In this slide and the following slide, describe the benefits to developer and for those managing hosting services of Web hosting. Rich features to add to Windows offers Web Site Starters for Windows Increased Web server reliability and availability IIS 6.0 features a fault-tolerant architecture with health monitoring and process recycling that significantly increases the reliability of your Web server infrastructure Easier server management IIS 6.0 features new management tools designed to reduce the amount of time it takes to manage your Web server infrastructure, including a plain text XML configuration file that can be modified without having to stop the server Server consolidation IIS 6.0 is a highly-scalable Web server that provides new opportunities for Web server consolidation and enables more applications to be hosted on a single server
Increased server density with centralized logging Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 makes World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) centralized logging available. On servers hosting large numbers of sites (hundreds or thousands), the process of maintaining large numbers of open file handles to log files can negatively impact how the server scales. W3C centralized logging improves server scalability on servers hosting large numbers of sites because IIS requires only one open file handle for logging. Faster application development With Windows Server 2003 and IIS 6.0, application developers benefit from a single, integrated application hosting environment—and have a broad choice of languages for rapid application development and fast, reliable hosting performance. Increased security IIS 6.0 provides significantly improved security for Web servers. IIS 6.0 is locked down by default, limiting the attack surface area through aggressive security defaults. In addition, authentication and authorization have been improved. Tools to monitor and resolve problems A new set of Web server tools, utilizing Windows Server 2003 SP1, help reduce customer support costs through more effective monitoring and problem resolution. IIS Request Monitor captures currently active IIS requests and provides real-time view of state, allowing identification of which requests are hanging. IIS Trace (for classic ASP) reduces time to identify and resolve issues with a customer Web site and follows a request end-to-end throughout system, including failures and execution time.
Use this slide to discuss the enhancements for Shared Web hosting The Web Site Starters for Windows applications are a set of third-party applications optimized to run in a Windows-based Hosting environment. Applications in Web Site Starters for Windows drive customer interest and up-sell by providing a full set of compelling applications built by Microsoft partners and the community. These applications are selected based on criteria which demonstrate a strong fit for shared Windows Web hosting. Concurrent with the version 3.5 release of the solution, two Microsoft partners are launching the first Web Site Starters for Windows applications. DotNetNuke Portal Builder (DNN) : From Perpetual Motion, DNN helps end-users quickly build and manage rich Web sites. With more than two hundred integrated modules available today, DNN provides an easy way for service providers to add new features and applications in Web hosting offers (capabilities can be individually locked down by a service provider). Telligent Community Server (CS) : From Telligent, CS offers three compelling Web applications – Blog, Gallery, and Forums. These rich applications are integrated to enable unified logon and common user administration and user experience. Powerful set of Web server tools to lower Web hosting TCO. This version includes full support for Windows Server 2003 SP1 and provides documentation and guidance to scale to at least 2,000 complex ASP.NET sites per server and tens of thousands of simple HTML sites per server. In addition, a new set of Web server tools helps reduce customer support costs through more effective monitoring and problem resolution. These tools include the IIS Request Monitor which can snapshot currently active IIS requests and provide real-time status as well as IIS Trace which reduces time to identify and resolve issues with classic ASP Web sites.

We have a SQL Server 2005 and Hosting white paper that can be used to today to provide guidance on Data Hosting with SQL Server 2005. Available on the Microsoft Service Providers Web site at http://www.microsoft.com/serviceproviders/solutions/windowsbasedhosting.mspx We will be providing guidance to service providers on how to host SQL Server 2005. This will be focused on management using new tools such as: Upload Tool —M akes it easier for an end customer to upload their SQL Server database to their account on the hosters server SQL Web Tools (formerly SQL Server Web administrator) — Provide a Web-based interface for administration of SQL Server databases We are also doing testing to provide guidance on how to maximize server density with SQL Server 2005. We will provide guidance and We will detail which editions are appropriate for Shared Hosting vs. Dedicated Hosting.
