Using Tin Can for Blended Learning

Notas del editor

  1. Welcome everyone. My Name is Michael Roberts, and I am the CEO at vTrainingRoom Incorporated. Primarily I am a product evangelist, and spend a majority of my time working with companies that are designing and deploying learning management platforms and custom web based learning solutions.I have been in the training industry for over a decade and have both an HR and IT background.Kevin is also on the call, and will be helping to organize questions, and assisting participants. So I would like to start of today with a quick overview of Tin Can, and then dive right into how it can be used with an LMS. I am going to assume that most of you are at least familiar with the concept of SCORM, and a bit familiar with the experience API/Tin Can, but if not, my brief overview should help you get your bearings a bit. And the goal is that by the end of this webinar you should be prepared to integrate Tin Can as a tool into your learning program.
  2. Plans to implement Tin Can?I’m a Thought Leader and already use Tin Can. I’m an early adopter and plan to implement a solution in the next 3 monthsI'm on the fence, not convinced, or never heard of the Tin Can API.I've made a lifelong commitment to SCORM1.2, and I will never change.
  3. Wikipedia defines Blended Learning as an education that combines face-to-face classroom methods with computer-mediated activities. So it’s a Mixed mode form of instruction also called web enhanced, or flipping the classroom.IdeallyInstructors can spend more time interacting with students instead of lecturing when face to face. Coaching instead of lecturing. Increase human contact, and spend more time one on one with students addressing their skill gaps.Best analogy one can think of is like homework, but more emphasis is on pre-work and capitalizing on face time.
  4. On of the biggest challenges with the training room or Instructor led environment is that there is often little one on one time with learnersOther challenges with instructor led training include Less flexablity in terms of scheduling, location and resources, everyone has to be in the same space at the same time. Even this webinar is being conducted synconusly, vs self paced Web Based training.ResourcesThe content in workbooks, and lab material is often formated for faciliators and Subject Matter Experts are the gatekeepers of resources and information, In many organizations there is a lot of tribal learning – which has the inherent problem of inconsistency, as processes are passed from one worker to another. Finally the talent and transfer the knowledge is limited by the availability of the trainer. As we look towards delivery methods with traditional learning, Even in the digital WBT arena you often have 1 mode of learning. You have physical media and online media. But for highest learning outcomes and strongest retention there needs to be more than just a click through module approach. Many pieces of content can be tough to deliver online, without the context discussion brings. Finally there are challenges with enrollment and records retention. Data is often captured on paper rosters and results are difficult to track and align with outcomes.
  5. Are you already using Blended Learning to solve some of these challenges?Yes, we use blended learning. No, we don’t yet.
  6. Its important to note that Blended learning comes in many flavors. There is a broad continuum and there could be varying degrees of online or outside of the classroom training combined with traditional classroom and office hours. There are many models of blended learning like:Rotational where students rotate between classes and onlineFlex, where most of the content is online and students check in with a small group of cohorts or instructor as needed.Flipped Classroom – most of the content is provided outside of the classroom in a particular course and then learners spend scheduled time in the classroom synthesizing and discussing the material. So what does it take to get started. Maybe you have some lecture videos, some quick reference guides or web based training, and you are looking for a way to tie it all together and flip the classroom, the question becomes how does the Tin Can API help. The API or application programming interface was designed as a flexible framework to track learning experiences. Its far superior to its predicessor SCORM, and was designed to overcome some of the technical constraints of other eLearning protocols. Tin Can is a perfect technology for Blended learning because it was specifically designed to track learning experiences. With Tin Can learners experience activities and then the results are stored in a Learning Records store, in the form of statements. So let’s dig into what a statement is…
  7. The basic philosophy behind Tin Can and the statements is that learning is a series of experiences that can be expressed as statments. These statement follow the form of I did this. Where there is always a noun a verb, and an object. When an activity takes place the content fires out a statement about the activity as a statement. Later we can mine all the statements to pull out useful data about learning that took place. An example of a few statements are shown on the right. This is one example of a visualization of statements from a Learning Records Store, again that is the repository where the statements are stored.Simply looking at the statements, or generating reports, trainers can evaluate what learning is taking place, how frequently, and in what forms. So you could take all sorts of experiences like, Michael read a book, Michael attended a webinar, Michael completed a module about Instructional Design, and eventually determine if Michael has obtained competency in a subject.
