Vincent T. LaManna’s  Resume/Portfolio Medical Projects Details:   2 main housing parts designed for Structural Foam, all simple open and shut tooling with no side draws etc. Carousel carriers (pucks) designed as a multi part ABS assembly ultrasonically assembled with moveable anchor/drive pin which couples to the belt lugs below the deck. Bulky under deck harnessing replaced with simple Printed Circuit Bds which held all “down plugable” connectors and sensors. Barcode readers were mounted below deck and utilized a fold mirror for reading of tubes and tray. (Project Management, Precision machined , Sheetmetal, Printed Circuit Bds, Plastic Molded Parts, Drives, Optics) J&J Blood Analyzer (Vitros 5,1) Sample Handler Module (SAHA) Scope : Design new Sample Handler Unit for the Vitros 5,1 product line. Needed to work with existing Test Tube Carousel, hold 15 plus 1 STAT position, register Carousel accurately in 3 positions without spilling/splashing, read Barcode on Tubes and Carousel in 2 positions, spill containment/easy clean-up, stand alone, field serviceable/replaceable module, FDA requirements. Results :  “Vince designed and developed a Sample Processing Center for a clinical blood analyzer, a significant subsystem in an FDA-approved product that Johnson & Johnson released in 2005. His work was very thorough and he did early creative concept development, he developed the entire design database for production drawings and specifications, and he was involved in verification and validation efforts in support of commercialization and FDA approval. His comprehensive approach to the design challenge resulted in a Sample Processing Center that is very well received by customers, and has been in production since 2005, with no manufacturing problems. The design history file he helped create, has been audited by the FDA and they actually liked it. Vince was able to work very well with Process Engineers, Manufacturing Engineers, CAD designers and Design Engineers to deliver a successful design to commercialization, within tight schedule and budget constraints. Vincent T. LaManna’s  Resume/Portfolio Medical Projects Details:   With the requirement of having the parts made through the Silicone Rubber mold process, it was my goal to design each part for as simple of tooling as possible, i.e.. No side draws, inserts, hand pickouts etc. Of the over 20 separate plastic parts required to make the complete assembly, there was only (1) part that needed to have a side draw in the tooling, that was for the screw holes for mounting the friction hinges. The friction hinge was a double action with (2) different levels of friction; one to be able to hold the weight of the LCD/cover and the other able to support the opening of the keyboard. In the picture on the right you can see the smaller inside cover partially raised, that is where the keyboard would be mounted. Underneath is where the cord and wand were stored.(Project Management, Sheetmetal, Printed Circuit Bds, Plastic Molded Parts, Electronics, OEM modules) Scope : Design this portable piece of medical equipment using all OEM components. Needed to produce pre-production quantities using the silicone rubber mold process. There needed to be storage space for the power cord and the Programming Wand as they called it, which was the size of a large PC mouse and quite heavy (had a very large magnet inside). The unit also needed to be as small  and light weight as possible, as most of the users were female nurses; it also needed to be able to withstand a rugged environment. Results :  The customer was able to take the output from the ProE model files, have SLA (stereo-lithography) parts made and from that have the silicone rubber tooling made in a very short period of time; largely due to the simplicity of the part design. Parts all came together and fit first time out of the molds. The customer was able to take the model to shows and conduct field trials. Portable programming device for Pacemaker implants  ( included everything in a Laptop plus 3.5 or CD Drive, Roll Printer, external memory slot)
Vincent T. LaManna’s  Resume/Portfolio Military Projects Details:   The LCD and Keyboard were used from an OEM commercial Laptop computer. The housing Top & Bottom were designed to be plastic injection molded parts They were both enclosed with sheetmetal covers. The (2) hinge blocks and covers were also plastic. All covers were gasketed with inlay o-ring. The top open position was locked into place via a knob mounted on a Tran-Torque. A multi-position prop support exists due to the LCD being top heavy.(Project management, Sheetmetal, Precision machined, Printed Circuit Bds, Plastic Molded Parts, Electronics, OEM modules) Scope : Design a rugged enclosure to house a LCD & Keyboard, with a detachable cable using Mil connectors that could stand on it’s own  to be used, or mounted to the front of a rack mounted computer that would be in the back of a military jeep/truck. Pluggable with power and LED indicators. Vincent T. LaManna’s  Resume/Portfolio Fixtures/Tools Details:   I initally started out trying to make then from readily available hardware. The way this works is the thread has a pitch/lead of .05in, the bottom portion has set screws which fasten to the Valve Guide on the head, the top portion has set screws which fasten to the tip of the valve stem. They will provide for .550 valve opening. Each full turn opens or closes the valve .05 in. Scope : Needed to have a means to open a valve to a specific position and at specific know increments during Cylinder Head Flow Bench testing. Valve Quick Adjuster  (for use in cylinder head flow bench work) Results :  I machined these parts from 6061 Aluminum and single point cut the threads on each part (internal & external). The flats allow use of wrench. This item allowed for a quick repeatable means to flow cylinder heads. Details:   I used a piece of 3/4” thick Auluminum Jig plate for the base (pink), then machined a precision diameter to locate inside the tube where the bearing mounts (blue) a cap that fits the second bearing locates is held in place with a bolt thru the center (not shown) a bolt passes thru the upper and lower mounting points (not shown) Scope : Needed to have a means to hold/position the (4) main components during welding. Welding Fixture (for use in making Tiga rear suspension upright) Results :  Fixture allowed for all tubes in assembly to be tacked into place, once enough weld is in place the part could be