Details on features available in each of the editions can be seen here: http://www.microsoft.com/sql/prodinfo/features/compare-features.mspx SQL Server 2005 Editions As with SQL Server 2000, the Enterprise and Standard Editions are still available and have been updated with some new capabilities. Workgroup Edition was introduced recently in SQL Server 2000. Express Edition The Express edition is new and designed to provide an entry-level option for simple applications and for application developers. This is aimed at competing with mySQL. SQL Server Express will not have any charge and will include the same database engine as the other editions which will provide for a compelling up-sell and migration path. We expect this to be of interest for low-end dedicated hosters. It is possible to start with a lower edition and migrate to a higher one using the same database while adding more features. Emphasize how this now improves our ability to compete against the LAMP stack by offering an easier option for developers to build applications that support SQL Server using SQL Server Express. Hosters can choose an edition that works best with their Data Hosting offers. Note: All higher editions include same functionality as the edition below it.
Speaker Notes: 3 Key Points: SMB requirements for their web presence are growing in complexity. Resellers who engage them to design, build, support, and host their website will continually need to show business value to their clients. SMB customers will value improved access to data to provide better business insight. SQL Server 2005 with integrated Business Intelligence Capabilities means that you can enable your resellers to provide critical information to their customers on their business. SMB customers who monetize their sites will require business continuity services. SQL Server 2005 Database Mirroring provides you the capability for cost effective failover support of the database using commoditized hardware you may already have in your data center. Today we see a lot of service providers going after the small business. In many cases an SMB company will work with a Reseller who will offer business consulting, site design, development, and hosting in a single package. Typically these offers will include a web site, mail, E-Commerce application (packaged or sold separately), and the SMB if they are selling goods will have an inventory control system of some sort, and a customer database. As this site is being monetized by the SMB availability is critical to the success of their business. The business decision makers will want to make informed decisions about how they run their business. They will want to know who is buying what goods, when, and where. The Reseller would need to be in a position to respond to the business continuity and business intelligence needs of their customers thus in turn relying on their hosting service provider to enable them to offer these services. In previous versions of SQL Server, it was difficult to extract relevant information and make it readily available to decision makers. Data exists in multiple & diverse data sources, there is no easy way to propagate reports to end-users, data consolidation, analysis & reporting requires specialized tools & skill-sets. With SQL Server 2005 you can provide business intelligence capability to the Reseller that they in turn can use to create real-time reports and provide data analysis for the SMB business decision maker. Business Intelligence is now integrated into SQL Server 2005 providing a consolidated toolset for developers and resellers to use BI to leverage their existing skilled resources and expertise on SQL Server. You can consolidate your applications and reduce the need for third party applications now that you have the database and BI in a single product. SQL Server AS & RS integrate with Excel and SharePoint to surface information to users in the format they prefer With have a continue to offer Clustering support with SQL Server 2005 to enable you to offer business continuity to your customers. However if you are looking to focus on the database and would like a more cost effective way to offer business continuity for the database you can use the new Database Mirroring capability. It can be used on existing/commoditized hardware that you already may have in your Data Center and would only involve the additional cost of adding more SQL Servers. This will enable you to provide failover support with very low latency achieving minimal disruption from hardware/network failure. It can be used over high bandwidth networks common in hosting where there is a mirrored server housed at another location. Database Mirroring enables business continuity for Hosters with a smaller infrastructure cost giving you the capability and benefits without the overhead of the Microsoft Windows Clustering Service. Now you have an additional option to provide Failover support for SQL Server with your customers that can be more cost effective. Now you can enable your resellers to provide an excellent web presence for their customers in which they are able to make better informed decisions faster and have the assurance that their database will have a very high level of availability. Now the SMB customer can focus on their business, your reseller is able to meet the customer’s business requirements.
