Welcome to my presentation. My name is Victor Gonzalez and I am currently working at the International School of Bremen. I teach Spanish and ICT. I have given this presentation at AGIS (Association of German International Schools) last year in Hannover, also at the International School of Bremen and at the Laie International School in Barcelona. and last mont at the ECIS (European Council of International Schools)
The aim of this presentation is to give online tools to the language teacher in order to enrich his classes. The concepts I am going to use are very simple and are based on blended animated teaching and learning.
Blended learning or B learning. Blended Learning is a blending of different interactive learning environments. It’s a combinatiomn of face-to-face instruction with computer-mediated instruction.
The tools I have chosen are considered the best and most widely used by teachers around the world. They are,
1) User friendly.
2) Educationally rich
3) Free tools.
At the end of the presentation I am going to give you show you where the hand outs are, my blog and the website I have used to prepare the presentation.
We have three theoretical elearning or blended learning concepts:
Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants and New Millenium Learners.
Digital Natives; Our students are native speakers of digital knowledge. Digital technologies already existed when they were born and have grown up with digital technology. They were born digital.
Digital Immigrants: We have to adapt to technologies.
Both terms are not black and white. We have to handle the concepts with great care. In recent studies Digital Natives are not technically homogeneous. There are those students who are definitely born digital but you can also find students who still struggle with the computer. That is a difficulty for us.
The Third concept is New Millennium Learners or Creative Millennials. They are thought to be adept with computers, creative with technology and, above all, highly skilled at multitasking.
From static personal web pages to dynamically generated blogs and social networking profiles, such as Myspace and Facebook. Web 2.0 means sharing, creating, an architecture of participation. There is criticism in the web 2.0: Andrew Keen for example has stated that this user generated content leads to mediocrity because anybody can publish anything. Towards web 3.0: Semantic web solutions http://vimeo.com/718532
Galaxy of user generated content.

A class blog: the teacher posts the homework, exercises, videos of himself or even podcasts for the students and the parents
A creative blog: The students have to create a story with pictures, videos, etc. Or they can talk about a picture of a painting the teacher has posted. It can be individual or collective.
A journaling blog: It can be written by one student or a group of students.
The e-learning are publicly available for academic use, within and outside the University of British Columbia. Periodically, Arts IS releases new tools to this site for educational purposes. We can find tools like Vocabulary memorization platform, language pronunciation tool, and the Timeline tool that allows an instructor to construct an interactive timeline with audio and visual effects.
MemoryLifter is a free virtual flashcard system scientifically based on the Leitner card box algorithm with controlled repetition and timed spacing. It incorporates multimedia elements like images, audio, and video. And applies to all knowledge areas (Spanish, capital cities or famous paintings). You can create your own Learning Module.
The students choose their avatars. It is higly controlled and it is used for educational purposes. You can create very small and private communities.
EPals is the social network optimized for K-12 learning. Over half a million classrooms in 200 countries and territories use epals. You can browse by country, by category, difficulty, subject, etc, etc. As a teacher you can see flag marks next to student monitored mail messages.
tests and surveys
You can broadcast anything you want online with a global audience.
Free video editors on the net.
Flash your media by creating slideshows, videoshows or personal jukeboxes!
Pictures and texts come alife. For teachers you can have unlimited videos. See an example.
With Ubroadcast you can tak live about any topic, conduct interviews and create your own radio program.
Podcasting: You just need to download a free multilingual audio editor and then create a podcast. A podcast is an audio digital file you can post in a blog and then download it as an MP3 file any time you want to listen to it. Many radio stations use podcasts, individuals, companies and of course also teachers. You can have an audio book, a short story, sporting event commentariers, class lectures, cooking recipes and an original radio program where the students can talk about their favourite music, films, actors, their own experiences or create their own original stories.
If you want the student to listen to the text he has written on the computer. It can be a fun way of working with bits and pieces of writing in class. The resultant computerized voice is getting better and better.
36 million users and 1,6 social networks, Ning, unlike more famous social networks like Facebook or MySpace, a Ning can be walled off, so that only members of a particular community have access to that community. This means that it is safe post pictures, texts and audio commentaries because only your community will be able to watch, read and listen what the others are saying.
With wiki you can create collaboratibe websites. It-s like a small tiny wikipedia for your students. They can post their comments, write their stories or post their podcasts, so it constantly changes the website landscape.Private wiki servers require user authentication to edit pages, and sometimes even to read them. So a class can have a wiki page of any topic. The possibilities are endless.
This tool, Courselab, was voted the best for elearning in 2008. It creates interactive elearning content such as quizzes or online modules for your students. All for free.
Wordle is a toy for generating “word clouds” from text that you provide. The clouds give greater prominence to words that appear more frequently in the source text. You can tweak your clouds with different fonts, layouts, and color schemes. The images you create with Wordle are yours to use however you like. You can print them out, or save them to the Wordle gallery to share with your class. So if you choose a topic with your students in class you can generate as many words as your students like and put them together.
Teachers create webquests so that learners complete them as cooperative groups. Each learner within a group can be given a "role," or specific area to research. WebQuests may take the form of role-playing scenarios, where students take on the personas of professional researchers or historical figures.
Why technology: 1) Teaching and learning is more attractive, innovative and effective. 2) Students boost their self confidence when learning activities are challenging and authentic. 3) Teachers have to be convinced of the value of technologies. Static textbook lessons can turn into attractive multisensorial learning objects. 4) Technologies provide access to worldwide information resources. As a teracher you are bringing the world into the classroom 5) Technologiesbring constant updating knowledge in a constant updating society. It s a revolution we are all immersed.