flipped over to gain access to opposite side. Vincent T. LaManna’s  Resume/Portfolio Fixtures/Tools (cont.) Details:   I managed and designed this product along with architecting the software and user interface. What were traditionally products built from all catalog items I came up with a standard form factor base which gave the product it’s own identity as well as function. The base is open in the rear which is where the custom Driver Box resides (which I also designed), which made for a much cleaner looking product and took up less real estate. The business portion of the fixture was made up of precision linear and rotational stages, quick change custom fixturing and pneumatics and controls which provided clamping pressures for the pneumatic Collets as well as providing inflation pressure. (Project & Personnel Management, precision machining, sheetmetal, pneumatics, cabling, styling, OEM components) Scope : Design a Fixture Product which will hold cylindrical objects and rotate them so that they may be scanned by single or multiple probes, ie. Tubing, Medical Balloons, Stents, Catheters. This is a precision non contact measurement system that can measure wall thickness, I.D., O.D. and coatings down to micron level. Results :  This fixture was very well received by the medical manufacturing community and allowed measurement of critical medical components which couldn’t be accurately measured if at all previously. Vincent T. LaManna’s  Resume/Portfolio Fixtures/Tools (cont.) Details:   I managed and designed this product along with architecting the software and user interface. Multi-layer films, Silicon Wafers. This is a precision non contact measurement system that can measure material thickness, layer thickness and coatings down to micron level. Vincent T. LaManna’s  Resume/Portfolio Fixtures/Tools (cont.) Details:   I found a set of crude plans in an old Hot Rod magazine, I laid it out/designed in AutoCad Inventor and generated all the detail drawings and parts lists. The cabinet is MDO board screwed and glued, the control panel is an aluminum plate with machined features, the aperture plate is made from steel sheetmetal and uses (8) open frame high flow vacuum motors, the unit runs on 220v, the manometer and pressure meters were made from scratch. In order to flow a specific cylinder head I had to make a specific adaptor (wood working,  machining, sheetmetal,  cabling/wiring, OEM components) Scope : With my many years of involvement with racing from Go Karts to racing cars in SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) road racing and building my own engines, it became necessary to have a Flow Bench to quantify as well as get the most performance out of them… as the cylinder head and it’s ability to flow is where most of the power gains come from. Details:  using catalog items such as Beam Splitter, power meters and precision stages along with custom components this lab fixture was designed to give micron adjustment/positioning with feedback before gluing. (proof of principle/concept for manufacturing Scope : Design/layout fixture to precisely locate fibers for gluing for an Optical Switch application. LaManna’s  Resume/Portfolio Barcode Market  (Handheld) Concept layout based on new Image Engine New CCD Image Engine Details:  The concept models pictured above were created in ProE as an attempt to see what a new Handheld scanner may look like utilizing the new CCD image engine pictured at the right. This was a project I did as an independent Consultant. The CCD Image Engine on the right was generated as a new product. I worked with the optical engineer to come up with this optical configuration. Design consisted of (2) main housings, Lens Barrel, plastic molded lenses and marker Apertures, along with illumination PCB, CCD Bd and Controller PCB, Assembly was again designed for ease of assembly and low cost tooling. PCB’s were captured by plastic housings, which were fastened together with thread forming screws. CTF detail drawing were created and injection molds were made from 3D Cad files. Vincent T. LaManna’s  Resume/Portfolio Barcode Market  (Handheld) Details:  This Scanner is what became the flagship product for this company. I worked in a small “skunk works” R&D group where I was responsible  for most everything seen here, Plastic Housing design, PCB Layout, Molded Optics, Flex Circuits. This product was to be used in very rugged environments, needed to survive a 6ft drop onto concrete floor and still work. Mirrors were plastic injection molded to 1/4 wave flatness in localized areas. Again simple open and shut tooling which was the first 3D product design the company had and tooling for Housings were mostly generated with a paperless system. The project was a huge success and laid the ground work for many future quick to market products. My name is on a number of patents with regards to these products. (company firsts: SLA Rapid Prototypes, 3D Design, Brought ProE into company, “Paperless” CTF design, using PCB as optical platform, quick to market Aluminum Tooling, all under my guidance) Production based Scanner (50-60k/year)  took the company from a  $5 to$30 million company Plastic Molded Mirror Nylon Stainless filled motor cover for shielding Double Sided SMT Bd. LaManna’s  Resume/Portfolio Barcode Market  (Handheld) Production based Scanner (20-30k/year)  Target was retail market, smaller lite weight Details:  This is second major Handheld Barcode product I designed for this company. At this point I was Design Manager in the Product Development group, I was a “working” manager where I managed 3 other Mechanical designers and 1 PCB designer and their projects. On this project I designed all the housing components as well as the Molded Optics, I also did rough layout of the PCB/optical platform.This product was to be sold primarily to the retail markets, it still needed to survive a 6ft drop onto concrete floor. Mirrors were plastic injection molded to 1/4 wave flatness in localized areas. Again simple open and shut tooling and easy to assemble. There were 2 other products that we were doing that were based around this image engine. The goal was to get al (3) of these to a very important trade show as well as have quantities that the sales force could have. The result was to build 20 prototype models in record time. The show was a success and my team did a great job!! The clear plastic housings were used to perform ESD testing which were required to pass 1800v testing.

