- Literalists are usually creationists. Believe biblical account of creation is literally correct. Contextulaists would say that some is metaphorical, symbolic. Need to understand how authors understood it. Meaning depends on context. Some of Bible is history, some is poetry, some stories, some myths, etc. need to analyse literary quailities. Bible itself says nature is a source of authority

- . Each of the levels in the stepped structure is a new level in the hierarchy which can be explained in terms of its own laws and theories but is not reducable to a lower level. . This also corresponds the downward causation of one level on a lower one such as Whitehead's electron. The sungsang — hyungsang polarity finds many examples in modern science such as the notion of complementarity in quantum mechanics. It is no more possible to explain mental events in terms of neuron firing as it is possible to reduce the wave character of light to particles. The sungsang aspect is like the software in a computer, the hyungsang like the hardware. The structure of DNA was unravelled by the marriage of two strands of molecular biology: the information school, trying to understand genetic information and inheritance, and the structural school, trying to reduce biology to physics. They met in Cambridge in the work of J.D. Watson and F.H.C. Crick. They discovered the double helix structure made up of combinations of four base pairs. A particular base sequence has 'meaning' which cannot be explained in terms of physics or chemistry. It conveys information which has a particular meaning in a particular organism and, . . . in no way can the concept of information, the concept of conveying a message, be articulated in terms of the concepts of physics and chemistry, even though the latter can now be shown to explain how the molecular machinery (DNA, RNA, the appropriate enzymes etc.) operates to convey information. The structure of a protein molecule, and still more, a DNA molecule, is so complex that it has been suggested that there is some sense in which there is global coordination taking place. A DNA molecule is several metres long, yet has to be folded in a precise way to function. Each level in the hierarchy has its own laws, and exhibits downward causation on the lower level elements without violating the lower level laws. These are additional, not different, laws. As we saw above, the idea of downward causation suggests that, "all processes at the lower levels of a hierarchy are restrained by and act in conformity to the laws of the higher levels." When a protein molecule assumes its precise and complex three dimensional shape it is suggested that the protein in some sense 'knows' what shape to take, since the number of possible configurations is vast. To achieve its shape different parts of the molecule must move in unison with each other although separated by a great distance. The non-locality shown by the E.P.R experiment has been suggested as one possible explanation. The holistic implications of E.P.R suggest that global action-at-a-distance is indeed possible. - In the created world only the human being combines material and spiritual elements. Human existence is thus differentiated from non-human creation in a qualitative way. In light of this fact, the Church Fathers often speak of the human being as a "little world", a "microcosm" of the whole of the creation. Using this notion, the Church Fathers teach that the human body contains in it all levels of existence of the natural world which preceded it in order of the creation, and considered the physical elements which make up the human body as in no way different from those which constitute the physical world. This means that the natural world is fully integrated with the human being and the whole of the creation. 10. At the same time, the Fathers' use of the notion of microcosm means that humanity, created in God's image and likeness, transcends the material world because it participates in God spiritually and consciously, unlike the rest of the creation. Humankind then stands on the boundary ( methorion ) between the material and the spiritual worlds as a connecting link.
