                                           Senior Project

Broadcasting provided about 316,000 wage and salary jobs in 2008 (“BLS”). Although 38

percent of all establishments employed fewer than 5 people, most jobs were in large

establishments; 74 percent of all jobs were in establishments with at least 50 employees.

Broadcasting establishments are found throughout the country, but jobs in larger stations are

concentrated in large cities. In the subdivision of broadcasting, there is the division of audio

broadcasting. Audio broadcasting helps spread news through a variety of ways, such as through

the radio or through the television. The many controls that an audio broadcaster has to use make

this job field a very difficult and strenuous work place. In the field of audio broadcasting the

declining activity of people being interested in this field is worrisome for many people interested

in audio broadcasting.

Throughout the field of audio broadcasting, the possibility of the audio broadcast business being

successful for years seems to come up as questionable. As theFederal Communications

Commissions says, “In-band On-channel (IBOC) digital audio broadcasting (DAB) provides for

enhanced sound fidelity, improved reception, and new data services.” (“FCC”) With the help of

sound enhancement of radio and televisions around the country, audio broadcasting should be

one of the most wanted jobs around. However, all of the stress that results with the job seems to

push people away from the thought of joining the audio broadcast field. In addition, IBOC is

known as the method of transmitting near-CD quality audio signals to radio receivers along with
Hulsey 2

new data services such as station, song and artist identification, stock and news information, as

well as local traffic and weather bulletins. (“FCC”) This technology allows broadcasters to use

their current radio spectrum to transmit AM and FM analog signals simultaneously with new

higher quality digital signals. The time that the audio broadcasters have to create the signal to all

radio stations has to be right on with the radio station. So if the broadcasters are off by just a few

seconds then the signals create a buzzing noise that will air through all radios across the country.

Also, the IBOC is a method of transmitting near-CD quality audio signals to radio receivers

along with new data services such as station, song and artist identification, stock and news

information, as well as local traffic and weather bulletins (“FCC”). This technology allows

broadcasters to use their current radio spectrum to transmit AM and FM analog signals

simultaneously with new higher quality digital signals. These digital signals eliminate the static,

hiss, pops, and fades associated with the current analog radio system. Audio broadcasting is a

huge part of the radio and television world; without all of the high technologically advanced

equipment that helps eliminate the annoying noises, such as static and pops. If the audio

broadcasters do not eliminate all of the annoyances, then the audience whether they are listening

to the radio or they are watching on the television, they will get fed up and change the channel

and the station will have their ratings drop. Another name for audio broadcasting is DAB, or

Digital Audio Broadcasting (“FCC”). Digital Audio Broadcasting is broadcasted throughout

many countries and different continents. DAB helps out with getting the signals to the right

towers and create the best audio for televisions and radios. With audio broadcasting having such

an important impact on society today, the field of audio broadcasting has to make sure that there

is always a perfect signal for the radio and television markets.

Throughout the audio broadcasting community, the impact that the audio broadcasting has on the
Hulsey 3

employees creates a vibe that some people might not want to be a part of. According the Bureau

of Labor Statistics, “Many broadcast employees have erratic work schedules, sometimes having

to work early in the morning or late at night” (“BLS”). Having the busy work schedule is a

turnoff for audio broadcast employees and could be for other future employees. Audio

broadcasting employees sometimes have to come in four to five hours before the starting of the

telecast or the time the radio show is suppose to start. Furthermore, the erratic schedule could

result in the random wake up calls to due a very important news cast (“BLS”). Audio

broadcasters have to get up and get all of the equipment set up in the perfect spot for the telecast.

Having the ability to wake up and get everything set up by the time deadline is very important,

and some people might just not have the drive and determination to do the job asked to be

completed. Also, television news teams made up of reporters, camera operators, and technicians

travel in electronic news-gathering vehicles to various locations to cover news stories (“BLS”).

Audio broadcasters have to be able to get all of the equipment, such as sound boards, computers

and recorders ready for each and every story. Being ready for each move that the broadcasters

move will be key so that each audio broadcaster will have all of the microphones ready for the

reporter ready to drop the big news. As the Bureau of Labor Statistics says, „Broadcast and

sound engineering technicians and radio operators generally work indoors in pleasant

surroundings. However, those who broadcast news and other programs from locations outside

the studio may work outdoors in all types of weather or in other dangerous conditions” (“BLS”).

Going out into dangerous conditions have caused people interested in audio broadcasting away

from the job because they do not want to be put in serious or life-threatening situations.Being

able to set up the equipment in the dangerous situations could cause problems for some people,

so audio broadcasters have to be on their toes at all times and be prepared for the
Hulsey 4

worst.Beingready for the crew to call action is very stressful, causing some interested people in

this field shy away from audio broadcasting. Undoubtedly, with all of the craziness of the

workplace of broadcasting, the impact could cause people to back away from audio broadcasting.

Also, in the field of broadcasting, there are many solutions that help people succeed and make

people interested in audio broadcasting. According to the Bureau of Labor of Statistics, “Audio

and video equipment technicians should complete a technical-training program related to the

field, which may take several months to a year to complete” (“BLS”). People might not want to

spend several months to a year trying to complete this training program. However if completed,

the program will allow you to make it in a major and larger audio broadcasting

markets.Employees in the radio and television broadcasting industry often find their first job in

broadcast stations that serve smaller markets. Competition for positions in large metropolitan

areas is stronger, and stations in these areas usually seek highly experienced personnel (“BLS”).

Being able to get a large area job will be a good way to start out in audio broadcasting. People

interested in audio broadcasting should work diligently and work their way up in the audio

broadcasting pyramid. Also, Individuals pursuing a career in broadcasting often gain their initial

experience through work at college radio and television stations or through internships at

professional stations (“BLS”). These positions are usually unpaid, but they could provide college

tuition or college credit. All in all, I believe the solution for having a successful career in

broadcasting, I will need to take any and many opportunities that come my way, and now that the

employment is dropping, I have a real shot at getting a large opportunity in a large market area.

Finally, the audio broadcast field has an interesting outlook with the declining

employment rate. The Bureau of Labor Statistics describes the outlook by saying, “ Keen

competition is expected for many jobs, particularly in large metropolitan areas, because of the
Hulsey 5

large number of job seekers attracted by the glamour of this industry” (“BLS”). The employment

for people interested in audio broadcasting depends on the type of degree you have. Having your

degree in broadcasting goes a long way in helping the person get a job in audio broadcasting.

Experience also helps, so to better oneself above the competition, the person should try to get a

job at their college radio station. Furthermore, ob prospects will be best for applicants expected

to increase by 7 percent over the 2008–18 period, less than the 11 percent increase projected for

all industries combined (“BLS”).The employment percent isn‟t looking as good as it was

suppose to. The slow growth will be tempered, however, by growth in the cable and subscription

division of broadcasting. So hopefully the employment ratings will go up and help the audio

broadcasting field become more successful. Also, job growth in television also is being

constrained by the increased competition created by services outside the broadcasting industry

(“BLS”).Portable music players, cable TV, and especially the Internet have created new

challenges that the industry must adapt to in order to continue to be successful. I will learn each

of the new equipment and have knowledge of each specific equipment‟s purpose. The outlook

for the broadcasting business is looking

up, but there could be a struggle along the way.

Despite the fact that there is a dramatic drop in employment numbers for people

interested in the field audio broadcasting, I believe that this field is still a possible location for

what I would want to do for my future job. The job has some obstacles to go through, but if I

dedicate myself, I believe I will succeed in this job field, and therefore, I will enjoy what I would

do at work, which is very important to me.