Vincent T. LaManna’s  Resume/Portfolio Racing Projects (cont.) Custom New Nose Design for Tiga S2000 Race car Hand sculpted in expandable foam (just removed from car) These pictures represent one of my winter projects, where my goal was to come up with a new Nose design which would be more aerodynamic. The original nose had a lot of vertical frontal area. The desired result would be good downforce with a higher straight line speed. The pictures depict the different stages of the project. The first node was laid up in Fiberglass, but the mold could also be used for Carbon Fiber. Part Master, also known as the “Buck” just finished (Foam, Fiberglass, Putty, Gray Primer Buck coated with Tooling Gel-Coat, ready to start mold lay-up Completion of Fiberglass mold (Buck removed, ready for waxing and first part lay-up) First part laid up in Mold First part removed from Mold, ready for trimming. Vincent T. LaManna’s  Resume/Portfolio Racing Projects (cont.) Spindle Clamp Nut for Tiga S2000 Race car Spindle Clamp Nut;  This nut holds the front wheel on and sets the Taper Bearing clearances. The original nut only allowed for finite adjustment positions, which could end up with too much clearance or too little, result, too much rolling resistance or too much wheel play, which could result in handling issues. The new nut allows for infinite adjustment to perfectly tune to the desired fit. I designed the nut in AutoCad Inventor, then machined them on my Lathe. The threads were single point cut. Since many of these parts were either no longer available or difficult to find I wanted to change the design so that I could use parts that are more readily available. I performed all the machining on both parts. Vincent T. LaManna’s  Resume/Portfolio Racing Projects (cont.) Cylinder Head FlowBench Work Flowbench work;  In all forms of racing that I have competed in, I have always built my own engines. Realizing that most power improvements come from a properly “Ported” head. I built my own Flowbench and began testing Heads, my current config. ported by?? Stock heads and heads done by well known engine builders. From there I was able to create a baseline and quantify what I had. From a Stock Head to my first finished Head I was able to see gains of 15-18% which translated in my first outing to winning; beating fellow competitors that I previously couldn’t compete with. Vincent T. LaManna’s  Resume/Portfolio Racing Projects (cont.) Flywheel Mods for 2.0L Race Engine 2.0L Ford Flywheel;  One of the allowable engine modifications is to reduce the weight of the stock Flywheel from 17 lbs to 10. Lbs.. I modeled the Flywheel in ProE and with the mass properties was able to get very close to the minimum weight. The CAD output file was used for CNC programming. Stock 2.0L Ford Flywheel, 17lbs (ProE) Nose Mounting Bracket formed (ProE) Nose Mounting Bracket Flat Pattern (ProE) Modified 2.0L Ford Flywheel, 10.5lbs (ProE) Nose Mounting Bracket for Tiga  Race car Nose Mounting Bracket;  This is a sheetmetal design to be used on the front of the nose (2 locations). It guides the nose and holds it down, it also mounts a Dzeus spring clip for quarter turn quick release fastener. I fabricated these in my shop and they worked quite well.
Vincent T. LaManna’s  Resume/Portfolio Racing Projects (cont.) 3 Stage Oil Pump Shaft Rear Diffuser Mold;  One of the methods of generating more down force on a race car with minimal drag is to add a rear diffuser, which when properly designed, helps “suck” the air out from the bottom side of the car, thus creating a low pressure area.. From the flat pattern drawing I laid this out on a sheet of Aluminum, then formed it up on my Sheetmetal Break. I then coated with mold release and laid up a fiberglass Diffuser. (another hard to find part)
Vincent T. LaManna’s  Resume/Portfolio Racing Projects (cont.) Rear Upright Weldment;  The original upright as built by Tiga was a casting, which were known to break. The drive axle components, Hub, outboard CV joint and axles were pretty much obsolete and the CV joint was integral to the stub axle, so before I had a CV joint go bad I wanted to convert it over to more readily available parts. I could have modified the original casting, but chose to leave it in it’s original condition as it would have greater value to vintage racers should I sell the car. I was also concerned with the amount of material to be machined away and the resultant strength. As you can see some of the tube intersections some interesting geometry, so what I did is to treat each tube a “Sheetmetal” and generate a 1:1 paper template of the flat pattern for each tube, I then wrapped those around the actual tubes and scribed a line of where to cut each tube. The result was nicely fitting tubes to position in the fixture for welding. I also did the same thing for the main hub, scribing the intersecting location for each tube. The assembly is TIG welded which I did myself. The resulting part has worked quite well for over 5 years and the entire corner assembly is ~2lbs lighter than original.
