5 million customers (in 2.4 million households)
Population Density – 67 per km2 (78,772 km2) – Scotland
– 401 per km2 (130,395 km2) – England (23)
1830 wastewater treatment works (including 1206 septic tanks)
2032 wastewater pumping stations
284 water treatment works
47,000 kilometres of water pipes
50,000 kilometres of sewer pipes
Although, we are the 4 th largest utility in the uk in terms of turn over. With low population densities outside of the central belt and east coast, we have significantly more assets then other water utilities in the uk. With very low population densities, outside of the central belt and east coast, we have significantly more assets then other water utility in the uk. We need to deal with numerous small remote communities in the highlands and islands. And, It’s interesting to note that about 80% of the population is serviced by around 23 water treatment works. So the majority of the population is served by a small number of large works and the minority a large number of small works. Assets in remote areas can at best take several hours to get to, and in the highlands and islands that can be a two day round trip. So, we need to ensure our assets are trouble free and reliable. And waste water pumping stations are a significant part of our asset base, and can be a significant draw on resources and time.
