Focus of the Capstone Project
The focus of the capstone project seeks to solve a contemporary criminal and
social justice issue, through the application of information from sociology, law,
psychology, ethics, and related fields to the study of criminal justice. In
developing a proposed solution to a modern criminal and social justice issue,
students are encouraged to use scholarly sources, multimedia, interviews with
professionals in the field, and primary sources to identify and devise a workable
plan. Within the proposed solution:
1. Examine the relationship of social justice and the operations of the criminal
justice system, including, but not limited to: crime scene investigation techniques
and security; the collection, preservation and presentation of evidence; issues
related to correctional institutions, incarceration, and release.
2. Analyze criminal and social justice theories in relation to the United States
Constitution.
3. Apply knowledge of socio-economic (cultural) diversity to contemporary
criminal and social justice.
4. Assess the centralization of criminal justice agencies domestically, the U.S.
Homeland Security Act, and the international aspects of criminal and social
justice.
Students may supplement their projects with any of the following: all scholarly
sources, including documentaries and contemporary news-reporting;
comparisons of similar tactics/agencies in varying situations and their effects;
political and military trends and technology that directly impact the
tactics/organizations being influenced.
The paper must be twenty pages in length and formatted according to APA style.
You must use at least five scholarly resources (at least two of which can be found
in the Ashford Online Library) other than the textbook to support your claims and
subclaims. Cite your resources in text and on the reference page. For information
regarding APA samples and tutorials, visit the Ashford Writing Center, within the