Vincent T. LaManna’s  Resume/Portfolio Racing Products AeroCam In-Car Video;  This was a product idea I came up with as a Driver training aid. When you are an amateur racer you never get enough track time/practice. Being able to review your on track session helps fill that void, especially with Data Acquisition overlaid. The design  utilized an OEM CCD imager board, which was mounted between the (2) halves of the housing. Also mounted inside the housing was a microphone. The whole assemble had multiple mounting configurations which used a special vibration dampening material; Sorbathane The Housing was assembled using thread forming screws. A single shielded cable connected to a remote recording device. The Prototype  was created by having a SLA made from the ProE CAD file, from that I made a Silicone Rubber mold for the (2) Housing halves, Rollbar “V” mount and CCD Mounting Nest Blocks. The inner Clamp Plate was made from Sheet Aluminum with PEMS and the lower Mounting Plate machined from Aluminum Plate. I made a steel rule die to make the Sorbathane Isolation Pad. LaManna’s  Resume/Portfolio Racing Products Filtered Microphone;  I worked with an Electrical Engineer to try and come up with a Microphone for my In-Car Video system that would do a better job of filtering wind noise. The goal was to be able to mount the microphone inside the camera housing. The Result  was this small double sided surface mount PCB, which I laid out using PADS, ordered and built. Custom Filtering Microphone for AeroCam In-Car Video Weber 2 Barrel Carburetor Cover Cover on 2 Barrel Carburetor Silicone Rubber Mold Cast Carburetor Cover Filtered Microphone;  since on the Racecar the air filter isn’t located directly on the carburetor (it’s in the Air Scoop/Snorkel) it is necessary to be able to cover the Carb during transport/ non race times. The Result  was I took clay and made an impression and sculpted it. I then made a silicone rubber mold so I could cast them. The part fit very nicely and served it’s purpose.
Vincent T. LaManna’s  Resume/Portfolio Racing Products Self Timer/Data Acquisition Unit Self Timer;  another important tool to help improve your driving is knowing your lap times immediately, so you then know what worked and what didn’t. This unit would also allow limits to be entered for items such as, Oil Pressure, Temps & RPM where the driver could get an audible alarm as a warning. There were a few similar systems available, but much larger and more costly than I knew we could design. The Result  was I teamed up with an Electrical Engineer to work with me on this design. Other than the custom housing design all parts would be available from a company such as Digi-Key. I was never able to complete this project, which I deeply regret as I believe I would have been leading edge technology and have an affordable technology for the average Club Racer, which is one of my main objectives. Vincent T. LaManna’s  Resume/Portfolio Misc. Products Overview;  This piece of test equipment was for the Telephony Industry, it was for computer automated telephone line testing, very hi tech for the day. It was designed for 19” racks, all sheetmetal enclosure, multiple PCB card slots. Responsible for concept through manufacturing. Product lines were later approved and purchased by AT&T Bell Labs. (UL/CSA approved, EMI/RFI tested) Teleprobe, 19” Rack Mount Test Equipment (front view) Lens Prototype (ProE) System Layout for Silicon Wafer Inspection Teleprobe, 19” Rack Mount Test Equipment (rear view) Teleprobe (Telephone Line Testing) Silicon Wafer Inspection (optical layout) Overview;  working as a consultant I worked with the Optical Engineer to come up with this complex/tight layout. The customer had only been working in 2D and didn’t feel comfortable trusting the results. Due to the close quarters the lens assembly had to be truncated on the bottom to clear the wafer sample. We made a complete SLA assembly for proof of concept and to convey to their customer.

