 Be approachable
 Have empathy, be a good listener
 Use age-appropriate speak
 Be respectful of boundaries
 Be patient
 Build rapport so you can build trust
 Understand how being in hospital affects the young
person’s life – loss of independence, social circle,

 Involve young people in decisions around their care
