds in windows 7
  28. Though a lot has already been said about the next gen of windows, i.e. windows 8Let me add little more on my ownWindows 8 ,is just not the next version of windows, it’s a complete new way of thinking about your pcAs windows8 is windows reimagined and what I tell you more about what that means for users like uswin8 is designed to deliver no compromise experience, it brings together the potential of a tablet with the power of a pcwin8 is going to give customers the power, the mobility and the familiarity to effortlessly move b\w not only what they want to do but what they need to do and the flexibility of win makes it possible. that’s enough to talk let’s us move to next episode of the presentation
  29. In the process of moving from windows 7 to win 8 certain features have been improved, certain added & some have been scrapped,But there is one more category, of those features that have been improved to an extent that they can’t be put into improved features category. Now lets take a look on some of the features of all these categoriesSoc & Arm SupportWindows 8 will run on both X86 & ARMIt integrates a built-in support for System on Chip structural designs and Advanced RISC Machinebased devices from Intel, AMD, NVIDIA, Texas Instruments, and Qualcomm. And this all means that the widest possible range of pc’s and tablets are available across architectures giving customers more choice & more flexibiltyThe version of Windows 8 used on ARM-based devices is actually referred to as Windows RT - this stands for runtime. You can't buy this separately, but only with a device. The main merit of this architecture is that it consumes less power than x86 chips, extending battery life.
  30. It is an added feature to windows 8Previous versions of Windows let you sign in assoon as you turned on your computer. Windows8, by contrast, makes you unlock a screenbefore moving to the sign in page, where youtype in your name and password. Here is a lock screen of windows 8 In the lower left corner of the screen you can quickly see the information that matters to uYour new emails, appointments, & other notificationsyou need not unlock the device & open up each prog to see there are new things you need to take care of
  31. You can personalize your windows 8 so that is really ur own unique experience even in how u unlock ur device.U can use picture password that is a new way of logging in which works by touch gestures; this is known as a picture password login. The picture password is easy to set up through the control panel and allows users to assign any image to the login screen. The next step is to create three gestures on the image and this acts as the password to log in to your computer.
  32. In windows 8You can quickly get to the important things that you need to do with one swipe of finger or one move of mouse-pointer.All you do is to swipe in from the right edge to reveal charms.Charms are gonna connect ur app to other app they are gonna connect you to ur friends & connect ur apps to devicescharms provide access to key windows features & you saw they are just one quick gesture or click away.
  33. The Aero Glass theme, the graphical centerpiece of Windows Vista and Windows 7, has been completely removed from Windows 8 in favor of a Metro-style theme. The reason behind this removal was that it was less popular and used among windows user. The metro style themes just works wonderful.
  34. Together with Aero theme, Microsoft abandons Flip 3D windows switching (Win Key + Tab). This wasn’t actually the popular feature among Windows users, as it needed to press & hold a pair of keys, still it looked cool and stylish. In Windows 8, Flip 3D is replaced with a Modern UI app switcher, accessible by moving mouse up from the bottom-left corner or down from the upper-left corner. This cannot be used for desktop apps
  35. In Windows 8 users can display two applications at the same time, one occupying about three-quarters of the screen on either the left or right, the other app occupying the rest. With a touch screen, sliding the bar separating the two apps can make them larger or smaller. Both apps work. Snap is handy if someone is working on a document, for example, and wants to draw information from a spreadsheet at the same time. But it is limited to just two apps being displayed at a time. This differs from Windows 7 where apps can occupy as many windows as the user cares to open. Those windows can be adjusted to the exact size the user wants. One more thing , this snapping doesn’t work on resolution less than 1366X768
  36. This very cool but unpopular feature of win7 has been left out of windows 8.There will not be any desktop gadget like cpu meter, clock, calendar, rss feeds, picture puzzle, slide show, weather etc.But some of these features are available in form of metro style apps in win8.
  37. This is something very new to windowswindows store is one stop location of all the metro style apps that are the power of new experience in windows 8 & it does all start here in windows store it is the source for free apps, trial apps & apps you can purchaseapps are available for various devices & settings.Windows offers developer kit to the developers to make apps for this Windows store. This all is to handle the monopoly of Google play store that offers millions of apps forAndroidOn the other hand win 7 os ismissings all these features.
