There are currently 3012 known exoplanets. A few are thought to be potentially habitable. One exoplanet was discovered orbiting a binary star system, so it is sometimes referred to as "Tatooine" like in Star Wars. Exoplanets have highly elliptical orbits unlike planets in our solar system. They are discovered by detecting the gravitational effects on their host stars and light blocked during transits. Initially, only large, close-in exoplanets could be detected, but water has now been confirmed on at least one exoplanet, which is exciting since water is important for life. Exoplanets form in a similar manner to planets in our solar system through accretion of dust and gas near their host stars.