Speaker’s Notes: 3 Key Points: SaaS is an opportunity for Hosters to partner with ISVs to enable them to provide their application as software as a service. SQL Server 2005 includes many new technologies that empower the developer and bring significant increases in developer productivity. Hosting Service Providers will be enabled to work with ISVs who have data driven applications that require Enterprise level capabilities such as security and caching. You have already seen the opportunity for Software as a Service (SaaS) in the market place today. In our own market research we have seen 25% of ISVs who are offering SaaS. 80% of ISVs are seeing SaaS as a requirement in their RFPs. As mentioned yesterday (Sanjay or Pascal) we are seeing a growth opportunity for Hosters to work with ISVs to enable them to provide a SaaS offering. Why is SQL Server 2005 important? With earlier versions of SQL, developers and ISVs were challenged with inefficiencies in developing data-centric applications. They had to deal with separate tools, methodologies, and languages to develop application logic and data logic. They have been faced with Limited collaboration processes e.g. version control for DB development and no interoperable standards for accessing data. It was quite difficult to add enterprise capabilities to their applications. Too much coding required to enable capabilities like security, asynchrony & caching. Going from a lightweight prototype DB to production requires application re-work. No easy ways to communicate application deployment requirements to operations (the Hoster). With SQL Server 2005 we have created a superior developer experience to enable developers to achieve faster time to market for their websites and applications. SQL Server 2005 enables developers to create secure, robust database applications more easily and at a lower cost. Common language runtime (CLR) hosting in the database engine supports a variety of development languages and an end-to-end development environment .NET Framework support and tight integration with Visual Studio. Integration with Visual Studio 2005 and .NET speeds up development by up to 40%, including 50-70% code reduction for most scenarios. Native XML capabilities support new classes of connected applications across any platform or device. Full-text search enables high-performance access of structured and unstructured data in a uniform manner Simplified development & debugging Quicker response times for complex analysis requests. We are introducing SQL Server Web Tools which you can use to provider customers with a web-based interface for administration of their database. This tool will be made available as shared source allowing for your own re-branding and customization Express offerings: You can also redistribute SQL Server 2005 Express Edition to developers and offer Visual Web Developer Express along side for hobbyist and entry level developers. Developers can create and test their Database locally in SQL Server Express Edition and then upload it to their account on your server. We are providing guidance to ISVs and Hosters on how to provide applications using the SaaS model with the Solution for Windows-based Hosting for Applications.
Released with ASP.NET 2.0 Easy to use and free Great support for core web development tasks (HTML, Intellisense) Built-in SQL Server Express support and data tools Built-in management tools to ease deployment Can be used with offers aimed at hobbyists Lite Visual Studio tool . Free to download . Nicely integrated with SQL Express. Provides a nice tool for lower end/hobbyist web development. This like SQL Express enables us to compete with LAMP on the lower End and provide a nice up sell path to the other Visual Studio products. We are also making large investments in our web development tools to help developers create rich Web sites on Windows. ASP.NET 2.0 makes it simpler than ever for novice users to incorporate rich functionality like databases and site membership into their Web sites. We’re even introducing a new tool, focused on web development, called Visual Web Developer Express. Visual Web Developer as been built from the ground up to meet the needs of entry level developers, and provide an entry point to the rest of the Visual Studio 2005 family of tools. VWD and ASP.NET 2.0 are being released simultaneously with an introductory version of SQL Server 2005 (aka Yukon), called SQL Server 2005 Express Edition. To help encourage the development of Web sites, Visual Web Developer will be downloadable for free.
Speaker Notes 3 Key Points: SQL Server 2005 can enable you to provide continuous availability for your customers even as the complexity of their requirements increases. Enhanced manageability can help you reduce costs and gain efficiencies even as customer requirements become more complex. This includes SQL Server Web Tools which allows Hosting Service Providers to provide a web based interface for administration of the databse to their customers. We have also created the SQL Server Management Studio which provides a single view into your database. Note that in previous versions you had to use three tools. Now you only require one. SQL Server Web Tools will be provided as a Shared Source project which will allow for re-branding and customization by the Hosting Service Provider and Developers. As the various applications and services they require become more complex you will need a database platform that will enable you to support them. However due to the price pressure in the space it will be necessary to provide a hosted database for the highest number of customers on fewer servers. With previous versions of SQL we had 3 separate tools for management of the database. SQL Server 2005 maximizes the productivity of service providers by reducing the complexity of creating, deploying, and managing database applications that support employees, customers, and partners. Investments in new capabilities, combined with a continued focus on ease of use, help customers control costs without sacrificing performance, reliability, or security. An enhanced security model with granular permissions control, “secure by default” deployment Advanced security features including password policy enforcement and data encryption Continued commitment to technologies such as failover clustering Innovative high availability features like database mirroring. SQL Server 2005 can improve scalability and performance with support for 64 bit computing.