Vincent T. LaManna’s  Resume/Portfolio References (cont.) Vince LaManna has been my designer for the Fusion 5,1 Sample Handler. I understand that he was told his time is up in November. I can also tell you that, in 18 years designing products, Vince is one of the best product designers I have worked with, and I've worked with more than 50 designers, during 12 successful product designs and launches, since 1984. We have some great designers on staff, but candidly, Vince is a better product designer than some of the people currently on staff (my opinion). There may be some designers who have better knowledge of Pro E, but there are only a few on staff now who are as thorough, creative, focused and who have the breadth of product design and develop skills that Vince has. The SaHa was the first 'big' module verified on Oasis (ahead of plan, I might add), and it has very few reliability problems on EM's. That is due, in large part, to Vince's ability. That the SaHa has few problems also means it gets little attention, but that's a good thing. Basically, if there was a way to keep him around, working on Fusion 5,1, 3,1, ECi AT etc, it would be to OrthoClinical's benefit. I've worked with a lot of designers. I don't give this kind of recommendation often. He's an uncommonly good product designer, in my opinion, and he can add value to the efforts that are ahead of us. Larry 10/14/02

LaManna’s Resume/Portfolio Medical Projects Details: 2 main housing parts designed for Structural Foam, all simple open and shut tooling with no side draws etc. Carousel carriers (pucks) designed as a multi part ABS assembly ultrasonically assembled with moveable anchor/drive pin which couples to the belt lugs below the deck. Bulky under deck harnessing replaced with simple Printed Circuit Bds which held all “down plugable” connectors and sensors. Barcode readers were mounted below deck and utilized a fold mirror for reading of tubes and tray. (Project Management, Precision machined , Sheetmetal, Printed Circuit Bds, Plastic Molded Parts, Drives, Optics) J&J Blood Analyzer (Vitros 5,1) Sample Handler Module (SAHA) Scope : Design new Sample Handler Unit for the Vitros 5,1 product line. Needed to work with existing Test Tube Carousel, hold 15 plus 1 STAT position, register Carousel accurately in 3 positions without spilling/splashing, read Barcode on Tubes and Carousel in 2 positions, spill containment/easy clean-up, stand alone, field serviceable/replaceable module, FDA requirements. Results : “Vince designed and developed a Sample Processing Center for a clinical blood analyzer, a significant subsystem in an FDA-approved product that Johnson & Johnson released in 2005. His work was very thorough and he did early creative concept development, he developed the entire design database for production drawings and specifications, and he was involved in verification and validation efforts in support of commercialization and FDA approval. His comprehensive approach to the design challenge resulted in a Sample Processing Center that is very well received by customers, and has been in production since 2005, with no manufacturing problems. The design history file he helped create, has been audited by the FDA and they actually liked it. Vince was able to work very well with Process Engineers, Manufacturing Engineers, CAD designers and Design Engineers to deliver a successful design to commercialization, within tight schedule and budget constraints.   • 3. Vincent T. LaManna’s Resume/Portfolio Medical Projects Details: With the requirement of having the parts made through the Silicone Rubber mold process, it was my goal to design each part for as simple of tooling as possible, i.e.. No side draws, inserts, hand pickouts etc. Of the over 20 separate plastic parts required to make the complete assembly, there was only (1) part that needed to have a side draw in the tooling, that was for the screw holes for mounting the friction hinges. The friction hinge was a double action with (2) different levels of friction; one to be able to hold the weight of the LCD/cover and the other able to support the opening of the keyboard. In the picture on the right you can see the smaller inside cover partially raised, that is where the keyboard would be mounted. Underneath is where the cord and wand were stored.(Project Management, Sheetmetal, Printed Circuit Bds, Plastic Molded Parts, Electronics, OEM modules) Scope : Design this portable piece of medical equipment using all OEM components. Needed to produce pre-production quantities using the silicone rubber mold process. There needed to be storage space for the power cord and the Programming Wand as they called it, which was the size of a large PC mouse and quite heavy (had a very large magnet inside). The unit also needed to be as small and light weight as possible, as most of the users were female nurses; it also needed to be able to withstand a rugged environment. Results : The customer was able to take the output from the ProE model files, have SLA (stereo-lithography) parts made and from that have the silicone rubber tooling made in a very short period of time; largely due to the simplicity of the part design. Parts all came together and fit first time out of the molds. The customer was able to take the model to shows and conduct field trials. Portable programming device for Pacemaker implants ( included everything in a Laptop plus 3.5 or CD Drive, Roll Printer, external memory slot)
  • 4. Vincent T. LaManna’s Resume/Portfolio Military Projects Details: The LCD and Keyboard were used from an OEM commercial Laptop computer. The housing Top & Bottom were designed to be plastic injection molded parts They were both enclosed with sheetmetal covers. The (2) hinge blocks and covers were also plastic. All covers were gasketed with inlay o-ring. The top open position was locked into place via a knob mounted on a Tran-Torque. A multi-position prop support exists due to the LCD being top heavy.(Project management, Sheetmetal, Precision machined, Printed Circuit Bds, Plastic Molded Parts, Electronics, OEM modules) Scope : Design a rugged enclosure to house a LCD & Keyboard, with a detachable cable using Mil connectors that could stand on it’s own to be used, or mounted to the front of a rack mounted computer that would be in the back of a military jeep/truck. Stand Alone LCD & Keyboard (SALK) ( can be used remotely or mounted to front of Rack mounted Computer) Results : CAD Model geometry used in conjunction with CTF (critical to function) detail drawings to generate prototype models and production injection molding tools

Assembly snaps together, (1) PCB snap into place, other fasten with Thread Forming Screws.(Project Management, Sheetmetal, Printed Circuit Bds, Plastic Molded Parts, Electronics, OEM Batteries) Scope : Dual Battery Module; Conventional 9 volt & special military battery. Pluggable with power and LED indicators. Pluggable Battery Module w/indicators Results : CAD Model geometry used in conjunction with CTF (critical to function) detail drawings to generate prototype models and production injection molding tools

Pluggable Hard Drive Module Results : CAD Model geometry used in conjunction with CTF (critical to function) detail drawings to generate prototype models and production injection molding tools

Details: A 2 piece plastic injection molded Housing design, (simple open & shut tooling design) Hard drive mounted to Aluminum plate, which was suspended by four Sorbathane dampening blocks, elastomeric pull/carry handle, connectors mounted on floating plates for blind plugging (Project Management, CNC machined housing, Sheetmetal, Plastic Molded Parts, OEM Components,) Scope : Design a military grade Laptop computer using components from conventional commercial grade laptop computers. Lower volumes, plaster cast mold vs. die cast. Military Laptop Computer (advertisement photo was with a Hummer tire parked on top) Results : CAD Model geometry used in conjunction with CTF (critical to function) detail drawings to generate prototype models (CNC machined) and production Plaster Mold Castings tools.
