It may be very difficult to find the “vision” and the “managerial” pieces in one person. We should consider splitting this job into two. We have to be willing to let the experiment evolve on its own—part of the issue with social technology is that it is unpredictable. This means we have to take a chance. The more we can make our experiment “public”—meaning not isolated behind a security firewall, the more we can take advantage of online as a PR tool.We have an opportunity to leverage this hire/project into a large funding stream—there is arguably more money available for education innovation that any other technology arena .If we don’t open this position and seek take more radical approaches, we will continue to have a splintered internal population (IT on one side, experimenters on the other).We have tremendous internal capacity to support a variety of development initiatives (see PIIM, PETLab, Institute of Play, Center for Creative Mobility, Center for Transformative Media). We need to use these resources, or we will loose them.
