rubble of her house following an Israeli
airstrike. Hamas announced 27 July it would
observe its own 24-hour lull in fighting,
hours after rejecting a 24-hour humanitarian
truce proposed by Israel. But violence
resumed, and the extent of the damage of
nearly three weeks of Israeli air and artillery
strikes in Gaza was thrown into sharp relief.

Tokyo will host the 2020 Summer Olympics. As the city is preparing for the games, disaster prevention measures are taken, after experts predicted a 70 percent chance that
the Tokyo area would be hit by a M7 earthquake within 30 years. Heavy rains in summertime due to typhoons and concentrated rainfalls are also a concern that have
already caused numerous floods in central Tokyo. The city is building massive underground regulating reservoirs that protect the megalopolis from flooding and the High Tide
Management Center protects the waterfront from tsunamis and high tide. Among measures to prevent flooding, the city has built a system of massive underground tunnels
acting as regulating reservoirs. It took 20 years to build the Kanda River Underground Regulating Reservoir Under Loop Road 7. The 4.5 kilometers long, 12.5 meters wide
and 40 meters deep tunnel can store up to 540,000 cubic meters of water from the Kanda river when it reaches flooding levels. EPA/FRANCK ROBICHON
