White Card Update: Workers Beware of Harsh Conditions
1. White Card Update: Workers Beware of Harsh Conditions
As parts of Australia are being ravaged by bushfires it is important that workers beware of the
procedures to follow when a bushfire (or any emergency) occurs on or near their worksite.
Emergencies, for example bushfires should be anticipated beforehand in order to develop an
appropriate plan and safety procedures for emergency situations. Sites in areas prone to
bushfires should be prepared for these types of occurrences.
Construction sites near bush fires can be affected by flying embers blown by the wind, direct
flame encroachment or heat radiation leading to auto-ignition.
It is important for construction sites in these areas prone to bush fires to develop a safety plan
for these potentially life threatening events.
The nature of construction work and the materials and equipment used make it vital to identify
risks and then take the necessary steps to prevent or minimise the hazards. Much of the site
and building materials are flammable which presents a hazard.
One of the dangers of bushfires to construction sites are flying embers which carried by the
wind have the potential to cause huge fires if they land on combustible material.
Sites in areas prone to bushfire must be well prepared if they hope to avoid a bush fire or ember
attack. It is also important to ensure smooth emergency evacuation and response procedures.
Workers on site should be trained on these emergency procedures and as the site changes and
progresses, the emergency procedures should be reviewed and altered accordingly. Staff
should be made aware of these changes.