  • 8. Vincent T. LaManna’s Resume/Portfolio Fixtures/Tools Details: I initally started out trying to make then from readily available hardware. The way this works is the thread has a pitch/lead of .05in, the bottom portion has set screws which fasten to the Valve Guide on the head, the top portion has set screws which fasten to the tip of the valve stem. They will provide for .550 valve opening. Each full turn opens or closes the valve .05 in. Scope : Needed to have a means to open a valve to a specific position and at specific know increments during Cylinder Head Flow Bench testing. Valve Quick Adjuster (for use in cylinder head flow bench work) Results : I machined these parts from 6061 Aluminum and single point cut the threads on each part (internal & external). The flats allow use of wrench. This item allowed for a quick repeatable means to flow cylinder heads. Details: I used a piece of 3/4” thick Auluminum Jig plate for the base (pink), then machined a precision diameter to locate inside the tube where the bearing mounts (blue) a cap that fits the second bearing locates is held in place with a bolt thru the center (not shown) a bolt passes thru the upper and lower mounting points (not shown) Scope : Needed to have a means to hold/position the (4) main components during welding. Welding Fixture (for use in making Tiga rear suspension upright) Results : Fixture allowed for all tubes in assembly to be tacked into place, once enough weld is in place the part could be flipped over to gain access to opposite side.   • 10. Vincent T. LaManna’s Resume/Portfolio Fixtures/Tools (cont.) Details: I managed and designed this product along with architecting the software and user interface. What were traditionally products built from all catalog items I came up with a standard form factor base which gave the product it’s own identity as well as function. The base is open in the rear which is where the custom Driver Box resides (which I also designed), which made for a much cleaner looking product and took up less real estate. The business portion of the fixture was made up of precision linear and rotational stages, quick change custom fixturing and pneumatics and controls which provided clamping pressures for the pneumatic Collets as well as providing inflation pressure. (Project & Personnel Management, precision machining, sheetmetal, pneumatics, cabling, styling, OEM components) Scope : Design a Fixture Product which will hold cylindrical objects and rotate them so that they may be scanned by single or multiple probes, ie. Tubing, Medical Balloons, Stents, Catheters. This is a precision non contact measurement system that can measure wall thickness, I.D., O.D. and coatings down to micron level. Results : This fixture was very well received by the medical manufacturing community and allowed measurement of critical medical components which couldn’t be accurately measured if at all previously.   • 11. Vincent T. LaManna’s Resume/Portfolio Fixtures/Tools (cont.) Details: I managed and designed this product along with architecting the software and user interface. What were traditionally products built from all catalog items I came up with a standard form factor base which gave the product it’s own identity as well as function (ref the RoLSS product). The base is open in the rear which is where the custom Driver Box resides (which I also designed), which made for a much cleaner looking product and took up less real estate. The business portion of the fixture was made up of precision linear stages. The stages could be controlled via software or the manual jog controls. (Project & Personnel Management, precision machining, sheetmetal, pneumatics, cabling, styling, OEM components) Scope : Design a Fixture Product which will hold flat objects so that they may be scanned by single probes, ie. Multi-layer films, Silicon Wafers. This is a precision non contact measurement system that can measure material thickness, layer thickness and coatings down to micron level. Results : This fixture was used by medical film manufactures in there labs where they could simulate the measurements on moving web applications.. X-Y Scanning Fixture (Lumetrics Inc.)