  38. Now moving to the last part of the presentation.every software has certain defects, errors or complications. So what's the big deal if the Microsoft product has some limitations. Now we will be looking certain things that one hates or at least wish to avoid on windows 8.First one is to avoid the heart & soul of windows 8 the very start screen many times.Like when you are using ur desktop programs,There are certain provisions to do so but No matter how many Start screen–avoiding tactics youmay employ, you’ll still find yourself tossed back ontothe Start screen when you do any of the following things:✓ Adding user accounts. ✓ Playing a music file or view a photo. ✓ Troubleshooting –refresh or reset ur pcIn short, be prepared for the occasional unavoidable journey to the start screen
  39. On a touchscreen tablet, it’s enticing to stay on theStart screen with its finger-sized tiles and easy-to touchicons. But staying nestled within the Start screen’s world ofapps can be more difficult than it appears. No matterhow hard you try to avoid the desktop and its pinsizedcontrols, you’ll find yourself dragged therewhen you do any of the following things from theStart screen:✓ Click the Desktop tile. ✓ Browse files. ✓ Manage a user account. You can create newaccounts from the Start screen, but to delete orchange an existing account, you need the desktop’sControl Panel.✓ Watch Flash videos. ✓ Manage gadgetry. ✓ Manage files. In short, the Start screen works well for most simplecomputing tasks. But when it comes to fine-tuningyour computer’s settings, performing maintenancework, or even browsing files, you’ll find yourselfreturning to the desktop.
  40. Can’t Copy Music to iPodYou won’t find the word iPod mentioned in theWindows 8 menus, help screens, or even in the Helpareas of Microsoft’s website. That’s becauseMicrosoft’s competitor, Apple, makes the tremendouslypopular iPodSo will You face two hurdles:✓ Windows Media Player won’t recognize youriPod✓ When you plug in your iPod, Windows mightrecognize the slick gadget as a portable harddrive. It may even let you copy songs to it. Butyour iPod won’t be able to find or play them. The easiest solution is to download and install iTunessoftware from Apple’s website (www.apple.com/itunes). Because iTunes and Media Player willbicker over which program can play your files, you’llprobably end up choosing iTunes.
  41. The power-conscious Windows 8 normally blanksyour screen when you haven’t touched a key for a few minutes. And, when you belatedly press a key tobring the screen back to life, you’re faced with thelock screen. To move past the lock screen, you need to type yourpassword to sign back in to your account. That sometimes seems an extra work.If you don’t ever want to see the lock screen, use a single user account without a password. That defeats all the security offered by the useraccount system, but it’s more convenient if you are the only user of ur device.
  42. The Taskbar Keeps DisappearingIn win8 almost all applications run on the full screen that hides the taskbar usually present at the bottom of the Desktop. That sometimes feel very unusual.
  43. In windows if you are facing a problem keeping Track of Open WindowsYou actually don’t have to keep track of all those open windows.Windows 8 does it for you with a secret keycombination: Hold the Alt key and press the Tab key,and a little bar appears, displaying the icons for allyour open windows.
  44. Windows 8 gets really picky about who gets to dowhat on your computer. The computer’s owner gets the Administrator account. And the administratorusually gives everybody else a Standard account. What does that mean? Well, only the administratorcan do the following things on the computer:✓ Install programs ✓ Create or change accounts for other people.✓ Install some hardware, such as digital camerasand MP3 players.✓ Perform actions affecting other people on the PC.People with Standard accounts, by nature, are limitedto fairly basic activities. They can do these things:✓ Run previously installed programs.✓ Change their account’s picture and password. If Windows says only an administrator may do somethingon your PC, you have two choices: Find anadministrator to type his or her password and authorizethe action; or convince an administrator toupgrade your account to an Administrator account
  45. Microsoft says that 4 million users upgraded to Windows 8 over the weekend after its release. 40 million licenses of Windows 8 were sold in the first monthsurpassing the pace of Windows 7.Although this rate later decreases.Microsoft was keen to make windows as widely available as possible especially on cheaper Windows 8 tablets to compete with Ipads and androids tablets.Besides all the differences that we talked, there is one last but not least difference b/w these two Microsoft product on the developer point of view that isWe can develop apps for win 8 but win 7 does not have this facility. This was done by Microsoft to be in the race with Androids developers. So with the introduction of this windows blue version, Microsoft has left no one whether Tablets firms, Androids or apple’s product.“It is quite a human tendency that if anyone start making something different then people first start laughing but later start competing.”Microsoft too suffered a no.(s) of critics & comments with the launch of this windows 8.In November 2012, a complaint was filed with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, alleging that Microsoft is misleading consumers by not including any label that it is only an upgrade version that cannot be installed without an existing version of Windows present unlike previous versions. It was also said that one of the biggest success of Microsoft’s long & storied existence was the launching & sales volumes of win 7.But this comment were shattered with the release of win 8.
