Slide Content: Hosting represents the first wave of e-sourcing, which promises customers new capabilities and improved efficiencies through the network delivery of IT infrastructure, applications and processes. Integral to IBM’s strategy, we are investing heavily in a global hosting infrastructure that enables these capabilities. The YELLOW sites are our Service Delivery Centers (SDC’s) and the WHITE sites are our e-business Hosting Centers (eBHC’s) located in our partner facilities (Qwest, AT&T, and Equinix). The primary difference is that the partner facilities are designed to allow physical customer access while the SDC’s are accessible to privileged IBM employees only. Customers can gain access in an SDC but it’s an exception basis and by IBM escort only. Differentiators: The Global continuity of infrastructure, tools and process is the biggest differentiator for IBM. Most competitors have some geographic diversity but they typically achieve it through acquisitions, partnerships or marketing alliances. The problem is that these where all separate entities at one time and they all invested in infrastructures, tools, skills and processes that may not be compatible with the hosters other sites or services. Plus the expense and pain to make them homogenous maybe prohibitive in today’s market. Customers procuring services from an alliance need to be particularly careful since they are assuming more risk than if they were dealing with a single vendor that assumes the responsibility for all the services delivered. Customers have to be concerned about options in case the partnerships dissolve. What happens If one part of the contract performs below par, does the customer have the right to employ another firm? IBM is often the number 1 revenue generator for our partners, but we just don’t resell their products or services. We work with them on new technologies, drivers, software, and components so the relationship typically runs much deeper than many of the “press release” partnerships we see in the industry today.