  • 12. Vincent T. LaManna’s Resume/Portfolio Fixtures/Tools (cont.) Details: I found a set of crude plans in an old Hot Rod magazine, I laid it out/designed in AutoCad Inventor and generated all the detail drawings and parts lists. The cabinet is MDO board screwed and glued, the control panel is an aluminum plate with machined features, the aperture plate is made from steel sheetmetal and uses (8) open frame high flow vacuum motors, the unit runs on 220v, the manometer and pressure meters were made from scratch. In order to flow a specific cylinder head I had to make a specific adaptor (wood working, machining, sheetmetal, cabling/wiring, OEM components) Scope : With my many years of involvement with racing from Go Karts to racing cars in SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) road racing and building my own engines, it became necessary to have a Flow Bench to quantify as well as get the most performance out of them… as the cylinder head and it’s ability to flow is where most of the power gains come from. Results : was a very well functioning tool with very good repeatability and results on the race track. Cylinder Head Flow Bench

Details: using catalog items such as Beam Splitter, power meters and precision stages along with custom components this lab fixture was designed to give micron adjustment/positioning with feedback before gluing. (proof of principle/concept for manufacturing Scope : Design/layout fixture to precisely locate fibers for gluing for an Optical Switch application. LaManna’s Resume/Portfolio Barcode Market (Handheld) Concept layout based on new Image Engine New CCD Image Engine Details: The concept models pictured above were created in ProE as an attempt to see what a new Handheld scanner may look like utilizing the new CCD image engine pictured at the right. This was a project I did as an independent Consultant. The CCD Image Engine on the right was generated as a new product. I worked with the optical engineer to come up with this optical configuration. Design consisted of (2) main housings, Lens Barrel, plastic molded lenses and marker Apertures, along with illumination PCB, CCD Bd and Controller PCB, Assembly was again designed for ease of assembly and low cost tooling. PCB’s were captured by plastic housings, which were fastened together with thread forming screws. CTF detail drawing were created and injection molds were made from 3D Cad files.   • 15. Vincent T. LaManna’s Resume/Portfolio Barcode Market (Handheld) Details: This Scanner is what became the flagship product for this company. I worked in a small “skunk works” R&D group where I was responsible for most everything seen here, Plastic Housing design, PCB Layout, Molded Optics, Flex Circuits. This product was to be used in very rugged environments, needed to survive a 6ft drop onto concrete floor and still work. Mirrors were plastic injection molded to 1/4 wave flatness in localized areas. Again simple open and shut tooling which was the first 3D product design the company had and tooling for Housings were mostly generated with a paperless system. The project was a huge success and laid the ground work for many future quick to market products. My name is on a number of patents with regards to these products. LaManna’s Resume/Portfolio Barcode Market (Handheld) Production based Scanner (20-30k/year) Target was retail market, smaller lite weight Details: This is second major Handheld Barcode product I designed for this company. At this point I was Design Manager in the Product Development group, I was a “working” manager where I managed 3 other Mechanical designers and 1 PCB designer and their projects. On this project I designed all the housing components as well as the Molded Optics, I also did rough layout of the PCB/optical platform.This product was to be sold primarily to the retail markets, it still needed to survive a 6ft drop onto concrete floor. Mirrors were plastic injection molded to 1/4 wave flatness in localized areas. Again simple open and shut tooling and easy to assemble. There were 2 other products that we were doing that were based around this image engine. The goal was to get al (3) of these to a very important trade show as well as have quantities that the sales force could have. The result was to build 20 prototype models in record time. The show was a success and my team did a great job!! The clear plastic housings were used to perform ESD testing which were required to pass 1800v testing.

Custom New Nose Design for Tiga S2000 Race car Hand sculpted in expandable foam (just removed from car) These pictures represent one of my winter projects, where my goal was to come up with a new Nose design which would be more aerodynamic. The original nose had a lot of vertical frontal area. The desired result would be good downforce with a higher straight line speed. The pictures depict the different stages of the project. The first node was laid up in Fiberglass, but the mold could also be used for Carbon Fiber. Part Master, also known as the “Buck” just finished (Foam, Fiberglass, Putty, Gray Primer Buck coated with Tooling Gel-Coat, ready to start mold lay-up Completion of Fiberglass mold (Buck removed, ready for waxing and first part lay-up) First part laid up in Mold First part removed from Mold, ready for trimming. Nose trimmed and Black Gel-Coat polished. Nose fitted to the car.
  • 22. Vincent T. LaManna’s Resume/Portfolio Racing Projects (cont.) Spindle Clamp Nut for Tiga S2000 Race car Spindle Clamp Nut; This nut holds the front wheel on and sets the Taper Bearing clearances. The original nut only allowed for finite adjustment positions, which could end up with too much clearance or too little, result, too much rolling resistance or too much wheel play, which could result in handling issues. The new nut allows for infinite adjustment to perfectly tune to the desired fit. I designed the nut in AutoCad Inventor, then machined them on my Lathe. The threads were single point cut. New Clamp Nut Design Aluminum Radiator Design (ProE) Drawing sent to Radiator mfg to quote/make New Nut with Original Nut New Clamp Nut installed on car. Aluminum Radiator for Tiga S2000 Race car Aluminum Radiator; The original radiators on this car were Brass which were heavy, so in an effort to get the car down to allowable minimum weight along with better cooling I designed and had the aluminum radiator(s) made. (car has 2 radiators)
  • 23. Vincent T. LaManna’s Resume/Portfolio Racing Projects (cont.) Front Wheel Hub for Tiga S2000 Race car Wheel Hub/Brake Rotor; The original design was a one piece Brake Rotor/Hub. Since many of these parts were either no longer available or difficult to find I wanted to change the design so that I could use parts that are more readily available. I performed all the machining on both parts. Realizing that most power improvements come from a properly “Ported” head. I built my own Flowbench and began testing Heads, my current config. ported by?? Stock heads and heads done by well known engine builders. From there I was able to create a baseline and quantify what I had. From a Stock Head to my first finished Head I was able to see gains of 15-18% which translated in my first outing to winning; beating fellow competitors that I previously couldn’t compete with. Flywheel Mods for 2.0L Race Engine 2.0L Ford Flywheel; One of the allowable engine modifications is to reduce the weight of the stock Flywheel from 17 lbs to 10. Lbs.. I modeled the Flywheel in ProE and with the mass properties was able to get very close to the minimum weight. The CAD output file was used for CNC programming. LaManna’s Resume/Portfolio Racing Projects (cont.) 3 Stage Oil Pump Shaft Rear Diffuser Mold; One of the methods of generating more down force on a race car with minimal drag is to add a rear diffuser, which when properly designed, helps “suck” the air out from the bottom side of the car, thus creating a low pressure area.. From the flat pattern drawing I laid this out on a sheet of Aluminum, then formed it up on my Sheetmetal Break. I then coated with mold release and laid up a fiberglass Diffuser.   • 27. Vincent T. LaManna’s Resume/Portfolio Racing Projects (cont.) Rear Upright Weldment; The original upright as built by Tiga was a casting, which were known to break. The drive axle components, Hub, outboard CV joint and axles were pretty much obsolete and the CV joint was integral to the stub axle, so before I had a CV joint go bad I wanted to convert it over to more readily available parts. I could have modified the original casting, but chose to leave it in it’s original condition as it would have greater value to vintage racers should I sell the car. I was also concerned with the amount of material to be machined away and the resultant strength. As you can see some of the tube intersections some interesting geometry, so what I did is to treat each tube a “Sheetmetal” and generate a 1:1 paper template of the flat pattern for each tube, I then wrapped those around the actual tubes and scribed a line of where to cut each tube. The result was nicely fitting tubes to position in the fixture for welding. I also did the same thing for the main hub, scribing the intersecting location for each tube. The assembly is TIG welded which I did myself. The resulting part has worked quite well for over 5 years and the entire corner assembly is ~2lbs lighter than original.
