5. И блъска се един въпрос в ума:
защо реките, станат ли големи,
напускат мълком своята земя,
понесли жал по родни Черноземи?
One problem gives my mind no peace:
Why do the rivers, bigger getting,
Their land of birth in silence leave,
Their native black earth soil regretting?

7. Защо не си останат вечно ТУК,
при извора - една сълзичка бяла,
откърмила ги под листо на бук
и песен, и живот на всяка дала?
Why do they not forever stay
Here at the source, whose pure tears reared them
Beneath these beeches in deep shade,
Gave life to them, with music cheered them?

9. При тоя врьх, сред тези планини
дали за песните им тясно стана,
че търсят непознати ширини
отвъд дърветата, отвъд балкана?
Or was it that these hills became
Too cramped a place for songs they mastered
And so they sought the open plain
Beyond the trees and mountain passes?

13. И колкото все повече растат,
от своя извор се отдалечават.
Защо е тъй? Стоя на кръстопът,
и пак жестокия въпрос задавам.
The more the rivers grow in size
The further from their source they wander.
Why so? This cruel problem I
Here standing at the crossroads ponder.

15. Но върна ли се в къщи мълчешком
при майка си, стоя с тъга неясна,
защото аз напуснах своя дом
като реките също, щом пораснах.
But when back to my childhood home
I go, I sense a muted sadness
For I too left this place to roam
Like rivers, when I grew to manhood.