  8. So where should you begin. I would suggest you start small. Focus on an initiative like streamling the onboarding process. Start with a small chunk of content, and then continue to focus on chunks that you can begin to carve out and treat as prework, or homeworkNext think more broadly about what you would do if you had more time to focus with students. Imagine you gain 1 more hour, is the plan to just bank that time as savings or commit more time to focused development for the individual learnerfind resources and get supoprt from stakeholders early on in the process, one thing that is nice about blended learning is its transitional which is not as scary as a complete change. There may be a lot of content that you can repurpose, and speed up development of a new program.Do you have an LMS you can leverage? What about a CMS? What about rapid authoring tools? With any single one of these types of tools and Tin Can, there is no longer a barrier to implementing blended learning. Tin Can and a Learning Records Store helps bring all the data together and manage the stream of learning without technology getting in the way.
  9. You Mentioned a CMS can you tell me what that is and how it would help? How expensive is a Learning Records Store compared to a Learning Management System?
  10. For adult learners,Learning is best done though experiences with small modules, of highly focused and applicable content that relates to tasks and activities of the end user. The idea is to start small.Begin by breaking content into modulesYou don’t have to take an all or nothing approach. Remember the idea is to mix online materials with more traditional instruction. Find the best way to leverage the blended approach, don’t try to take content that should not be delivered online and cram it into that medium. You could get a quick start by Converting modules into wbt using a rapid authoring tool, or rapid game authoring toolStart simple with PDF style page turners, videos, podcasts, then get more sophisticated. If you can use power point then you can use most tools available. There are plenty of companies that can help you convert your ILT to WBT, webinar recordings, lecture videos, or just page turning pdfs. The idea is to first try to repurpose existing content.Lets not kid ourselves Materials development is a time and labor intensive process. Repurposing content will help, but will only get you so far. You will need to be creative to come up with new assets for Blended learning. But the question shouldn’t be how much time will it take to convert the entire program to WBT, but rather, if I can offload this content in chucks to be done outside of the class, how much time does that save. Are we willing to make an investment upfront that will pay dividends in the short and long term in terms of time to transfer knowledge, and productivity increases, for every hour we invest in creating new learning programs. What can we do differently during office hours and classroom time for every hour we save.
  11. I want to mention a few things about modern delivery of content. Whether you push or pull the content. Pushing content is very traditional. Push is where you send emails, or map development plans and present the specific content you want the learner to access. Then you say “you must do this”Pull is where you make a repository of learning materials available, and allow users to access (or pull down) content that they require, examples would be a resource portal (like sharepoint) where learners can search for information specific to a task and complete JIT. Quick reference guides, getting started videos, FAQs Key benefit is that learners have control over when they watch the videos, or WBT modules, with the theory being that they are more alert and more willing to take in more new information. Content is delivered when they are ready to learn. The difficulty in the past, and reason why so many folks pushed content is because it is easier to track who accessed it. With Tin Can you can more easily track who is accessing what content. The content can go on your LMS, CMS, or live any where with Tin Can. Tin Can becomes the roads and bridges that get your content delivered and tracked, and while we recommend that you use at least a light weight LMS, the concept is just to ensure you launch it as Tin Can content and send statements to get to the next step which is tracking.
  12. As long as the content is launched and sending statements learning activities are simple to track. So if you author a web based module you can select the publish for Tin Can, and load the content onto your LMS, or into a 3rd party Tin Can Launcher. When the student completes the module you get a statement Michael completed CPR basics. What about the Instructor led portion of the blended learning… Well with Tin Can its also possible to digitize more traditional rosters. There are many applications that send statements for attendance, books people have read, webinars attended, etc. Based on those activities statements can be generated and input into the LRS. So there are many pre built applications, as well as the statement generator that can be used to get data into the LRS.
  13. You mentioned a webinar tool for Tin Can what is that called?
  14. Using Tin Can with Blended Learning you are going to be able to1 Tracking is simplified because you can either use your LMS, an application, or statement generator you can get all the data into one place and then better evaluate competency2 Instructors and facilitators will have more meaninful data about learning and view it more holistically, they will gain a better ability to pick up patterns and trends3 Adult learners want content that is relevant and delivered when they need it4 instrumentation and correlations can be formed so Tin Can enables real world performance measurement and ways to calculate ROI5 The API is much more flexible than the previous SCORM and you are not tied to an LMS.Please reach out to us if you have any questions about implementing Tin Can.
