May the Holydays and the New Year bless us with ‘Good Hearts’ and ‘Good Hands’ to love and serve our fellow beings and make the World a better place for all – free of poverty of all kinds! --------------------------------------------- The eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) – which range from halving extreme poverty rates to halting the spread of HIV/AIDS and providing universal primary education, all by the target date of 2015 – form a blueprint agreed to by all the world’s countries and all the world’s leading development institutions. They have galvanized unprecedented efforts to meet the needs of the world’s poorest. The UN is also working with governments, civil society and other partners to build on the momentum generated by the MDGs and carry on with an ambitious post-2015 development agenda. Poverty is not having access to school and not knowing how to read. Poverty is not having a job, is fear for the future, living one day at a time. Poverty has many faces, changing from place to place and across time, and has been described in many ways. Most often, poverty is a situation people want to escape. So poverty is a call to action -- for the poor and the wealthy alike -- a call to change the world so that many more may have enough to eat, adequate shelter, access to education and health, protection from violence, and a voice in what happens in their communities.” - [Source: World Bank] We may extend the scope of Poverty to other areas as well. As managers and leaders, we may also focus on eradicating Poverty that is found in organizations and communities. Poverty has many faces. Some of these are: "Lack of .....": -Food, Clothing, Shelter, Healthcare, Health -Education, Employment, Equality, Equity -Love, Compassion, Peace, Empathy, Morality -Quality, Performance, Service, Excellence -Teamwork, Synergy, Focus, Commitment -Responsibility, Accountability, urge to excel -Servant Leadership – with an urge to serve & elevate others ----------------------------------- Source of images: http://www.undp.org/mdg/ You can find more information about Millennium Development Goals and Post-2015 Development Agenda there.
