LGBTQ adolescents face challenges beyond those of their heterosexual peers including: decisions about coming out; bullying; violence; pressure to engage in heterosexual behaviors, resulting in increased risk of pregnancy and exposure to STIs; and high rates of HIV and STIs among teen MSM. To help meet the sexual education and health needs of LGBTQ teens, Planned Parenthood is developing an intervention to meet LGBTQ youth where they are: on their phones. To create LGBTQ-specific tools, we are conducting new research and applying learnings from our previous development of nine digital tools geared toward heterosexual African-American and Latino youth. This presentation will discuss the original digital tools, learnings from focus groups with LGBTQ teens, and plans for developing new tools for this population.

Gay, bisexual, and queer men who have sex with men account for nearly two-thirds of all HIV infections in the US. HIV status disclosure is an important, but underdeveloped, strategy to address ongoing sexual risk behaviors. Tough Talks, a disclosure intervention for YMSM age 18-29, is focused on building the critical communication and negotiation skills associated with HIV status disclosure using virtual reality (VR) in a culturally competent and real-world context. Designing VR programs that can be used at the convenience of the user with the language and ecological nuances necessary to model and practice realistic negotiation represents a critical next step in HIV prevention. VR technology can be utilized to overcome many of the basic barriers to access and effective care. Health interventions that break away from a resource-intensive modality and adapt available and affordable technologies can better engage participants, ultimately supporting positive behavior change.

Addiction is a strong word, and someone can have a problem with Facebook without having a full-blown addiction. Some call this emerging type of addictive behavior "Facebook addiction disorder" or FAD, but the syndrome is not widely acknowledged as a psychological disorder, though it is being studied by psychologists.

We spoke with Gabriel and Alexis, who are teens at our addiction treatment center about their experiences on this subject. And we also had the rare opportunity to talk to Efrat Cohen a leading Private Investigator (PI) and executive director of Global Intelligence Consultants about the hidden dangers between social media and teen drug abuse. Efrat has been a guest speaker at IYF on several occasions talking about the Internet and the threats it poses to teens.

An estimated 60% of teenagers on Facebook keep their profiles rather private and they report high levels of confidence in their quest to manage their settings. Many parents often ask themselves what their children are always doing on the internet and in particular social media all day long. It is important for these parents to understand that social media is now a way of life. One of the greatest effects of social media is that it is addictive. It is said that people have to log in to Facebook at least five times a day. It has become such a way life and a way to communicate with the rest of the world that a person cannot stay away from social media. According to studies, at least 63% of American have to log on to Twitter on a daily basis. Further, 40% of Americans log on more than once a day, a fact that almost all teenagers now have a mobile phone with them.