  • 28. Vincent T. LaManna’s Resume/Portfolio Racing Products AeroCam In-Car Video; This was a product idea I came up with as a Driver training aid. When you are an amateur racer you never get enough track time/practice. Being able to review your on track session helps fill that void, especially with Data Acquisition overlaid. The design utilized an OEM CCD imager board, which was mounted between the (2) halves of the housing. Also mounted inside the housing was a microphone. The whole assemble had multiple mounting configurations which used a special vibration dampening material; Sorbathane The Housing was assembled using thread forming screws. A single shielded cable connected to a remote recording device. The Prototype was created by having a SLA made from the ProE CAD file, from that I made a Silicone Rubber mold for the (2) Housing halves, Rollbar “V” mount and CCD Mounting Nest Blocks. The inner Clamp Plate was made from Sheet Aluminum with PEMS and the lower Mounting Plate machined from Aluminum Plate. I made a steel rule die to make the Sorbathane Isolation Pad. LaManna’s Resume/Portfolio Racing Products Filtered Microphone; I worked with an Electrical Engineer to try and come up with a Microphone for my In-Car Video system that would do a better job of filtering wind noise. The goal was to be able to mount the microphone inside the camera housing. The Result was this small double sided surface mount PCB, which I laid out using PADS, ordered and built. The Result was I took clay and made an impression and sculpted it. I then made a silicone rubber mold so I could cast them. The part fit very nicely and served it’s purpose.

LaManna’s Resume/Portfolio Racing Products Self Timer/Data Acquisition Unit Self Timer; another important tool to help improve your driving is knowing your lap times immediately, so you then know what worked and what didn’t. This unit would also allow limits to be entered for items such as, Oil Pressure, Temps & RPM where the driver could get an audible alarm as a warning. There were a few similar systems available, but much larger and more costly than I knew we could design. The Result was I teamed up with an Electrical Engineer to work with me on this design. Other than the custom housing design all parts would be available from a company such as Digi-Key. I was never able to complete this project, which I deeply regret as I believe I would have been leading edge technology and have an affordable technology for the average Club Racer, which is one of my main objectives. Products Overview; This piece of test equipment was for the Telephony Industry, it was for computer automated telephone line testing, very hi tech for the day. It was designed for 19” racks, all sheetmetal enclosure, multiple PCB card slots. Responsible for concept through manufacturing. Product lines were later approved and purchased by AT&T Bell Labs. The customer had only been working in 2D and didn’t feel comfortable trusting the results. Due to the close quarters the lens assembly had to be truncated on the bottom to clear the wafer sample. We made a complete SLA assembly for proof of concept and to convey to their customer.

I can also tell you that, in 18 years designing products, Vince is one of the best product designers I have worked with, and I've worked with more than 50 designers, during 12 successful product designs and launches, since 1984. We have some great designers on staff, but candidly, Vince is a better product designer than some of the people currently on staff (my opinion). There may be some designers who have better knowledge of Pro E, but there are only a few on staff now who are as thorough, creative, focused and who have the breadth of product design and develop skills that Vince has. The SaHa was the first 'big' module verified on Oasis (ahead of plan, I might add), and it has very few reliability problems on EM's. That is due, in large part, to Vince's ability. That the SaHa has few problems also means it gets little attention, but that's a good thing. Basically, if there was a way to keep him around, working on Fusion 5,1, 3,1, ECi AT etc, it would be to OrthoClinical's benefit. I've worked with a lot of designers. I don't give this kind of recommendation often. He's an uncommonly good product designer, in my opinion, and he can add value to the efforts that are ahead of us. Larry 10/14/02