This slide presents a case study summary for a service provider. Review the case study, highlighting the customer pains and the benefits of the Microsoft Solution for Windows-based Hosting solution that was implemented.
Today we are seeing an increasing number of service providers looking to provide higher end managed services to their customers. This can allow them to differentiate themselves from competition and provide higher value services to increase their margins. We have had the Monitoring and Reporting and Update Management solutions in previous versions of Windows-based Hosting. We wanted to reposition these as managed services that can be provided to end customers. In Windows-based Hosting 4.0 we provide guidance on how to use Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) 2005 in the Monitoring and Reporting module. We have provided a MOM management pack designed specifically for Web hosting scenarios that allows for generating reports with only the necessary data for Web hosting. With MOM, a service provider can provide a higher level of service by being able to monitor server health and to more easily detect and prevent problems ahead of time. This can also allow a service provider to design an offer for pro-active support vs reactive support. Rackspace is a good example of someone providing managed services using MOM. Update Management Windows-based Hosting 4.0 can use WSUS (Windows System Update Services) to update the operating system. A service provider can build in or add on the option to have the operating system maintained at the current security level through update management. This can include maintaining security levels for each version of Windows. Patch/update management can be a headache of end customers that service providers can build into their value proposition. Business Continuity We are providing guidance in our Web hosting module for Remote Storage and for Load Balanced Server farms. This will enable service providers to provide a higher SLA while providing assurance to end customers of the reliability of their Web site.
The monitoring and reporting component provides comprehensive event management; proactive fault detection; and automated reactions to events, alerting, reporting, trend analysis, and applications monitoring.
The update management component of Windows-based Hosting provides the strategies and recommendations for managing service packs and security updates that are applied to the servers and the infrastructure in a data center. WSUS is the update management solution for all Microsoft products and provides: Support for additional update types: security, critical and non-critical updates, update rollups, service packs, feature packs, and critical driver updates Core update management infrastructure in Windows Data model: Supersedence, update dependency, and bundle relationships Built-in update scanning engine to detect missing updates Server APIs (.NET) and remoteable Client APIs (COM) Enhanced bandwidth optimization Uses Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) for client/server and server/server communication “ Binary delta compression” technologies dramatically reduce data transfer needs Configurable update subscriptions—specify subset of content to be downloaded
This slide presents a case study summary for a service provider. Review the case study, highlighting the customer pains and the benefits of the Microsoft Solution for Windows-based Hosting solution that was implemented. Again, point out the dramatic change in time for server builds using ADS.
Centralized Management Centrally manage all network users, groups, computers, and policies Increase the number of servers, users, groups, and group policies per single administrator Manage both shared and dedicated customers Delegate administrative tasks to enable secure, role-based authentication Enhance security with central authentication and best practices using Windows Server 2003 security guidance Server Purposing Uses Automated Deployment Services (ADS), which is a downloadable add-on component of Microsoft Windows Server™ 2003. ADS is designed for data centers containing over 15,000 servers and does the following: Automates multiserver builds Accelerates the process of preparing, purposing, and configuring Microsoft Windows-based servers from bare metal to fully operational Deploys or configures a server or group of servers based on external events such as a receipt of a customer order Service Provisioning Microsoft Provisioning System (MPS) is an extensible, transactional, auditable platform with which you can manage hosted applications and services via XML. MPS includes: Microsoft Provisioning Framework (MPF) Providers Resource management Managed namespaces
The solution has proven results in helping hosting providers rapidly reduce operational costs and drive revenue by launching new services.
