not managed to meet King James and then she was imprisoned.
Contrast in clothings
-
For “Pocahontas I” the tribe traditional Indian clothing and the English attire
were equally shown.
For “Pocahontas II” the clothing were mainly the 1600s English attire, even
Pocahontas was wearing the English clothing during the ball.
3. “Pocahontas I” is a 1995 American animated epic musical romance-drama
film. It was produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation. This is the first animated
feature Disney film that based on a real history character of the Native American
woman Pocahontas and features a fictionalized of her encounter with Englishman
John Smith and the story continues in “Pocahontas ll”, Journey to a New World and
encounter with another Englishman called John Rolfe. Although they both are
Pocahontas series, they both difference by, setting, genre and lastly the clothing.
First, is the setting of the movie. For “Pocahontas l”, the movie was set in
1607 and mainly focusing at the New World. The movie begin with the Susan
Constant sailed to the New World from England carrying British settlers of Virginia
Company which captain John Smith and Governor Ratcliffe were among them. At
the New World, Ratcliffe had the fortress Jamestown built and immediately had the
crewmen to dig for gold whereas John Smith departs to explore the wildness of the
New World and at there he met Pocahontas. At the New World, one tribe warrior was
killed by the colonist and John Smith was captured. Chief Powhatan decided to
execute Smith at sunrise but Pocahontas threw herself in the way just as Chief
Powhatan was going to execute Smith and the war was stopped.
As for “Pocahontas II”, the setting was basically in London which was different
from the New World. A young diplomat, John Rolfe was send to the New World to
bring Chief Powhatan to England for negotiation but he refused to accompany and
Pocahontas took his place instead believing that she can bring peace between the 2
nations and this is where Pocahontas started her journey to England. In England,
John Rolfe left Pocahontas at his mansion and meets with King James and the
Queen, but King James refuse to meet with Pocahontas instead he invited Rolfe and
Pocahontas to an upcoming ball and promised he will prevent the armada from
4. sailing to Jamestown if Pocahontas impressed him by acting “civilized” but if not, he
will declare war. At first Pocahontas almost managed to prevent the war but it was a
failure. She was sent to prison in the Tower of London and King James declared war
on the Powhatan tribe. Pocahontas was then rescued by Rolfe and a hooded
stranger, John Smith which Pocahontas thought that he is dead. Pocahontas and
Rolfe decide to try and stop the war and finally the war was stopped.
Next is the genre for the movie. For the genre, “Pocahontas I” touches more
on romance whereas “Pocahontas II” touches more on adventure. When comes to
romance there comes a handsome guy. Pocahontas met John Smith in the New
World and they fell in love and the movie continues with their love moment but
Pocahontas’s father, Chief Powhatan forbidden their love. When Chief Powhatan
was about to execute Smith, Pocahontas protects him with her life. John Smith was
injured when trying to save Chief Powhatan and was forced to return home to
receive medical treatment. Although they love each other, Pocahontas chose to stay
with her tribe when Smith asked Pocahontas to come along. As for “Pocahontas II”,
Pocahontas came out from Jamestown and went to a new place called London with
John Rolfe for negotiation. The journey in England was not as smooth as
Pocahontas thought. She cannot meet King James as she wished as King James
refused to meet her. King James invited them to ball too test whether Pocahontas is
being civilized and unfortunately, Pocahontas was sent to prison. Pocahontas was
then saved by John Smith and John Rolfe. So “Pocahontas II is more bound to
adventure rather than romance.
Last but not least, these two movie different from clothing. In “Pocahontas I”
5. The costumes are balance for both Chief Powhatan’s tribe clothing and the English
clothing during 1600s. John Smith, Governor Ratcliffe and those crewmen who came
to the New World were wearing the English clothing whereas Pocahontas and Chief
Powhatan’s tribe were wearing their traditional Indian attire. But for “Pocahontas II”,
the clothing is more focusing on the English wearing. Pocahontas was also in
English attire when she attended the ball invited by King James.
In a nutshell, “Pocahontas I” and “Pocahontas II” different in settings, genre
and clothing. These differences make us to understand and know more about the
history. We can still enjoy the same character but experiencing different culture,
story and history.
