Morgellon’s Disease: A Short History

Morgellon’s Disease or Morgellon’s Syndrome (pronounced More-jellons) had been first
noted in the Fortean Times in England and The Gate Magazine in America at the turn of our
present century. Cases from the Western United States were under investigation by doctors in
2001, though the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) did not even recognize it as a
disease until 2007 when they described it as “Unexplained Dermopathy”. The disease seems to
have been born right here in the United States and is now spreading world wide. There is no
instance of it being noted in any of the nations bordering ours and being brought in. The most
cases have appeared in Florida, Arizona, Texas and California. One of the first cases occurred in
Pennsylvania and involved a two year old child who was thought to have contracted typical
scabies. Though some contend it is a delusional psychiatric disease, it might be noted here that
two year olds are rarely “delusional.”

At first it seemed like just one of those weird news items that are used as filler in many
newspapers. People were complaining of having “bugs under their skin” which would cause them
to itch and scratch almost to the point of mental exhaustion and nervous breakdown. Then some
people began to report tiny “hairs” sprouting from lesions where the “infestation of bugs” seemed
to be particularly bad. Doctors reportedly gave prescriptions to their patients for Prozac, Valium,
Thorazine or other anti-depressants and anti-psychotics. This was because the doctors were sure
their patients were suffering from various forms of mental illness. They believed the patients
feeling of bugs under the skin were similar to what happens to people who have the Delirium
Tremens (D.T.s) or who are schizophrenic. The medical term for the condition is: Delusional
Parasitis.

In response to the doctors’ claims of delusions, patients began to bring in samples of
hairs, spore like matter and what seemed to be fuzzy nylon rug thread balls into doctor’s offices
to be analyzed. They would swear the things had either popped out of their skin or that they had,
with some difficulty, surgically removed the “fibers” themselves! Doctors of course remained
skeptical, assuming the patients were now bringing in samples of their own cut hair or rug threads
to “prove” to themselves they had a real disease.

Some doctors however began to question their own pet theories about mental illness
when they examined these fibers under magnification and began to test them. They were not
hairs; they had no cell membranes, nor any cellular structure! They were not composed of natural
keratin as hair and nails are. They were impervious to heat up to 1700 degrees! They seemed to
be formed of some unknown, non-biological material. But they were not plastic or nylon. They
moved as if they were alive! They grew, but from what source scientists could not say. There
were no signs of bugs, mite or insects of any kind, not even microscopic ones like dust-mites.
Some of the material did in fact appear to be spores of some sort (often referred to as “pepper
spores”). Other fibers seemed like twisted electrical wiring! The colors were odd, unnatural
whites, blues, yellows and reds. Finally patients came in with larger “strands” coming from their
open lesions. Some were as thick as a piece of spaghetti! They were nearly impossible to pull out
of the lesion without great pain. The lesions left rough patches of skin bereft of elasticity, a
thickening or scarring that caused more pain and aggravation. The itching and buggy feelings
were so intense that one young man actually killed himself rather than live with the agony. This
was getting serious.
Fibers were sent on to various labs and even to the Center for Disease Control at Atlanta.
The tests always concluded these fibers were not natural, not man-made, and not biologically
viable; they contained no human, animal or vegetable cell structure or DNA. Yet they did grow,
coil and knot themselves underneath the skin, causing an allergic reaction in the patient’s skin.
They would then erupt through the skin and appear at the surface. Or the skin would erupt with
black spores. Yet these “spores” did not grow anything or reproduce themselves. They seemed to
be alive in some sense, but it was not understood how. If anything the fibers resemble something
along the lines of carbon-based nano-technology; self-replicating carbon structures, both tough
and durable. In movies and science fiction books “nano-bots” behave like tiny computer
programmed machines that robotically build upon themselves. Nano-technology, as far as the
public is concerned, is still the stuff of science fiction. No one has developed a true nano-
technology… as far as we know.

Evidently these people had a new type of disease which was named Morgellon’s after the
children from the town of that name in the Languedoc region of France who had “harsh hairs”
sprouting from their backs, according to journalist Sir Thomas Browne in 1690. Morgellon’s was
the name given to the disease as a temporary title by doctors, since this singular journal entry
from the 17th century was the only link scientists had to any past precedent for this disease type.

At today’s date there are an ever growing number of sufferers being diagnosed, well over
ten thousand at last count. What they all have in common are two things: They all have
contracted Lyme Disease at some point in their lives. (A disease which is transported by Deer
Ticks); and they all had been exposed to large amounts of potting and gardening soils infected
with a rare agro-bacteria that has been genetically modified from the bacteria that creates Oak
galls. (A gall is a tumor like growth on Oak trees). Scientists had believed that people could not
be affected by agro-bacteria, which is why they use it for recombinant genetic experimentation,
but this may not be the case. (Is it possible the agro-bacteria had in some cases become virulent in
humans)?

Certain organizations and persons which come off in the media as reasonable and erudite
feel there is a connection to the various viruses afflicting modern society like HIV and Hepatitis
C which they seem to conclude are man made. A Google search of Morgellon’s will bear this out.
When people make accusations like this, the medical community does not give them much
credence. However they could be right about this being a type of “Stealth Virus,” a virus which
our body’s natural defenses tend to ignore because it appears as innocuous or non-threatening.

Many people also plead a case for this being a man-made virus or some sort of
genetically engineered nematode worm found in cotton, or that it is part of a whole group of toxic
substances dropped by U.S. Airforce planes onto unsuspecting farms from “chemtrails.” We
cannot hope to cure or eradicate a disease which may have been unleashed on an unsuspecting
public on purpose. Such a thing would make the culprit no better than Sadaam Hussein who used
poison gas on his own people. It is interesting that this disease reared its ugly head at the same
time as the Anthrax Threat came to the public’s attention during and directly after the 911
incident. Perhaps it was going to be used as an anti-terrorism campaign catch phrase. But even
modern science has yet to develop a virus or parasite that acts in the manner of Morgellon’s.
There really is no evidence that this disease is anything but a newly occurring but fully natural
disease.

There is so much talk now of Morgellon’s being something from UFOs, Nano
technology, alien fungi, and the like that it is now very hard to determine whether science is
combating a new disease or a new cultural delusion. However the fact remains that the CDC in
Atlanta has concluded Morgellon’s is a disease. The fibers are not “worms” as they are
fantastically heat resistant and cannot be eradicated through chemical treatments. It is not a
known bacterium, virus, fungus or parasite, as no previous precedent has been set concerning the
symptoms of the disease. It is a rare and possibly contagious skin disease. The vectors for it, or
the primary transport for the disease are absolutely unknown at this time. It still needs intensive
investigation.

This new disease threat needs to be fully investigated with commensurate public,
government and private funding. Let us hope that for once a cause and a cure can be found before
we have a new global Polio or Smallpox type of plague on our hands. We have just started a new
battle against the so-called “Swine Flu” which has killed hundreds of people so far. Morgellon’s
should be treated with equal intensity and seriousness on the part of the medical and scientific
communities. The time for secrecy, disinformation, rumor mongering and ranting on the subject
of Morgellon’s should end. Let us look at the disease from every angle in a professional manner
and then find a way to eradicate it.
