The word function comes
from the from Middle French
word fonction and the direct
Latin functionem, meaning
"performance or execution".

3. Just how necessary is
evaluation?

4. Evaluation seeks to provide
objective evidence of whether the
program has met the desired
objectives.

5. It provides an opportunity for program planning
and decision-making.
Shertzer and Stone view evaluation as
necessary to provide for the effectiveness of
achieving program goals, in relation to specific
standards.

6. Evaluation provides as a means of
communication among school
counselors, guidance teachers, school
administrators, parents and the
community in general.

7. It defines expectations for counselors, and
provides a systematic means of measuring the
counselor’s or guidance teacher’s performance in
relation to program expectations.

8. Evaluation determines what
the program achieves.
In evaluating the program’s effectiveness, the
following can be measured:
Student awareness of the services;
Satisfaction of students involved in individual
counseling; and
Satisfaction of students involved in classroom,
and out-of-class, guidance activities.

9. Remember!
Evaluation should be an on-going process.
It provides an opportunity to modify the
program when necessary.
It helps to check: program effectiveness,
program response to changing needs,
strengths and limitations of the program,
staff development, and reporting and
follow-up.
